I'd have to go with Sole Salvation by English Beat and Where the Streets Have No Name by U2.

Burning Photographs is a good one too.

However when I want to get pumped up I will pop in Here I go Again by White Snake followed by Cherry Pie Warrant.
The Rat Pack is at the top of my list when I am running around town in Vegas! It just fits... timeless!

    This one is tough.

You see there are different types of driving.

You have late night drives in the country. You have super-late night drives in the city - post bar hours. There is rush hour traffic. You have cruising in the burbs. The is sunny day driving in the city.

    Hmm?

    I'll split mine up.

For rush hour traffic I usually make things worse for myself and play metal or very heavy music: Tool, Disturbed, old Minisitry or punk like Black Flag and the Misfits. That way I pull my steering wheel apart and punch my dashboard to pieces before I get home.

For cruising in the day time in the city: Bob Marley or other various Reggae is nice.

For late night drives in the country or along the open highway I tend to listen to entire CD's: Morphine, Audioslave, quiter and more recent PJ Harvey, old Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. The Doors are great for long late-night highway drives - think "Riders on the Storm."

Then you have late night city driving. All the lights are flashing yellow. It feels like it is only you out driving at 4 AM. I like Soul Coughing's "Screenwriter's Blues" at those times. Old Goth stuff is cool too, like "Bela Lagosi's Dead."

And let's not forget hot date music!

You're out with a beautiful woman, and what is playing inside the car? Sade. That's hook up music. We used to rate how awesome the night was by how many Sade CD's we went through (usually inside our places and not in a car, though.) on repeat or in the CD changer.

"Dude! She was smoking hot! What a night! Sade played from like midnight to almost like 5 AM!!"

Anyway, like I said, tough topic. You can see I could go on forever.

    Cool idea, though, Bekki!

Thanks for the thread. There hasn't been much that has caught my interest on these forums in a long while.

    I drive one of these:

    It sounds like this:

    VTR1000 noise

I have no need for "music" when I'm out on it

Still, if I'm in a car I guess I'd have: (all are clickable linkies for listening pleasure - apologies for some of the ropey fan made stuff, but the audio is good and Youtube is still bare knuckle scrapping with dodgy record exec greed meisters)

A rock out list (if you gotta get somewhere fast or you just don't like pedestrians)

    Nine Inch Nails - Deep
System of a Down - Chop Suey
    Limp Bizkit - Rollin
Flyleaf - Sick (T-Virus Mix) also possibly the best machinima video ever made (WoW & Bioshock based)
    Metallica - Through The Never
    Korn - Its On
    Pantera - Walk
Rammstein - Feuer Frei Awesome lego video too.
A Perfect Cicle - Judith n.b. contains 1 rude word - so don't play it at max volume in your office.
    Iron Maiden - The Trooper

Slightly more techno/dance list (if that's more your bag, or you're driving to a club - a club that's been sucked into a wierd timewarp where its 1990 all over again)

The Prodigy - Firestarter Memories of a favourite: Wipeout 2097.
    Death In Vegas - Aisha
New Order - Confusion (Pump Panel Reconstruction)
Snap - Rhythm is a Dancer
    Sash - Encore Une Fois
    Darude - Sandstorm
    Brainbug - Nightmare
    Robert Miles - Children
Daft Punk - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger no hands or other body parts in this video.
Utah Saints - What Can You Do For Me

And the chilled out peaceful drive in the country or at 3am somewhere.

    Adiemus
    Jan Hammer - Crocketts Theme
    Enya - Bodicea
    Apocalyptica - Nothing Else Matters
Enigma - I Love You I Kill You oddly, one of my favourite guitar solos ever is in a non rock song.
    Rodrigo y Gabriela - Orion
Ed Alleyne Johnson - Oxford IV
    Michael Nyman - The Promise
    Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
Trevor Jones / Randy Edelman - Last Of The Mohicans Soundtrack

If you're going with Golden Earring at #1 you gotta have Twilight Zone. Radar Love gets old about midway through.

    My 2 cents.

    My 2 cents.
I had to start somewhere, so I figured go with a classic,
There have been so many great additions
Since this started, and I knew I would be re-thinking my list.

    Outstanding reccomendations all!

    Just, WOW!

maybee a bit off topic ...

next time the guy in the car next to you, be it at a stop light or gas station or wherever, has the bass booming in the trunk loud enough for the licence plate to raddle off its screws, try this ...

turn up the treble on your car stereo (stock car sterio is fine) just up from midway, turn the bass down slightly, crank up the volume and load sammy hagar heavy metal into your cd player. (dont try this with a cassette, you may get laughed at) the only thing missing from this combination would be a camera to catch the look on the guys face. with the right settings, and on the right verse, the noise could possibly shatter glass. (slightly exaggerated of course). sammy is always just a click away in my vehicle.

actually, black betty was wrote by an alabama prisoner working on a chain gang. (im pretty sure it was alabama) the song was first made famous by ram jam, and since redone by any number of groups. spiderbait could have been one of them, im not sure.

I have a handful of songs on my iPod that I listen to when I drive, and I drive a lot. I have about an hour and a half in my driving songs playlist, so won't list them all here but have a few favorites, depending on my mood.

Anything by Billy Bragg, Pete Seeger, Utah Phillips or Phil Ochs, when I am on the road for a long haul. Maybe throw a little Steve Earl in there for a mixup, or maybe some Rush.

If I am getting tired, I play....

    1. Paranoid and Iron Man, Black Sabbath
    2. Aces High, Run to the Hills, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Iron Maiden.
    3. Indians, I am the Law, and various others by Anthrax.
    4. Breaking the Law, Judas Priest.
    5. Anything at all by Rage Against The Machine.
    6. Sex Pistols
    7. Ramones.
    8. Offspring.
Thelanis; Strngrdanger, Likkerpig, Byrnt, Obgynkenobi, Severancepay, Buffystmarie.
