I'd like to post my feelings here about how this trade went down, with hopes that it might help some other people have a positive experience when trading on this forum .
If you read the posts above, some of you may feel that hannika and I had a done deal. I don't feel that way. I do a lot of negotiating in my business, and a deal exists when two parties agree to material terms. This post was very clear...your cha tome for my con tome. If you come to my table wanting my cha tome without a con tome, there is no deal.
On Friday afternoon, I put this post up, got a quick response from hannika saying she could maybe trade her tome to some guy for his cha tome. I told her to make it happen, truly hoping that she could, but not expecting anything from it. Then I left for the weekend. Then Drider posted that he would trade with her, and she said ok, and then he told me not to screw her, and I didn't respond. You know why I didn't reaspond? I left for the weekend. I never made a commitment to Drider, ab, or anyone else in this post. To me, a commitment would have sounded something like "This trade has been made. I am trading my tome to ab for her tome when she gets it from Drider". I never said that. No deal.
What hapened to the tome? As soon as I logged into DDO Friday night, I mentioned in guild chat that I had a tome up on the forum. A guildie said he had a cha tome and needed the con tome, and, since I was not commited to anyone, I made the trade. Done deal in 1 min. Nice.
I find out later that night that ab is ready to make the trade, and we try communicating via tells while I'm cleric'ing in the shroud. Apparently, I wasn't responding quickly enough so she logged before I could elequently break the news that I traded the tome to someone who had a con tome in hand.
The next day, when I logged in, I began getting some flack from my guildies about the trade, and that ab was upset. She was talking to friends of hers that were in my guild, and my guildies felt that she was right and I should have made the trade with her. I joined a shroud that she was in and she became very vocal about how she felt about what went down. I certainly didn't mean any disrespect to ab, and didn't wish to create stress in anyone's life, especially mine, so I offered ab a +2 int tome for the trouble that she went through. This made ab happy, and she took back all the negative things she told people about me. Great. I just traded a +2 Con tome and a +2 Int tome for a +2 Cha tome...not exactly what I originally posted here, now is it?
If you're making a trade here on the forums, be very, very clear about the terms of the trade. Don't expect someone to commit an item they're posting to you if you don't have what they are looking for. Don't make side trades to acquire the item that the Poster is looking for if they haven't commited their item to you. And definately, don't ever take any wooden nickels.
