    Default A Game of Thrones

Here is a teaser clip from the approaching HBO series based on George R. R Martin's fantasy novels.

I'm very excited to see his vision done in this way.

I'd be even more excited to have Book Five: A Dance With Dragons in my hand, but that is another thread for later.

    Anyway, here's the clip.

If the books haven't made a fan of you, perhaps the series will. I know I have high hopes for it....

    Thanks all.

That series was difficult for me - every time I thought I'd figured out who the star player was, they died off.

Very good read, especially if you're a fan of "anything goes".

Love the series. The only problem I have is the length of time between books being released. I've read the 1st one 4 times, 2nd one 3 times, 3rd one 2 times.......due to the large amount of time between releases.

I read all of my books an obscene amount of times - even the ones that I hate.

"Her Majesty's Wizard" - could you be any more pompous and self-righteous? Guess I'll read it again to find out

I'm betting that the next Game of Thrones novel will be released before the next Wheel of Time novel at least...

If you like this book series.. and you love dark, more adult themed books rather then the shiny sword and dragon fantasy stuff I HIGHLY recomend Steven Eriksons Malazan Empire series. Its at 9 books now, with final being released in January and its an incredable read.

But its not for the normal reader, the content is deep and hard to follow, but its a great story, very rewarding.

(also great to see the HBO clip, hope this works better then the "seeker of truth" tv show, which was horrible)

I'm sooo excited that this GoT series is actually happening. I love the books, even if the wait for the next one has become frustratingly long. HBO looks like they are seriously committed to make this good -- it's going to make me break down to finally get premium cable. There's a whole website for it here: http://www.makinggameofthrones.com/

It's nice to see other fans around here... guess I shouldn't be surprised

Thanks for the headsup, will definitely be watching for this crossing the Atlantic to the UK.

And on the subject of really good fantasy authors, especially for those who like George Martin, Robin Hobb, etc, etc, I cant recommend enough "The name of the wind" by Patrick Rothfuss. Quite simply the best "new" fantasy author I have read in decades.

Just be warned, he freely admits in his blog to having been totally unprepared for "making it" as an author, and there is likely to be a long wait between sequels. But at least book 2 is looking close to finally arriving early next year. And book 1 as a stand alone is really exceptional.

Have yet to recommend it to any high fantasy fan who didnt really enjoy it.

    Cheers,

    Sirac

My inference is that either Mr. Martin is being advised or that he has intuited that A Dance With Dragons could make him a great deal of money. If his audience is sufficiently anxious for its release, it will pay for the hardback, initial release. The HBO series is excellent publicity. I expect that more people will be reading the books as a result of the series and that the clamor for a finale will be enormous. The question in my mind is: Had he already finished it when he said he had, almost two years ago?

Remember how long it took for Pulp Fiction to be released on DVD? I think it was almost three years (an unprecedented delay, these days) after its cinema end that it was finally released.

I resent having to be subjected to any marketing strategies behind art. My own opinion is that Mr. Martin is holding the manuscript hostage.

Unfortunately not. Brandon Sanderson has already announced that the next WoT novel is finished and on the way to printers. According to his site Mr. Martin is still working on A Dance with Dragons but has been making good progress.

I enjoy both series and will get both in Hardback but The Wheel of Time is more of an appetizer to tide me over till Mr. Martin's main course.

I like the way you think! Of course, I am a terribly cynical bastard.

I would probably buy into this notion if it was not for Martin's track record. This is not the first time he has taken a loooong time to finish a novel (nor will it be the last). Keep in mind there was a 5 year window between aSoS and aFfC. The problem is really one of GRRM having his hand in too many cookie jars at the sametime. That and he is a natural writer; meaning he writes when he feels like it, rather than as part of his daily routine (a la Stephen King).

Could not agree more, Malazan book of the fallen is a stunning series.

About Game of Thrones, I have some skepsis against tv shows based on fantasy, they seldom end up great. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Huzzah! Honestly the best fantasy series I've ever read. Actually named my main, "Likely Luke" after one of the minor characters.

The bad part is that I'll now have to get HBO and hope that it doesn't conflict with one of my wife's shows.

Very much looking forward to this, hopefully I'll be able to legit watch-buy it online when it comes out so I won't have to wait for the DVD.

The Song of Ice and Fire series is a personal favorite. That said, I long for a day when fantasy writers write standalone books and not feel obligated to release "Book 17 of the Xybligart Saga." It makes it difficult to track down, especially if you don't "buy in" right when the first book is out. I just want a one-book story, ya know?

George R.R. Martin has plenty of one book stories that has taken him away from what he should be doing, and that is finishing the darned saga!

You have NO IDEA how ****ed I was when I picked up A Feast for Crows and it didn't include Bran/Ricken and Daenerys!!!!

So I just said "screw it," gave away my books of his, and won't read another thing by him.

Yeah I didn't like A Feast of Crows much at all, I kept waiting for the "real story" to kick in. But I love the series otherwise.
