I'm into all kinds of thrash and death metal. Blues and classic rock are big favorites. I'm not into R&b, rap, or country. With a few exceptions, i'll add.
For instance, the new Heathen album is really good, reunited after many years like Testament and Forbidden, and can lay out some breakdowns that make the mall-metal deathcore kids cry
Great news. The second and final Control Denied album is going to finally be completed. Chucks parents have blessed off on it and rich, steve, shannon, and tim are going to complete it per chucks wishes. Yes the new Heathen is sick. Just saw Exodus, Testament and Megadeth in March. The new Nevermore drops soon too.

    On the Iced Earth question.

    Id Go with Albums:

Something Wicked This way comes: Stand out tracks Burning Times,Consequences, Reaping Stone, Melancholy, Watching over me, and the something wicked trillogy,

Dark Saga: Stand out tracks: I died for you,The hunter, A question of heaven.

The Glorious Burden: Stand out Tracks: Gettysburg,Greenface, The Reconing, Red Baron, When the eagle cries.

Strapping young lad, Machine head, Devildriver, Gojira, Meshuggah to name but a few that havent been mentioned yet. Often is the time i get invited to a group and the first message in party chat is 'Off ears, crankin tunes'
A freind of mine used to crank SYL through his mic every time someone asked for songs, wether he was on his bard or not.

How can you not classify Maiden as metal? Considering they are arguably the most influential metal band outhere.
Slayer havent released a worthwile album since seasons in the abyss. Everything since has sounded rehashed and uninspired. Oh and Slayer used to be a Maiden cover band called Dragonslayer. Dimmu hasnt released a solid black metal disk since Spritual Black Demensions. Hatebreed are hardcore. Chimaria are ok. I dont really see anything you listed being seen as" real metal" compared to what I and others have said. That being said I do enjoy Lamb Of God and have been seeing them live sine 97 in Richmond Va as Burn The Priest. I still remember when Prosthetic Records was shopping them.

Emperor will always blow the doors off Dimmu. Anthems to the welken at dusk is one of the finest symphonic black metal albums recorded.

Not sure how I forgot to mention Machinehead, SYL, or Meshuggah. MachineHead have released two classics with Burn my eyes and The Blackening. SYL released City which is monumental.

I definitely listen to metal the most of any music type when playing DDO.

A close second would be soundtracks, preferably ones for fantasy or sci-fi movies.

Listing favorites is pretty hard as 90% if my collection is well-loved .. but here are some that I always enjoy. Many of these are more on the epic side which I find goes well with long sessions.

    Judas Priest - Nostradamus
Amon Amarth - With Oden on Our Side
    Death - Leprosy
    Enslaved - Vikingligr Veldi
    Rhapsody - Dawn of Victory
Sonata Arctica - Days of Greys
    Satyricon - Dark Medieval Times
    Epica - Design Your Universe
    Candlemass - Death Magic Doom
Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle Earth
Immortal - At the Heart of Winter

A lot of serious metalheads hate that band for some reason, but I love 'em! Dethklok is just plain well-crafted music.

Other than Nostradamus that is a killer list. And I agree Dethklock is great and besides you have Gene The Machine Hoglan on drums. What not to like?

    Default Sensing...

Sensing a predjudice against original metal?
Bands that practically single-handedly invented metal.

Metal and DDO just go together, from the old classics like Maiden, Testament and (pre Zakk Wylde) Ozzy and Sabbath to the super fitting European Black/Death stuff like Emperor, Enslaved, Carcass and Dissection.

Old Emperor or Enslaved just seems so fitting when muching around in the Orchard.

I like some of Dimmu's stuff but agree they peaked a few Albums ago and yes IMO Emperor is a far superior band. Don't care for some of the things they have been involved with and can say from personal experience that they aren't the friendliest bunch but Anthems and Equilibruim IX just F***** destroy.

They are up there with Carcass's Heartwork for greatest all time "underground" metal record IMHO.

I cant agree more. I liked Dimmu's first 3 disks. Then they became synth heavy and really weak on the metal.
Carcass's Heartwork is just a monumental album in all respects. It had so much impact as its insperation changed soundscape of death metal. So many bands of the NWOSDM era were heavily influenced by that record.

Another album that I feel was really influential was Immortal's Pure Halcaust. I would also have to say that Immortal's At the heart of winter album really shook things up.

Immortal is pretty much awesome. Was fortunate enough to see them live in a small venue right up close. This was right after In the Heart of Winter came out.

And yeah... Heartwork is a masterpiece. As a guitar player it had a huge influence on me. On my short list of records that changed the way I looked at the guitar. Amott/Steer are right up there for me with Randy Rhoads, Dave Murrey, Hendrix, Jake E. Lee and EVH as far as shaping my playing/writing. So heavy yet catchy.

Hope to see Maiden this summer. Caught them two years ago and it might have been the best show I've ever seen. They did the Live After Death stage show with a few songs from Somewhere in Time thru fear of the Dark thrown in for good measure.

Was pretty cool to see that stageshow seeing as I missed it back in '85 as I was 8 years old lol.

Whiel the whole band was great, ****inson in particular impressed me. He soulded just like he did 20 + years ago. So many singers don't. Yes Ozzy I'm looking at you!

I completely agree. I do love Chuck Shuildner's guitar work. He was slightly off the beaten path and his riffs from Individual Thought Patterns to the Control Denied stuff were melodic yet intricate and technical. As a bass player Ive always been fascinated with Steve Digorgios work. The bass players for Death always had some serious riffs to play.

I caught Megadeth Testament and Exodus in March. I try to catch Testament everytime I can. Alex Skolnick to me is almost everything you could want in a guitar player. he can play rythems really well and is an amzing soloist who has only improved his playing.

I heard Slayer and Testament are coming to my neck of the woods this summer. I can take or leave Slayer live (they are so **** lound you can't make out what song they are playing) but would love to see Testament.

Will have to revisit Death some night on youtube. A drummer I played with was a huge fan and while I'm not overly familiar with their stuff I always liked what I heard.

Honestly haven't listened to much extreme stuff lately. Been listening to Sabotage era Sabbath, W.A.S.P.'s Headless Children (actually really good! never heard this as a kid!) and LTJ Bukem (DnB) and classical.

    God I love youtube!
