Default need happy pugging stories :(

... cos pugging can so often be awful on a cleric...

(was just in a SOS ... poor buffing, poor tactics, poor other stuff... wipe... and although it's not said... who gets blamed? i am not the best player and this particular build is sub optimal.. but still... )

so... i know that there a lot of us out there playing clerics who need *happy* cleric stories.... even if it's just 'i had a couple of hours pugging last night and they were the best and funniest bunch of puggers'.

please post happy cleric pugging stories

(although if you've had a miserable time pugging recently and want a hug you can post too for sympathy)

EDIT: only happy stories from clerics/Fvs please - because until you've pugged a cleric/fvs i think you really don't fully understand why this thread is necessary. particularly for newer players.

My happy FvS stories usually start with another divine in the group, willing to do the healing duties.

Was doing Tor at-level yesterday, and when we had to split up the WF barb (think he was a barb, meh) told the cleric and other folks to go on one side, me and him on the other, cause he doesn't really need heals. Was probably the biggest compliment I ever got in this game. <3

That didn't really help, did it?

Got rejected from a Temple of Vol farming group that was looking for a fwaller even though I can solo the quest with BBs? At least I got a polite rejection, that's kinda happy, no?

Or those times when I say to myself "okay, maybe if I don't BB and kite, let the melee hit stuff and feel good about it, maybe I'll use up less mana so whatever", and then watch them take FOREVER to kill a single mob while requiring constant spammage of heal? It usually ends up with a BB or a few cometfalls anyway, that's kinda happy-ish too, no?

This seems like a good place to share some experiences from my first TR. I will acquiesce your request and give two stories:

    Good:

I few days ago when i was still lvl 9 I started a Deleras group to farm parts 2-4. Took the first 5 to join, nothing elitest in the LFM or anything, just "Deleras parts 2-4 farm."

The party was excellent. People listened to my directions, we split up to do optionals in part 2, ransack, conquest in parts 2 and 4. No deaths. Part 4 we farmed about 8 times and at the end I was still getting over 1k/min. Only reason I stopped was because I got tired of part 4 and was about to hit lvl 11 so would stop gaining exp. Oh, and the cleric zerged and turned undead and fought with a holy blunt weapon; everything I hoped he would do.

    Bad:

Yesterday I was farming Wiz King (now lvl 13). I farmed it 3x solo to make sure I didn't get any -10p on my full exp runs, then opened up the LFM. LFM read roughly "Wiz king farming, split up on towers." It fills up within 2 minutes. 3 other TRs join (warchanter, FvS, monk), two guildies, and me. I had already stepped in and summoned a hastebot/reconstruct bot so it was 5 real people in the group. I figured we'd knock out the towers fast. The first run two of the TRs die, my other guildie dies too. I have to do two towers, pick up soulstones, then help on the last tower. After that run the bard leaves and we go in again. I ask the monk TR if he can solo a tower. He says he doubts it. I then send the other three people in the group to do one tower while I do the other two. All three of them die, I end up carrying them and soloing all three towers. After that run I thank them all, drop group, and farm wiz king 4 more times until I level.

    Default Nice Delera's Pug

    - Delera's ... cleric me (lvl 8), another cleric (lvl 6?), ranger, barbarian, rogue, and someone else (can't remember, sorry); one was a fellow guildy
    - leader gave great directions and was patient
    - people waited for buffs
    - buffs were given
    - smart play (protect cleric, take out casters, prepare before attacking boss, ...)
    - group appreciated heals
    - guildy patiently told me how to advance quest (harpo thing) - thanks so much!
    - I learned new things (eg. archer skeletons won't follow, how to advance the quest, ...)
    - one of the best (and most relaxing) pugs I have done since I started in Dec 2009
    - and I got voice of the master

Thank you to all the members of that party.

Ugh, I hate it when the group "appreciates" heals. It usually means they've bitten off more than they could chew on numerous occasions, and viewed the divine as someone who'll save their sorry ass every time.

Not always, mind you. But often. At least from my experience.

Also, I don't know how to respond to "thanks for the heal", should I start thanking rogues for disarming traps? Barbarians for raging? Should I say "NP" even though I could've used my mana on a billion more efficient things? Am I socially ******** (don't anwser that one)?

Want to be a happy cleric?

Make sure you have 6 members of the party to negate the silly scaling.

When they die, do not raise them. (most of the pugs out here....it wont take long).

Make sure you grab their stones though so that their ghosts will follow you and you can show them how it should be done.

Drop stones near shrine after quest is complete..(dont want to be a complete ass), recall, thank the people for an awsome group, and then leave party

    Fun times.

I was just in a party without a healer for madstone crater. We didn't have a cleric or someone who could heal, so we picked up two cleric hirelings. It went very smoothly. I actually counted the number of times I healed someone with my hireling.

    Get ready for it.

9 times. 9 Times in one of the most annoying and longest quests of gianthold. If a "healer" had joined like the party leader was asking for, they would have jumped into a group with 300 cure serious wounds pots between them, several barkskin and curse removal pots, along with a rogue who came equipped with 5 scrolls of invisibility and an easy 10k xp.

Guess how many pots we used all together?

    0

Yeah... 15 heals between the whole party. If only a proper cleric joined, then we probably could have gotten it done in less than 30 minutes. That could have been a real success story.

If there's anything I've learned, it's attempting to crack as many jokes as possible while in ANY party. If you find someone who has a sense of humor in the process, it's even better. Anything that pulls their focus OUTSIDE of DDO while playing DDO is always a welcoming thing.

Someone falling behind? Tell them to stop chasing the invisible leprechauns.
Someone not paying attention? Tell them to stop reading porn.
Someone zerging without consent? Tell them to stop running like they have a pipe shoved up their flamethrower.
Someone charging a red-named without thinking? Tell them girls on their period are very very angry people.

Even if they think poorly of your work, they'll invite you again, even if it's just for giggles. People don't have to laugh to appreciate the gesture.

Another happy story is when I was a cleric in a party of 3 clerics. We were all lowbies taking on the butcher's path. 1 Cleric didn't like to party with others because he's more of a solo artists. He made an exception since we were all in the same guild.

With just the 3 of us, we easily took down butcher's path.

1 more happy story for kicks.

I was in a party for kobold assault with another cleric. We were playing it on elite which imo can sometimes be like a low level raid. We managed to get through it without dying and the others even guarded us while we clerics rested to recover sp. The success might have also had something to do with taking turns healing. I healed first, and when I was out of sp, the other cleric jumped in to heal. We switched like that. Best thing of all? 3/4 of the others had a huge load of pots.
Very smooth for something that can go horribly wrong very easily.

this is true. but if they start getting snarky then it's generally too hard to get the laughs back. (might want to change that last comment too lol... it's going to offend people...)

oh excellent... actually this remidns me of my own happy cleric story now i think of it...

i was level 5 and had just lfmed for stk part 3 window farming. not surprizingly got a TR and another very cluey player who joined and the 3 of us farmed that for a while. the TR then asked me (actually they had to convince me 'cos i swore i would never ever do that quest) to do Vile Apocathery. at level 5. elite. far out i hate that quest. he got a bunch of guildies/TR friends and what-ho d4mn we did that quest at level, elite, no reentrys, tyvm. they even spawned one of those sp shrines before the last boss (which is incidently the only time i've been in a group and seen it done). this person was from Jesters, a really good raiding guild on Khyber and i wish i remembered their name. it was fun and it was awesome to watch. (oh and to heal too of course...)

moar happy storiez plz. real stories. warm-the-cockles-of-our-hearts stories. any level, any newness.

    Ok, how's this?

A while back I joined a group doing "Where there's Smoke" - can't remember what difficulty for certain, but I think it was Elite. I was on my tempest ranger and there was a cleric and I think a paladin - can't remember the rest. All good players. Good smooth run.

At the end we set up and wait for the end mobs to spawn while one person goes and puts the fire out. I got the brilliant idea that I would set up behind the spawning mobs (I multi-classed rogue and wanted sneaky damage). Unfortunately, I mis-judged where the bad guys were going to spawn.

They spawned right *behind* me, and I was dead before I could even turn around.

After the quest the cleric actually apologized to me for letting me die.

And here's the best part. I said "No. That wasn't your fault. That was my fault."

Does that count as a happy story? Or at least an amusing one?

Ok, bonus story: I join pugs and bring my own healing, cleric or no.

This was my "Happy Pugging Story" too, as a level 12 Ranger doing "The Enemy Within" today on Elite as a first timer. Great guide, good cleric, and party that knew how to take out bosses quickly. I told the Cleric I could handle self-healing in between fights, could hit a couple players with elemental resists, and I also handed him a CSW wand I had (my other character is a cleric, so I try to make their job easier if I can ) I ended up getting MAJOR XP and loot out of it as well, and didn't die (or come close to it) the entire quest. One of my best experiences in the game to date.

The Enemy within Elite is a terrible quest.

I PUG decent things all the time; shrouds, Reavers, DQ2's basically never fail.

Been in alot of good pugs over time. Haven't been in any pugs lately though. I only have high level quests and epics left to do on my cleric and most of them posted are looking for people that have experience at the quest and playing healer in them with no experience at the quest scares the hell out of me. I fell far behind in my gear and I only hope I can catch up.

My happiest pugging story is real old, from my very first cleric way back when. I was essentially just playing a healbot since I was new to the class. At one point, while BSing with a RL friend and drinking, I realized that not only was I keeping the party alive without issues, but I was doing it one-handed. Finally, I had found the best class to play when I can't even see the screen that well
