hi i am new to wizards and had a questions about them

hello, i am new to ddo,(about 2 days in) and was curios how wizards ( and all casters for that matter ) obtain new spells. do we get scrolls from the world and scribe them. or buy them from vendors and scribe them. or lvl and get them as a lvling reward? i mean what do u do? thanks for anyone reading this

Welcome to being a Wizard! To answer you questions, yes, at lvl 1 you get a feat called "Inscribe spell" this needs to be put on a hotbar and be used when you have the appropriate lvl spell materials i.e. lvl 1 spell material to scribe a lvl 1 spell. You have to have a material, of the appropriate lvl spell for each spell that you wish to scribe into your spellbook. You can find scrolls during your adventures of your can buy some of them from vendors. I.e. Marketplace = Rusty nail.

You get 2 wizard spells when you lvl up to put into your spell book. There are a few spells, such as dimension door that used to be available to buy at the scroll shops but not anymore, so you are relegated to finding them during adventures or looking on the auction house to find them, or pick them as one of your 2 lvl up spell selections.

Didn't realize I hadn't leveled high enough until I went to allocate them to slots and realized I didn't have the slots. Anyways, what I generally do is buy all the scrolls for the specific level, then when leveling up I pick the ones I don't have scrolls for.

You shouldn't be able to inscribe spells that are beyond your Spell Level though.


Example: I can't inscribe (not to use, just to have in my spell book) Wall of Fire, a level 4 Spell, until my toon is a high enough level to cast Level 4 spells.

Just to clear up some things: At every level, the Wizard gains 2 new spells, which he can put into any spell level (So a level 13 wizard could select a level 1 spell and a level 6 spell)

If you wish to inscribe a spell higher than on you can cast (2*wizard level +1), it will not show up in your spell log, but upon reaching the requisite level, you can use it normally.

As opposed to Sorcerors, who cannot inscribe spells, and have a fixed amount of spells which they know.

And yes, certain scrolls cannot be bought from vendors. Scroll Vendors exist in the following places:
Rusty Nail (low lvl)
House Phiarlin at the back (mid level)
House Jorasco in the middle south (high level)
Portable Hole (All levels) (Must teleport here)

The list of scrolls which cannot be bought, as far as I remember are:
Wall of Fire (Level 4)
Dimension Door (Level 4)
Cloudkill (Level 5)
Protection from Elements (Level 5)
Acid Fog (Level 6)
Symbol of Fear (Level 6)
Protection from Elements, Mass (Level 7)
All level 8 scolls.

Also, wizards must prepare spells, so even if you know 5000 level 1 spells, you will only be able to prepare a certain number of them (the max is 5). Sorcerors can cast all the spells they know at once, however.

This is false. You can inscribe a scroll at any level, but it will not show up in your spell listing or let you memorize it (to be able to cast it) until you reach the level where that spell level is available. One thing I did with my wiz was to buy and scribe scrolls several levels in advance (as i could afford) in order to know which spells to take for my level ups because they were not available on vendors, as i didnt have the nifty list in the post above

That's wrong. You can inscribe spells at a higher level, you just can't cast them (or even see you have them inscribed) but you will see them as soon as you level up.

Many people buy one of each scroll that is available before levelling up so they can clearly see which spells have to be selected by a wiz during the level up process and are not available by scroll purchase.

To the OP, on a more general note, sorc don't need to inscribe spells, they pick what they want while levelling up and if they later want they can change 1 spell every 3 days for a fee.
