The laws must change to better protect women, worldwide. Here, in America, it's possible. But the communities need to fight for it. Even in a city as big as New York, we are fighting, and have actually made progress. It's in no way perfect, but it gets us a bit closer. And in NY, the change in law has allowed police officers to arrest hundreds of criminals who strangled their "significant other" then continued to sleep in sanctity of their own homes, simply because the police couldn't do a danged thing about it.
Here's what the change in New York law has done already in just a matter of weeks:
More than 2,000 people have been charged with strangulation offenses across New York state according to a report issued Thursday by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services.
“These arrest numbers are staggering and clearly illustrate the gap that existed in the Penal Law,” said DCJS Acting Commissioner Sean M. Byrne. “... I commend law enforcement officials in communities across the state for their swift and effective use of this new tool.”
Prior to the law, it was difficult to arrest or prosecute individuals accused of strangling their victims because in the vast majority of those cases, there was no visible physical injury, even if the victim temporarily lost consciousness. As a result, the only charge individuals often faced was second-degree harassment, a violation.
It's amazing how in this day and age, strangling a human being nearly to death can end in a simple violation, every bit as serious as a double parking ticket. However, in your town or city, that's ALL THE PROTECTION a woman (or a man for that matter) may have from the law.
Stand up, do something about it. Talk to your congressman and demand better laws.

NEW YORK — The grandmother of Tina Adovasio's three older children screamed "You murderer!" as the suspect in her killing, Eddy Coello, was arraigned in the Bronx on Friday.
Coello was indicted on a charge of second-degree murder in the death of Adovasio, his wife, who worked as a nurse in New Rochelle. The former New York City police officer is accused of killing her in the Bronx and dumping her body off the Taconic State Parkway in Yorktown.
A dozen family members attended the arraignment in the Bronx County Courthouse, and appeared anguished when Coello was brought out at 10:50 a.m.
He was quickly taken out of the courtroom after the outburst by Adovasio's former mother-in-law. Coello, wearing an orange jumpsuit from the Department of Corrections, showed no emotion.
Court officers then asked the trembling, crying grandmother to leave the courtroom. As she made her way to the door, she said, "What he did to my kids!"
As family members sobbed and hugged one another, Coello pleaded not guilty in domestic violence court. Judge Miriam Best set his next court appearance for June 17. Adovasio, who lived in the Bronx, was divorcing Coello, who her family said had repeatedly abused her. Her cousin, Joe Rapisarda, said the family wasn't ready to talk about the case after the arraignment.
"We have no words right now," he said, shaking his head.
Prosecutors have said physical evidence, surveillance video and Coello's own words would show that he strangled his wife late March 11 or early March 12, carried away her body and then dumped it in Yorktown.

Im very sorry to hear about this, and read about it.
As a married man, I can't imagine being abusive to my spouse. Or any other woman for that matter. Or even another man.
Humankind is full of both the good and the bad.
Here's to praying that the good moments and the good people more than make up for our evils.
While I can't change the world, I can certainly take responsibility for my own actions and teach my children how to love and not hate.

A mother was taken away from her 4 children ..... Their lives will never be the same .... This animal has to rot in jail ........"
We've been praying for almost a year and a half. Justice will be done.

Wow, first time I"ve seen this thread. Hoping justice will prevail. Sadness at your loss this year.
Once upon a time, I was part of a team, and we saved some children. That was long ago and far away, and, yes, I am that old.

The verdict is in. GUILTY.
Eddie Cuello faces 25 years to life.
Hours before the guilty verdict, Coello was visibly laughing with his lawyer, within eyesight of Tina's family (including Tina's mother.)
He wasn't laughing after the guilty verdict. I'm sure the papers will be ablaze tomorrow with this story.
RIP Tina, and God Bless the family, and especially her young children. Today, the law won..

I missed this thread originally, I'm saddened to learn of it.
but my most sincere condolences to family friends and children..
to all who have suffered such atrocities..
I myself can empathize,
13 years ago I left an abusive relationship when I had to leave with only the clothes on my back, with nothing.. and had to move across country to be safe...
thankfully I could get away before I knew what would be the end of me.
Sometimes it is so hard to prove this is happening in your home, even when relatives do not believe you until it is too late.
Prayers to all who suffer in silence, to gain freedom.
My heart goes out to them <3
Yes, and that's the reason I decided to post this thread. My only hope, that one person in a similar situation could possibly read it, and get themselves out of harm's way, before it's too late. Or maybe a friend or family member could advise their loved one.
Tina was a hero because she sensed her children were in danger, and got them out of harms way literally in the nic of time. Gone is a local registered nurse who helped so many thousands in her community, she was so well liked. Now her young children must live their lives without their mother. It still burns me to my core, almost two years later.
Thanks for sharing your former situation. I'm so happy you saved yourself. If someone is out there that's being abused, listen to IntrepidBear. If your being victimized, seek help. If your gut tells you to get out.... it may very well be good advice to follow through.

I do not see a soul in his eyes, May he die! and When he does, his soul dies too. Erased! His eyes tell us that Hell is real!
Why Do some Men think they have to hurt Women?! I don't get it!
I am sorry for your loss.
This is a wake up call for abusive cops who jump through hoops and corupt the system. KNOCK IT OFF!
It is my opinion that his cop buddies looked the other way when it could have been stopped. WAKE UP AMERICA!
The Blood of the Red Dragon
For the very great majority, police officers are among the best and bravest of our communities. In this case, without question, the police officers were united against this man. This particular individual had no friends in the NYPD. Before and during trial they literally ensured he couldn't escape, and did fantastic work to ensure justice would be served when it was time.

Calm down.
I don't want to be mis quoted here. This could have been stopped.
As the OP said this was ongoing and was known about way before.
Nothing was done about it. Stop it in its Tracks is all I am saying.
Stuff like this incubates, it does not happen overnight.
The Fact he was a Cop. It is Taboo for me to say this, but Cops help their own and look the other way.
Ice T said it best. I cannot quote him because he is right. But there is an F in his Quote.
