Get yourself a beer glass. Don't drink from the bottle. That's fine for schlep like Bud or Coors. With a good beer, you're going to want to smell it as you drink. It's part of the experience.

Well for American beers samuel adams has a wide variety try their October fest or their winter lager as others have said Sappro is not bad at all.

Best cheap beer I think is PBR (extensive testing)

Best beer to drink warm Guinness (my grandfather kept his on the hearth above the fire place...)

I would highly suggest picking up the Sam Adams October fest, has a good strong taste. Also if you live in New England you might be able to get the Sam Adams 12 pack that is 3x of 4 different beers, all of which are great.

Dont worry about getting anything special right now. A simple pint glass will do just fine. Keep two in the cabnet and two in the freezer and you're set.

I have yet to find a Stone Brewing product I didn't like. It's especially nice when you can get Arrogant Bastard on tap for 2.50 a pint
And it's not an IPA, but Ruination IPA is quite tasty as is their Stone IPA.

I used to be a stout guy, but I've moved almost exclusively onto IPAs and other very hoppy beers. I still enjoy a good stout once in a while\ though. Especially oatmeal stouts.

Every time you go to the store, get a different 6 pack. THen you'll start to see what you like and don't like and you can go from there. Or try to find a bar with a large selection of on-tap beers. Most of the time they will allow you a small sample taste of stuff.

It is a good beer. Their quality has gone down a bit though. They still have a brewery down the road from me, so I get it fresh. But since they changed ownership its not as good. Their baltic porter is still very solid though.

I like Bells but they are hit or miss. They also seem to be more pricey than others. Granted their Expedition stout is amazing. Their Double Bock not so much.

OP I wish I could recomend beer to you but given your location and the lack of solid distobution for craft breweries you wouldnt be able to get them.

But start easy and build your palate. It takes time trust me. Alot of what I drink now are bigger beers. Meaning lots of complex and aggressive flavor. But then again there are times I just want an easy drinking beer.

Rogue's Dead Guy ale is a wonderfully smooth Mai Bock. Great taste easy to drink.But all Rogue beers are of the highest quality.


Breckenridge's Vanilla Porter is an easy beer to drink and a great intro to porters. Its smooth, med body and a slight smokey hint of Vanilla. Its good in a sniffer because it breathes better. But a mug or stine is fine aswell.

Heavy Seas Gold ale is another easy beer. Nice gold color, Slightly fruity, very crisp. It just rolls.

Being new to beer I would try something easier on the palate. Go for a German Pilsner style or wheat type beer such as a Hefeweizen to start you off, do not get into a big beer (high gravity beer) until you start get used to the lighter beers.

I am not sure what brands you get in your area but typically Budweiser, Coors, Miller Lite are all pretty much garbage when it comes to being a good representation of beer.

Guiness is probably the best stout with good name recognition out there. Sam Adam's has a great selection of beers that are good drinking for both new and experienced drinkers. Newcastle Brown Ale is good and Beck's is also decent.

Personally, I like big beers. As a homebrewer I tend to keep a pilsner/lager/wheat beer on tap plus a heavy IPA/Stout (i run 2 taps). If you begin enjoying IPA's the best is produced by Russian River Brewing out of San Francisco, CA. Pliny the Elder and their seasonal Pliny the Younger may be the best IPAs out there.

Try Genesee Cream Ale if you can find it. Very smooth and has a good flavor.
