Gotta try a few Belgian beers. Traditional product no1 since the Middle Ages.

Carefull though, our beer is a bit stonger then the beers from most other countries.
Duvel for example (one of my personal favorites) is 10%+.

I can assure you that whatever bad thing you have against alcohol, going onto a game forum and telling someone that they will do stupid things and become a loser because they want to enjoy a beverage is not the way to spread your message or the message you want to spread. A better one prolly would be " Make sure you are resonsible when you drink." Just because you dont approve of alcohol does'nt mean everyone should follow you.

Alcohol is a carrier that enhances smell, taste and flavor; just like salt, sweet, acid & fat. If you could make great tasting beer without fermentation (which would mean no sugar/carbs) I'd be happy as Larry, unfortunately you can't.

And regarding your "facts" how alcohol makes u a lowlife makes me think you've only tried Budweiser.

I can't speak for what is available in Singapore but I can give a general suggestion: look in your local entertainment paper to see if anyone is hosting a "beer tasting" or a "beer dinner". For all I know the idea has been around forver but I've only recently begun to notice them. They are like wine tasting/wine dinners of course and the goal is the same: to expand your horizons a bit. I like the idea of having an opportunity to sample several beers without having to pony up anywhere from $9US to $16US for a 4- or 6-pack only to discover that I don't like it.

In a similar vein, many restaurants offer a "beer sampler" typically consisting of 4-6 2 oz. glasses of various brews. If it's a chain restaurant, chances are that the samples will be from larger micros. For smaller micros, I've found that you need to hit your local pub-type establishment. Again, I have zero idea if Singapore has such things but, if they do, it's certainly worth checking out.

As far as mass produced globally available beers i'd suggest Guiness, Harp, Killian's, Bass, Rolling Rock, and of course Pabst Blue Ribbon

I feel a lot of beers on this list are not starter beers. I did not have my first beer till 2 weeks before my 21st birthday in a brewery in Germany. I was lucky enough to indulge in Guiness at the brewery on my 21st. But like rest and stazer, I know my beers (lost legions and all). Might I suggest Fat Tire my New Belgium Brewery as a fantastic starter beer. Start there and you won't be dissappointed. I make it a point to never really go cheaper than that (for me its just not worth it). If I'm going to enjoy my tasty adult beverage at the end of a long week at RAID night, I want it to be good and tasty. Right now I am frequenting Guiness or Great Divide Yeti, a chocolate stout. I am a big fan of the dark porters and stouts. I have too much of a sweet tooth to move to the IPAs at this point.
For tonights raid night, its not beer but Sean Minor pinot noir on the menu.

Very good idea. Sign up for newsletters from the local pubs. Many enthusiastic pub owners arrange beer tastings where they invite brewers and you get to sample a few bottles with others who is looking to learn more about beer.

Also an excellent opportunity to get some answers to whatever questions you have about beer etc, all in a relaxed atmosphere.

Rogue's Dead Guy ale is a wonderfully smooth Mai Bock. Great taste easy to drink.But all Rogue beers are of the highest quality.

I am also a huge fan of Rogue, some other great Oregon breweries include Ninkasi, Widmer (I prefer their Drop Top Ale), Deschutes (Mirror Pond), and Bridgeport (they make a great IPA).

It's Sierra Nevada 30th Anniversary Jack & Kens Ale.

Jack McAuliffe was the first American "micro" brewer. His tiny New Albion Brewery in Sonoma, California inspired countless upstart small-scale breweries around California and all over the US. Jack comes out of retirement to guest brew this very ale.

This Black Barleywine Ale is a nod to the legendary ales New Albion served at their legendary summer solstice parties. Rich with bittersweet and roasted malt flavors, balanced with whole-cone American hops.

This ale should age gracefully for years, if thats your thing. Me? I'll just pour me a glass and be good for a while

Ok so no such thing as a good American beer? Then Germany is your destination. Luckily, you can find this beer served in many different countries:



Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock

Near-black pour with a small collar of iron foam. Very nice aroma, a symphony of different malt-types. There are lots of malty characteristics, chocolate and smoked malts being the most prominent. It smells like very dark bread (schwartzbrot), chocolate, nuts, coffee-beans. It is as though you are standing with pure, un-processed black-malt of high quality. Taste is very much like the aroma. Black malts, some smoke, moderate but adequate bitterness, chocolate, coffee, some sugar and dark bread. Low carbonation, medium duration, medium-big body.

I'm not a huge beer drinker, but Sam Adams and Newcastle are two of my favorite standards and very easy to drink.


Getting into more micro-brewed and lesser known labels outside of the States or Europe (even major labels from Europe) will be harder to find most likely. I just moved from LA to the Denver area and so far, I can't find Palm Speciale, my favorite import (yes, Newcastle is an import, too, but it's almost too readily available to be considered so ).


And haven't found Beamish anywhere yet.

Being in Singapore, the grocers there would probably have Kirin Ichi and Sapporo.

I enjoyed that beer. I also enjoyed Oyster Omelets.

Major knock against Singapore, no beaches. OK, a small one, but Singapore is surrounded by ocean and all it is is concrete.

Since you're in Asia, keep an eye out for Suntory Premium Malts. It's pretty great for a mass-produced can beer.

Other than that, and assuming you'll be going to import shops keep an eye out for Spaten, Newcastle, Samuel Smith. I fear that many of the smaller brands listed in this thread may be difficult to find outside of the Western Hemisphere. You might do better to list what you can find and ask which are good/decent to try.

Asian beer in general is pretty bad, but it's fairly easy to drink (which is pretty good for a newbie, I guess). You'll probably want to start with whatever imported lagers and lighter ales you can find, then work into porter, stout, and darker ales.

The US really does have great beers these days.

As a beginner beer drinker I would really just reccomend you try EVERYTHING. Try the cheap 'grocery' brands, bud light, coors light, Pabst blue ribbon, other cheap beers- they will at least give you a perspective of what most people drink and how boring and bland they are!

Then reach for some more interesting things like;

Killians Irish red which is one of my personal favorite widely available beers. Can get it at most bars/restaurants and its a very nice beer to drink from a glass.

Leinenkugel's Berryweiss, this is a beer brewed with a lot of berries and it comes off with a very tasty fruity flavor. Another one of my odd favorites.

Harp. Nothing too fancy but a very solid beer. Another of my widely available favorites.
Start trying a few IPAs here, and bocks, and porters, specific types now that you have a rough idea what your tasting!

Woodchuck! Definitely not beer at all but its still delicious. Like someone posted earlier, its apple cider with alcohol! Very crisp and delicious.

THEN once you have a solid basis in the world of beer start reaching for some of the more expensive microbrewery craft beers.

This is the tier where you can start trying the Arrogant Bastard, Founders ,the STONE brew line, and Dogfish Head.

Id definitely reccomend Dogfish Head's Punkin Ale to any people here who like tasty beer. Its a pumpkin beer and has a very cinamon-like flavor. One of the best beers ive ever had. Also recommend their 90 minute IPA for the IPA fans.

I also tried a Founders breakfast stout recently, wow that was unique. Very tasty. Chocolate beer? Why not!

There is no best beer, it all depends on what you are going for at the time. Do you want a delicate-treat-beer or do you want a hearty beer to drink nightly with your evening meal. Try everything and don't be pretentious about your beer! If you like it you like it! As you drink more and more your taste will continue to evolve anyway.
