Last I heard it wasn't a direct damage spell, and while not one I use a lot I would be sure SR would work against it. Anyone want to confirm?

it is a direct damage spell. Damage directly to your level. Its the same with contagion and poison. Stat damage, level damage, hp damge.. same thing.

Been a while since I was on my sorc though. Dont know if theyve changed anything but poison and contagion are still SR-less.

Probably not...But pounding on any paladin or any good melee for that matter only makes the lightning strike guard proc faster...go ahead and give it a wail...or better yet stick to greater shout the 40 times it takes to cast it to actually kill someone.

You have 6 bards... each of them can be casting greater shout. I highly doubt that it would take 40 casts of greater shout to kill a player character unless those pallys are all wearing something that gives them 30/sonic.. I think you're forgetting that players do not have the inflated HP that monsters have. Obviously you can insert whatever damage spell you want here due to UMD, I was just giving a bard spell as an example. Also sonic resist is something most players dont bother wearing at all times given the low frequency of encountering sonic damage compared to the other types.

I mean seriously.. all 6 bards fascinating at the same time followed by each of them walking up and casting an extended irresistable dance followed by whatever damage spells or scrolls or wands they have and can use. It doesnt take a genius.

Went and checked spell on my Wiz, says SR is effective against it. There is a difference between hp damage and stat/poison damage effects.

Ok logged back on, bought a heap of scrolls and went into the vale on my sorc (was going to put this off until tomorrow but...)

Results:
Fiendish trolls, used 3 scrolls no SR roll appeared and each was drained. So I was about to log and come back here and appologise publicly for doubting you. Then I thought since I had gone to the trouble of logging back in I would go a bit further, the invisible lion (5am here and cant remember what they are called) I used a scroll, again no roll but got the SR effect and it bounced, tried again, same, so I just FOD and moved on, against devils same bounce, against Fiendish Sorcs bounced. So what I am trying to say, albiet a bit incoheriently is that SR does work against it.

I would say the lack of a SR roll being displayed may be due to the fact it is a scroll (or just my need to sleep).

Wrong. None of Enervation, Contagion, or Poison is a damage spell, or has ever been. However, Contagion is immune to SR for other reasons (and not sensible reasons).

The usual outcome of bard vs paladin is:
1. Fascinate
2. Greater Dispel
3. Enervate
4. Dance
5. Enervate
6. Stone
7. Dreamsplitter
8. Logout
