I agree that as a civilian I may be concerned that the news is not reporting it.

As a servicemember though I realize that often the right hand does not speak with the left hand, and also that if it was a threat there would already be a task force dealing with it.

The reason its not on the news, is because it isn't news - honestly. Just think about how earlier in the year the news was constantly blowing up about the tensions with North Korea. If this was serious there would be reactions like that.

Well, the story and the accompanying image of the vapor trail for some reason made me recall the pic from Bloom County books I used to have... and a quick Google search later - viola! Bloom County = Awesome.

My wife used to ask why I'd think of these things - but she's given up asking by now.

Well if it makes the op feal better, as I was looking at this thread, I was flipping through the channels and saw virtually the same picture on fox news. With them saying something about norad and the pentagon saying nope we dont know anything about it. Video apparently was soon to follow but they didnt have it yet. Thought that was kinda funny. So atleast one of the major networks is carrying it.

As for it being a big deal... as per all the other posts, they cant make new weapons and not test them, and if they happen to get caught testing them, WHAT ARE they SUPPOSED to say, oh heres our new kick ass missle that we can blow up an ant in karakas with???

Yeah, looks like the story is starting to catch on a bit. And hey, I'm not saying it's time to put on the tinfoil hats or anything.

I just thought it was odd that an hour after some kid falls down a well or the first lady gets caught wearing an ugly outfit, it's on every news feed. But fire off a missile 30-odd miles off our coast that nobody has any clue about, and nobody really cares.

Yes, there's plenty of weapons testing that goes on all the time. I was in the military myself, but usually we had enough sense to NOT do things like this in full view of several million civilians.

*puts on tinfoil hat* Unless that was the test... See how the public would react to a missile launching close to home. Apparently, it's not so big of a deal after all. *leaves tinfoil hat on just in case and because it looks spiffy*
    Have a nice day!

estimated 35 miles off the coast they might have thought it was far enough out not to be noticed, but even that evident and only one video of its out there, i mean that says something to. If they caught it from the city and it was that far out, it couldnt have been something small, which kinda rules out terroists, theyd have pointed it at la, and kinda rules out rocketers... to big... Secrative military payload or missle test that was more visable than they thought it would be.... woopsy heh

I was driving to Starbucks a couple minutes ago and heard this reported on BBC World Service Newshour. Have to say it wasn't much of a story only 15 seconds spent on it.

Looks like it was probably just a plane...

    From the CNN article:
But John Pike, a defense expert who is director of GlobalSecurity.org, said he believes he has solved the mystery.

"It's clearly an airplane contrail," Pike said Tuesday afternoon. "It's an optical illusion that looks like it's going up, whereas in reality it's going towards the camera. The tip of the contrail is moving far too slowly to be a rocket. When it's illuminated by the sunset, you can see hundreds of miles of it ... all the way to the horizon."

And at the pic again, he may just be right.
    Optical illusions are fun!

I vote for the ICBM test from one of our tridents. Just a not-so-subtle reminder that, while yes there are missile silos dotting the forlorn areas of the heartland, we have 14 trident submarines, each of which when deployed is tied for the third largest nuclear power, or possibly fourth, depending on how many nukes china has, since each can carry something like 24 ICBM's with 10 mirv's apiece. 240-odd multi-megaton warheads is enough to turn all the important areas of even the largest countries into smoking radioactive rubble.

Not like we're going to actually push the button or something. I was never worried about the whole "looming nuclear holocaust" thing, since 1-We're the good guys (or something), so we're not going to just up and push the button, and 2-the guys in charge of the "Evil Empire" had caviar, vodka, mistresses, and dachas and never had to leave office ever. So, really pretty much no big hurry to push buttons either. Anyway, the real power nowadays is economic. And China has that in spades. How many of our t-bills are they holding?

Calm down everyone. It was actually a test firing of my nuclear powered potato gun in my ongoing attempt to be the first to put an unmanned vegetable into orbit. Let's just keep this between ourselves as I don't wish to explain how or where I managed to obtain my plutonium.

you would be surprised what doesent get on the news in north america, i can tell you first hand abbout messed up stuff that you would think would be media bombs that get compleetly ignored, probly because in north america, all mass media is owned by the same investors groups and they wont review anything thats not part of an established politicol agenda, least thats what i think

Okay, this is probably going to label me "that conspiracy guy" but if this were an airplane flying towards the camera, then why are there flashes of (what appear to be) flames clearly visible?

I would think that any exhaust flame would only be visible if the aircraft were flying away from the camera.

The CBS video I originally linked to has even been changed. The video cuts out right before you see the "flames". Fortunately there are plenty of other videos on the Interwebs that haven't been cut.

Watch an uncut video for yourself and see what you think. Just sayin'.

I do have to concede that circumstantial evidence says it's not a missile though: No alerts to testing, FAA didn't pick anything up, etc.
