Just as a side note: combat utility. Take the famous example of the F4 Phantom fighter jet in the Vietnam war. The top brass decided that all future air combat was going to consist of nothing but missiles in the new 'space' age. So they didn't have the contractors build guns on the jet. Big mistake. Even in the 'space' age of high-tech fighting, getting down dirty (dog fighting) still happened. Advantage MiGs....
So even in our high tech world of ground combat, soldiers will still fight hand to hand - and I'd much rather be the guy with the knife on the end of my empty rifle, turning it into an effective close combat weapon, than the guy who is standing there bare-handed.

Well, believe it or not I got the info from *gasp* books. I consider myself a bit of a military history buff.
But back on topic, I was considering starting another thread to also include other polearms (halberds, glaives, etc.) that use many of the same motions as quarterstaves do, using the same 'quick fix' idea to get them in the game too. But as this thread already has much of that information, I'd rather just tag a post in here making said suggestion. So please devs, until there is extra time and resources available for coding new animations for polearms, can't we at least get those that are close to quarterstaves in attack motions put in-game soon using the idea from the OP?

I thought that spears having reach was the whole point of having a spear. I also think it'd be cool if there were "set" and "charge" attacks much like trip etc, that could stop charging minoutars or advancing giants and hold them back for a bit. Or a charge that does extra damage after a sprint and can cause bleeding damage or something like that. The idea behind a spear is to add new game mechanics, widen the available fighting styles, and make the game more diverse and fun to play. Adding spears and leaving them essentially like staves would be kind of just another weapon like all the others, essentailly a staff that does piercing damage.
I think if you're addnig a new weapon type, give it some new abilities like reach, set, etc that give it some desiriability to be used over other weapons. As it is I don't see staves used very often anyway. I'd love spears, so make em awesome.
