    Default Questions on my mind....

Some of this information is available somewhere I'm sure but I just haven't had the time to look....

    1. When will A Memory of Light and the conclusion of the Wheel of Time series Robert Jordan aka James Oliver Rigney be completed?
    2. When will A Dance With Dragons George R. R. Martin finally be finished?
    3. What will Terry Goodkind's next book (or series!) be about now that he has finished the Sword of Truth series?
    4. When will Dark Wraith of Shannara Terry Brooks be released?
    5. When will Fearless Fourteen Janet Evanovich be released?
    6. Why does Mickey Zucker Reichert write and publish soooo slowly?
    7. When will the final Dune book be released by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson?
    8. Will they get the Landover Terry Brooks movie made and released within the year?
    9. How many more Xanth novels will Piers Anthony write, anyway?
    10. Does anyone have a really good -new- author to suggest to me (please no suggestions of Salvatore and other well knowns)?

don't have the info on the other questions (although i suspect by now that those xanth books are really written by a room full of monkeys)...

    but...

check your local library. many have online book clubs that send you a weekly sampling. each day you get a couple of pages so that over the course of a work week you get the first chapter or so of the book. the idea is you get to get a good feel for whether you'd be into the book or not. you can sign up for various genres. it is also free. and your library carries the books in stock so if you want to read it you don't have to buy the book. i started this with one genre and now subscribe to 3... it's a little addicting. i find it's a great way to get exposed to new books, new authors, and especially ones i'd never even pick up on my own.

[edit] i noticed after the fact your location in japan... not sure how the library system is there, but this is all done on-line so any US library website should get you started.

He's not new, but Richard A. Knaak wrote what is in my opinion the best fantasy novel, The Legend of Huma.

Martin was hoping for 2007, but is now shooting for this year. Release is hopefully going to be this year as well.

    oh oh i agree

    i love that book

i can't say it's the best fantasy novel though, but it's definitely one of my favourite ones

i also just read the minotaur wars trilogy by him, which was cool because it was about minotaurs and wars.

i would recommend the dark disciple trilogy by margaret wies (well the first two that are out) (hey does anyone know when the third comes out?) i liek that one because it's very clash of the titans-ish in that it's about gods fighting amongst themselves and using humans as their pawns

If you have not yet read these:

    Robin Hobb

    Dave Duncan

    Morgan Howell

    Carol O'Connell

    Barry Eisler

    Michael Connelly

    Linda Fairstein

    Lawrence Block

I recommend Hobb and Duncan first. You will be enthralled.

If I wasn't in Japan, the library would definitely be my first choice. Unfortunately the US military base I'm at doesn't have the best library. I've been here 4 years and exhausted their supply of books a long time ago but still check from time to time to see if there is anything new.

As it is, I've been using Amazon to do the same, but of late all the authors they suggest to me are ones I already have everything they wrote, or was not impressed.

Thank you, will try that one.

EDIT: I didn't even know the name of the authors, but I have read all the Dragonlance books. I wasn't impressed by the "game" books (Warcraft, Diablo, Age of Conan, etc.). Personally I like an author who can come up with his/her own world and not build off someone else's (acceptable only when completing a series by an author who has abruptly passed on while writing a series, IMO). On to the next suggestions....

I loved them when I was younger, and now I read them to my daughter.

Yes I know that. However I also know that his wife has been working on having his last book completed and published, as all the ideas and notes for it were readily available. I was just curious as to when and if she had even selected an author to do the writing.

Thank you. I'd heard Martin would release in 2007 but 2007 came and went. Will read the news article from RJ's site.

Have everything by Margaret Weis, but thank you for the suggestion.

    My favorite authors are
    Mercedes Lackey
    Anne McCaffrey
    Elizabeth Moon
    CE Murphy

If you haven't read Elizabeth Moon, I highly recommend her. Her Sci Fic is some the of best. I'm really enjoying her Vatta Trading Series - she reminds me a lot of CJ Cherryh. CE Murphy is more Fantasy/Occult - but her main character is constantly out of control of live and in complete denial - I love it.

In addition to getting the books in hardback which can be expensive I have an account at Fictionwise.com and download my choices into a handheld (pocketpc) they can also be read on the computer.

    Jules

Ladies - Mediclady, Elspyth, Warchantress, Bittt, Julez, LilBitt, Bucketoboltz, Skitty, Kerro, Wyntermoon, Kethrey, Kethree, Selany, Gypsie, Cassyopeya, Tinkerbelle, Dyanya, PallasAthene

Try and find something by Caitlin R. Kiernan; I read 'Daughter of Hounds' last year and it blew me away. I'm not sure if it's an adequate representation of all her work or not, but that one at least was a great addition to modern fantasy.

Just finished the first three books in The Saxon Chronicles by Bernard Cromwell. It is really good and the fourth book comes out in a week or so.

    I think they were

    The Last Kingdom
    The Pale Horseman
    Lords of the North
