Default Wisdom Teeth coming out, any advice?

I think my wisdom teeth are going to be forcfully removed from my skull soon. I go in for Xrays monday. My dang jaw has been sore near the hing in my jaw. Who woulda thought I would need them taken out at 34yrs old. I guess it took me longer to wisen up thne the average person.

Any rate, what kind of pain am I going to expect from this procedure? Besides having no insurance the financial pains are the only ones I know for sure. I heard some people say they knock you out, some say they just dope you up good. I am a wuss bag and am allergic to pain so any idea of what to expect would be nice.

    Thanks

I had mine taken out a couple years ago, at around 32... I really didn't have any pain at all. In fact, the loss of the existing pain more than made up for any residual pain from the surgery.

I'll take a crack at this one!

It's definitely a different experience for everyone, but I'll let you know about mine.

I had something done to me called conscious sedation, where you're technically awake, although I believe very drugged out, and you don't remember anything. So you avoid the surgical pain that way. I think there was some kind of numbing that went on as well, because I didn't feel pain (or anything, including the saliva pouring down my chin) for a few hours. When it wears off, it hurts, but they'll give you some pain meds, and you should take them.

It's definitely an uncomfortable experience, and you should have lots of soft jello-y foods available to consume. I was 18 at the time, and went on a 30 mile bike ride three days later, so you'll live.

    Good luck!

Had it done when I was 15, and I just met with an oral surgeon (on another matter, work related not teeth related) and asked for ya.

They may or may not put you out, depending on the complexity of the procedure. If there are multiple teeth being removed, and they need to make incisions (for example if they are growing sideways) in your gums rather than break or pull the teeth straight out, you have a better chance of being put under.

Since you have no insurance, and getting put under is more costly than getting doped up, that may play into things. I can't speak to that since I live in Canada, home of public health care

When you are done, it will feel very strange in your mouth, as there will be a lot of things missing that you have been used to being there. Also, you will feel some pain for a few weeks, especially if you accidentally chew on something back there while you are eating. When I got mine done I actually ate mostly meat for the first week because you chew that stuff up front in your mouth, whereas that healthy salad gets ground up at the back, which will be very tender.

Don't worry, barring an infection and/or surgical butchery, you should be back to almost normal in a week or so, and in a month you won't even think about it anymore.

They will probably give you a lecture about something called 'dry socket', and to avoid smoking, drinking with a straw, or anything that causes you to suck (insert joke here). LISTEN TO THEM. I made the mistake of smoking the day after getting a tooth removed two years ago (because what does a dentist know) and developed dry socket, and it freaking hurts, about a thousand times worse than the actual dental procedure. It won't kill you, but it will make you seriously think about shooting yourself in the head to end the pain.

I am 38 and just had mine done last year.

I had local anethesia and had it done while completely conscious. I did not want to be put under, although it was an option. If you are worried about it at all, they offer sedation dentistry where you are put asleep.

I had a very good dentist that had each tooh pulled in a few short seconds. Was mostly pressure I felt, was no real pain. But as the tooth was cracked and pulled that was a popping sound didn't like to hear. Pain was not to bad, they give you a big bottle of vicodin. I had a lot more pain from the tooh problem than the removal, so it turned out to be a relief. Make sure you have a lot of the right kind of foods, soft. I lived on jello/icecream/yogurts/etc for a few days.

Depends on if they are impacted or not.

Mine just died and the removal was simple. Local shot and removed in a matter of seconds. They did each side, one week apart. I was eating the same day, but chewing on the other side. Very pain free.

MY wife's were impacted. She needed to have surgery and was in a lot of pain for a week or so. She had to have a liquid diet for a few days.

If you are just going to an oral surgeon as an out patient, it shouldn't be too bad.

I was put under General Anesthesia when I had a four of mine removed so I felt no pain during the procedure.

Apart from some general goofiness in my behavior while I was coming out of it in the recovery room, I was fine afterward as long as I took my pain medication.

My wisdom teeth were growing in at an angle and pushing against my adult teeth. Because of the angle they had to be chiseled out, rather than pulled. My procedure was about as painful as it gets regarding wisdom teeth removal. And while unpleasant it isn't anything to worrying about.

Just make sure you have someone to drive you home and have plenty of soft foods to eat for a week or so. A meal replacement drink like Met-RX wouldn't be a bad idea. And keep those sockets clean! (They will give you a tool to clean them with) You really dont want an infection after surgury.

VERY TRUE, try smoking just after.... dry socket isnt all that bad and whats really cool is you will be able to store bits of food in the holes that will be left in your gums....you think your toothbrush smells bad wait until you re chew some week old foodstuffs......awesome.

The last time I was at the dentist they showed me the Xrays then and they were almost horizontal it looked like, under my rear molars. I am hoping they dont have to remove my rear teeth just to get these things out. Its got my jaw kinda numb right now. I also read about that dry socket on the internet a couple nights ago. I dont smoke and I didnt do any time on brokeback mountain (inserted bad joke there see it).

Well thanks again guys, and Gunga hehe

Unless that forum is full of relatively older folks who have likely gone thru the experience already.

If the work needs to be done, find a dentist you can trust and get it done. Some of us had really bad early experiences with dentists, and blew off regular check-ups for far too long... Now am trying to catch up $1000-2000 at a time to avoid the pull-em-all alternative.

The dentist makes the difference. My current one has no problem supplying Nitrous to help you relax, and has DVD players on the ceiling above the chair.

Sounds like the position mine are in. In my case, I opted to not have them removed. The roots ran deep into the nerves of my jaw, and they gave me a 50/50 of experiencing some permanent facial paralysis if the nerves got damaged. So in the years since, the pressure has smashed teeth together, and cracked a few.... Hindsight being what it is, I shoulda taken the roll.

get knocked out, the procedure is brutal, even if doped up I just wouldn't want to know what was going on.

When I had mine removed(Just the two lower ones, fortunately), they gave me some really nice gas for ten minutes or so. It didn't knock me out, but I was feeling REALLY good by the time they turned it off. After that, they stuck an IV drip in my arm, and everything went dark for awhile. Next thing I knew, they were wheeling me out to the car. I didn't even know anything had happened. Of course, I don't remember much else after that either, since I was a little out of it. Other than a little soreness, I didn't feel any real pain, and the swelling was gone in a few days. In terms of medical procedures, this is about the least stressful(Physically and mentally) you can get.

Had 3 erupted (ie exposed not compacted) wisdom teeth removed... Nitrous Oxide and Novacaine FTW at age 34. (cheapest way, if they are exposed)... I had them removed just for the sake of dental hygiene.

Yes I did call the dentist a SOB during the procedure.
In hindsight it wasnt very painful, it's just that people aren't used to having teeth yanked outta their mouth while they are pretty much conscious, and no you don't get to inhale N2O like at the dead show. They give you just enough to get a buzz.

Took 15 minutes and I drove home afterward.
Went to the drugstore and got my opiates...
Played DDO for the rest of the day.

There was a complication in my case, the first tooth, the one I called him a SOB over... he broke some slivers of my jaw born and there was slivers of bone sticking outta my gum. I had to go back twice to get all that broken bone removed. I think it only happened because I live in kentucky and my dental surgeon was a slacked jaw yokel.
