Question What the heck is raid and how can i participate in one?

I tried to google the raid. So many and confusing information about raid but could not find a definition. I suspect it is a kind of quest/favor. I also noticed in-game that if I lead a party by right clicking on my char's name of party list i see the option to convert the party into raid...

    So my dumb question
What the heck is raid and how can i participate in one?

PS1 I also do not know what is farming but i understood some things about crafting.

PS2 forgive my ignorance I have a 20-years expirience at pen and paper (yes i have played DnD 1st edition), but MMORPG is new to me (I played a little the 4-story last year, but didn't like it to go deeper. DDO is MUCH-MUCH BETTER)

    PS3 DnD 4th edition SUCKS

    Default Raid

A raid is a special 12 player quest. Bigger and harder then any 6 person quest. There are several in the game.

    Chronoscope
    Tempest Spine
    13th Eclipse (Shroud)
    Hound of Xoriat

Those are probably the most popular. Check out the DDOwiki on Quests to find the full list of raids.

A raid is a 12 person mission with chances at good items for the level of the raid.

Well I thought that servers are all the same. Do they have differences? Anyway, Khyber is the server that I play, It was the recomended server when I created a character for a first time. First I thought it was some kind of noobie server - cause of the recomendation-, but later when a friend of mine created a character, the DDO lancher recomended another server, so now i suppose the recomendation is depended on trafic.

    Default Raids

Some raids are ran differently on each server specially the Shroud. Since I run the Shroud on three servers I have to remember which server I am on to adjust the sequence of portals and stuff.

Well, obviously I have to play some raids in order to get the whole picture. But it will take awhile. My highest character is now a Cl lvl7 while the lowest level of a raid quest is 10.

To add some information that wasn't covered here, some raids in the game require you to run several other quests first before you can run the raid, similar to a quest chain. And some force you to collect items from those qualifying quests before you are allowed to run the raid.

There are 2 raids that you can run without doing anything else beforehand: the Chronoscope (level 6) and Tempest Spine (level 10). Chronoscope is in the Devil Assault adventure pack, and Tempest Spine is free-to-play.

Edited to add: there are 3 more raids that can be run right away, in the Sub-Terrane: Garamol, Vision of Destruction and Hound of Xoriat (all level 18, and part of the Vale of Twilight adventure pack)

Yep. All the servers are the same. He's asking you to post the server so people know which server you can meet on. You have to be on the same server to play together.

There's different raids too, some are huge quests like tempest spine, shroud or von, others are single battles against the final boss of the pack's chain.

Either case the difficulty is higher so the challenge is such that team work is usually required (there's risk of failure).
Raids are also run more frecuently by high level players and only at level upon request (except the low lv raids).
(be it for the grinding, to get it done safely, to repeat with other toons or just because you eventually reach lv 20)

    Ooooh, now I got it!

Many questions come to my mind while reading the wiki (Help! Am I Raid Ready), but I will ask them when the time is more apropriate (when I meet the level prereq). But anyway raid looks very intersting and action promising! I will defenetly try it in the future...

    So my dumb question
What the heck is raid and
A quest unusually difficult for its level, which permit parties up to 12 people instead of usual limit of 6. They also have some restrictions like not allowing hirelings, or not allowing to enter more than once every three days.
how can i participate in one?
First, you have to be appropriate level. The lowest level raid is Chronoscope -- level 6. Others are all level 10 or higher. Second, only Tempest Spine (which is level 10) is free to play -- all others are included in paid packs. I think by the time you are ready to participate in a raid, you will know enough people to coordinate with.
PS1 I also do not know what is farming but i understood some things about crafting.
"Farming" means running same quest, or same wilderness zone, over and over in order to either collect a certain number of some treasure, or find a particular treasure which only appears once in a blue moon. For example, one of the most desired mid-level treasures is called Bloodstone, and it is ridiculously rare. Some people run Sands of Menchtarun dozens of times in hope of catching elusive Bloodstone. OTOH, Tapestry Shreds drop in Orchard of the Macabre quite often -- maybe 2 out of 3 chests, -- but you need 20 of them to get something useful. So people run Orchard over and over to get their 20 Tapestry Shreds. And then do it some more in order to sell them to less patient types
PS2 forgive my ignorance I have a 20-years expirience at pen and paper (yes i have played DnD 1st edition),
    Me too.
    Welcome to DDO!

    Amen to that.

A nitpick: Garamol is not a separate raid -- he is one of the rares in Sub-Terrane, which is a 12-person (e.g. raid) wilderness zone. Although my understanding is that Garamol's treasure chest is the main reason people go into Sub-Terrane. (The other reason is masochism. )
