    Default skill point information/questions

So i have a few quick rambling questions on the use of skill points.

from what i understood when taking 2 levels of rogue in a 2/6/12 build you take rogue at 1 and 10 for max investment of skillpoints at those levels

when using my char planner it only lets me spend 1 skillpoint at 10, but if i took that rogue at 8 it allows me to put the full 4 in.

is this related to INT and how high it has to be in order to invest more than 1 skillpoint per skill

reason being is i want to max rogue skills when i take rogue levels rather than just 1 skillpoint at the 2nd rogue level

    does that make sense?

what are the requirements to be able to invest more than 1 point per skill at taking my 2nd rogue level, and at what level should i take that at?

Each class has a number X that is added to your Intelligence modifier to determine how many skill points you get at a given level. Additionally, at first level a character gets (X + Int mod) * 4 skill points. This leads many people to believe that the rogue level should always be first, because rogues have the highest value for X. This belief is borne out by usually being correct, so without more detailed analysis you may as well go with it.

Now, +2 tomes are usually considered common for advanced character building purposes, and can be consumed at level 7. Because you have to be level 7 to consume it, a +2 Intelligence tome will only affect your skill points starting at level 8, so for builds with two rogue levels it makes sense to take the second rogue level at or after level 8 if you care about rogue-only skills, because you will be able to spend that point directly (as opposed to cross-class).

Finally, how many total points you can invest in any given skill is determined by your total level and class make-up. A skill that is a class skill for any of your classes has a maximum of (level + 3). For example, if you have a 9ranger/1rogue, you can have a maximum of 13 ranks in Disable Device. How many points you can invest at any given level is therefore determined by how many points you have in it already. If at level 8 you only had 9 ranks, you would be able to spend as many as 4 points (or 8 if the class you had just leveled in was spending cross-class). If at level 10 you had 12 ranks, you would only be able to spend as many as 1.
