Unhappy with random Pumpkin Heads

I must express my displeasure with the new Pumpkin and Skull heads.

One of the founding principles of this game is that one player cannot interact with another player without their permission. I am very disappointed that some random person can walk over to my avatar and turn my head into a pumpkin.

I shouldn't need to spend my Turbine Points on some Party-****er item in order to prevent this from happening.

So call me a stick in the mud if you wish but I think this whole thing is silly. I don't log on to DDO to have this kind of interaction with others. If I wanted this kind of garbage I'd play WoW and get bombarded by Mowhawk grenades.

I can say that I wish the Pumpkins were self-applicable. I'd walk around with one all the time if they were.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates this idea. I'm yet to be hit by one so unsure if changing you helm will remove it or not.

But us having to buy a potion to stop it happening? Really, that was like a kick in the guts. If you needed anymore proof that Turbine could care less about the player and more about the money, there it is.

kormor's belt, barkskin, stoneskin, camoflage...

there are alot of 'interactions' that other players can do to you while sitting in the tavern. I personally find a random barkskin much more of a nuissance than a 10-minute pumpkin or skull head. at least they are somewhat amusing and festive for a holiday thats supposed to be fun.

That being said, one should have the option to turn it off if they find it not fun.

1- you didn't need to spend TP for that item, you could have traded motes for it - or simply turned your helmet off.

I saw someone toss a pumpkin grenade on a group of about forty players crowded around the bar getting buffs, it was great. POOF! Pumpkin head family reunion!

I like them, and think they're pretty cool/fun.
However, they should be removed upon logout instead of being a persistent timer - just for those who don't care for the effect.


And OP - you can buy a Potion of the Party Po0per with Motes instead of from the Store, if you are so inclined.

At least they are better than the original sun flask effect, lol.

Eh, you're still better than my friend who thinks the whole thing is stupid, the raid is no fun (he is 100% anti-raid), and the items are garbage. Maybe I need to give him a pumpkin head...

I really wish I was joking about that too.


It's Halloween, which is supposed to be a fun holiday, so get in the spirit and kill some undead!

I think I'm gonna get some of the pumpkin head potions and save them to throw out on occasion.

I think the only negative is that it costs resources to turn yourself back, that's not a good thing in my eyes.

Part of the problem is in the mechanic by which you "apply" the pumpkin heads. I tried to hit my teammates several times by "aiming at their heads". Four shots later - I realized that it was a fireball and had to aim at their feet. I probably hit multiple people behind them unintentionally.

A 10 minute graphic change is going to bother you that much? Really? Lots of other phrases come to mind but I think I'm going to ask "who took the jam out of your doughnut?".

well i did find a way to remove it, it just involves going in a quest area, cast dispel magic or break enchantment and it should be gone.

Did you not notice the timer? Are you kidding there is no requirement to spend points to end it. None at all.

So it does not cost resources to end. Not 1. If you cant stand a few minutes with a pumpkin on your head in an MMO, i would fear to encounter your lack of patients in real life.

You might want to loosen the tinfoil a bit. You do not actually have to use TP, nor is it permanent. Considering how much more interaction there was this update with the devs proves just how wrong you are.

OTHER steps to get rid of the Pumpkin Head that do not include TP:

1) Wait for the timer to run out.
2) Place your thumb over your character's head for while playing. Alternatively, place a small piece of non-transparent tape over your character's head on the screen. Since their head will relatively always stay in the centre of the screen, moving the tape is not necessary.
3) Ignore it. Pixels aren't worth fussing over. Everytime you get mad, you lose 2 minutes of your lifespan.
4) Go afk or use the pumpkin heads as a sign that you need to take a break from the game.
5) Bang head on wall until vision is blurry so pumpkin head will not be visible.

I love the pumpkin heads. I wish more people would spend their motes on the grenades so everyone could wear one.

Pumpkins are cool... what other vegetable can you make artwork, pies, roasted seeds, spices, and other cool stuff out of? I dont see Broccoli getting it done.

I don't quite like store-only stuff, but I like the idea of pumpkins as actual hats.
Skulls didn't quite work for me; a bit too large, almost like papier mache masks from el Dia de los Muertos...

Basically, I like the idea of devs testing new ways to customise char appearance.
Granted, it's taking a while as they are testing the different bits separately.
But I can see the potential beyond the prank effect.

We had a guy drop a skull mask bomb on the Shroud party, at the shrine just before part 5. Since we were all about to die anyway, it seemed fitting and got quite a laugh.

I have ALWAYS thought that about any buffs. Why not have a click option up on the buff status icon that says "Remove effect." Technically, you should be able to make a saving throw against someone casting Haste or Stoneskin on you. That may not be feasible to prompt for permission for every buff you get. But, it seems like it wouldn't be terribly difficult to add a buff remove option in case you are RPing, or just annoyed with the bubble head, pumpkin, or whatever.

I got one of those the moment i logged and it wasn't fun! I didn't like it! Maybe i would have on other occasions, but it wasn't the case. And to remove it i would have to spend TPs or wait in a corner?!..

It's irrelevant what others think it's fun when they are stepping on your toes... And worse, forcing you spend TPs to remove the thing? Yet another FAIL by Turbine! At least being able to remove the buff by some other means...

OP...really you should have played for years like so many of these folks have added... Yeah really some of the noobs here actaually posted that.....shame they don't know who you are....or the fact you been playing since day one.

I enjoyed the festivities last night until ya know it started costing items and went all buggy.....once again Turbine tests it's buggy code out on the masses. I know they frustrated the crud out of players last night. I got lucky and succeeded on the new pseudo raid bs. But a lot of folks put in the time only to be bugged and kicked.

As for the pumpkin heads/skulls....this should be limited to the festival arrea in the graveyard. No reason for to effect others in the game. I wonder if Turbine considered that it might be offensive to some players? You realize Halloween in not a world wide holiday...and some people consider it quite offensive. Really Turbine is your view of the world so small that you think only your holidays and pagean holidays are to be forced on all.....really?


Again doesn't bother me...but if I wansnt in a festive holiday mood......why force everyone to be a party.....and no it is not this way with the festivus or bunny holidays or even the ice games. You can either take part or obstaine but it is not a forced inclusion.

My biggest complaint is that Turbine should get it's shiat fixed before wasting my time on it.

The problem is that not everyone has fun in the same way or for the same reason. Although it is just a temporary change it is still not right that one player has to endure something that interfeares with their enjoyment of the game because of another player. The duration of the effect is irrelivent, what matters is that a player that does not like it has NO alternative except waste resources (TP or Motes being collected to get / upgrade the special items).

I agree, we should all have fun playing this game, but one players fun is no more or less important than anothers and their should be a NON-RESOURCE way to opt out if you do not find this behaviour fun. People say liten up it's just a little fun, but yet I see the same people b***hing and moaning about Player X who zerged through a quest. Well, some people like zerging, it is how they have fun, so liten-up right?

I LOVE the pumpkin heads and any cool thing to give the game something new and different, but respect everyone's right to their opinion.

My beef is that after trading my precious motes, my lowbie wiz has to fire off almost a dozen to hit anything:eek:

Next the fighter tried -- same thing. We were all lined up waiting for some cool new heads and...miss...miss...miss...drat, gotta kill more skellies.

I think there ought to be a UI opt out as well. Or let the party poo.per potions be free. I didn't get hit with them at all because I thought the event was kinda lame and I was busy questing on my double TR last night so it didn't really affect me. But I can see where the OP is coming from. He doesn't like it. It isn't anyone's place to tell him to 'lighten up'.

His like and dislikes are entireley up to him. His idea of whats cool or funny or whatever differ from everyone else's. Some people laugh at people who hurt themselves in videos on youtube. Some people post up pictures from tragedies and caption them to try to make them funny. Some people find the humor some people thing they're being arseholes. Everyone is different and no one has the right to tell someone else that their point of view or opinion is wrong.

I don't think the pumpkin heads go nearly far enough, but there are existing game mechanisms that can allow a player to fully get into the spirit of the holiday. One white skull? Kind of lame. But if you run ahead in the mission, you can give a red skull to the entire party. When people whine, well who cares. They are obviously not in the right spirit. After a few minutes red skulling, they will get into some form of spirit!

Nothing says halloween like death. Through strategic use of debuffs, you can assure the rest of the party will die. My favorite is a lesser globe of invulnerability on the tanks in the last room of the Reavers Kobald run. Fun for the entire party! (except for the dead). The best part is that the potion of the party ****er does nothing to discourage these forms of celebration of the holliday!!!

This holliday, put the trick back in trick or treat!

You would indeed encounter my severe lack of "patients" because I am not a doctor, shrink, dentist of chiropractor. But I would argue that a lack of patients might lead to a longer life, not a heart attack as having observed patients in waiting rooms, they can be a hassle! :D

I'm just yanking your chain, homonyms trip me up sometimes too!

As to your points...I'm tired of repeating myself. I've made it as clear as I can what my issues with this are but at the end of the day it is what it is. Others have as well. I was just trying to raise awareness to what I perceive as an issue. People either grasp it or they don't.

But seriously, I designed the back of my toon's head to be the most beautiful thing in the universe, and to be forced to NOT look at it for 10 minutes is worse than waterboarding! I DEMAND that Turbine base every single decision they make on the game on what I want, with no regard to what they, the developers, would enjoy, or any other player in the game.

This is a travesty of the highest order, and I demand satisfaction... In fact, I think that because of this OBVIOUS "back of my head" nerf, that every player should be given a heart of wood so they can respec to a toon that works better with a pumpkin head!

What we have here is more of your typical community vote type situations.

From what I can tell, this community is saying lighten up, pumpkin head.

Heck turbine can save tons on customer support, gm/player interaction, and dev feedback...

New default reply to everything! "Awww lighten up dude! it's just for fun!"

That's like referencing a famous serial killer's prominent murders and then tacking onto the end of it a quote from him, "Awww lighten up dude! It's just for fun!"

By this I do not mean pulling loot and selling it in party is the same as going on a real life killing spree. I mean that your examples (just like mine) bear little to no similarity to the simple and arguably harmless annoyance of a pumpkin head.

They stem from the same sociopathic point of view.

That being it's fun/funny for you. so what other people think about the situation doesn't matter.

That's the point though. It may be simple, it may be hamless, but it is annoying to some people. That means can be used to greif them etc... Why should people be required to be subjected to the anoyance. They play the game to have fun, just like everyone else does, they just have a different definition of what is or is not fun.

The main point here is that Turbin dropped the ball by not giving a way to opt out that doesn't cost the players any resources.

Bad form Turbine bad form.....

F the pumpkin heads... I have enough of those in my guild already...

Ummm, barkskin, stoneskin, camouflage? Personally, I love the pumpkin head, especially on my WF. I looked back after being afk for a second and was like "\/\/TF?, AWESOME! I AM THE GREAT AND POWERFUL PUMPKIN KING, TREMBLE YE MORTALS BEFORE MY SPOOKY WRATH! I want this head forevers." And seriously, there are plenty of things that have been in the game a looong time that can change your appearance against your will and until there's a checkbox that let's you hide other players buff effects on you they'll always be there. I dunno about everyone else but I consider being camo'd worse than a silly head by a mile. Hell, I'd walk around with a giant dong for a head before I'd willingly be camo'd, especially on a saturday morning... all that slowly pattern shifting translucence.... hurf.

...bah, who am I kidding, if it was available I'd walk around with the giant dong for a head just for the helluvit and probably make a base purple wf wiz to do it "FEAR THE STICKY WRATH OF THE PURPLE HEADED WARRIOR!" and then just cast web in every quest.

+1 This is the right attitude! I didn't even think about throwing pumpkins myself but these threads really makes me to wait for this event even more just to be able throw some heads. Hopefully hitting you(might end up hitting myself). :)

Crystal Head looks cool. Sadly can't get it in this country. Drink one for me! :)

I really feel bad for the poor slugs at Turbine who program cool **** for months on end only to have the most innane little details that make the event that much cooler thrown in their faces.

Shame on you for complaining about such a cool temporary effect. -1 forever.

i'm glad that the people getting gouged by buying the party po.oper pots are people that have absolutely no sense of humor, or tolerance.

Nothing wrong with the event...but the "cure" should have been 1tp so that people could easily opt out. I can't imagine anyone complaining about spending 1cent to protect themself if bothered.

I think it'd be reasonable to have the effect ONLY in the graveyard, and ONLY while the event is running.

In fact, it should be mandatory to wear a pumpkin head, make it so you can't damage those undead otherwise.

People get annoyed from stupid things. My dog barked twice during a quest while I had my mic on and I received a tell afterwards telling me I was squelched because of that. Just because it annoys a small minority doesn't mean the fun should be taken from everyone.

Okay so you want it to be free to get party ****er potions? You don't think it is fair to have to use your motes or tp in order to protect yourself from evil pumpkin throwers? Have you tried looking at this from the other side. Do you know how annoying it would be if everyone I tried to make wear a stupid skull head was able to take it off right away? I spent good tp/motes for those pumpkins and skulls too.

It could be but it makes a lot less sense. It can be added to any argument, your point being? The reason it works here is no permanent damage is being done whatsoever. Unless people are being emotionally traumatized by having a pumpkin head for 12 minutes.

Noone is asking to have anything taken away from those who have no problem with it. All that is being asked for is a non-resource method to opt out for those that don't find it "fun". In point of fact I don't have an issue with it, but I see where others might and I truly believe that they have a right not to have to put up with it.

As evidenced by this thread alone, many people would still be viable targets. But to answer the underlining question, yes I think it would be fair. If you were affeting your own character only then we would have NO basis for complaint, but you are not. You are specifically performing an act with reprocussions on anothers play reguardless of their feelings on the matter. In polite society this is bad form.

So noone finds it odd that sneak-h*mping is a bannable offense- cuz it's griefing other ppl.

My biggest complaint with it is that I think it's freezing my computer. Twice last night, my computer completely froze while I was playing DDO. I've never had that happen before. In the past, I've lost connection with the server, had DDO freeze but I could still alt-tab out to the desktop, had DDO spontaneously shut down, etc. But last night was the first time I've ever seen my computer completely freeze up while playing DDO. Couldn't alt-tab, ctrl-alt-del didn't respond, nothing. Had to force a hard reboot to get the computer working again. And when I logged back in to DDO, my character had a new pumpkin head both times. Haven't done enough testing to definitively confirm that the pumpkin head is the cause, but it's looking pretty suspicious to me. I might not have a choice but to take a break from DDO if other people can freeze up my computer at will.

And it could be a lot worse. In LOTRO, they made items that cause other players do emotes which stop them in their tracks.

My opinion is that it's an excessively fussy complaint and does not warrant the attention it's already received let alone a dev response.

Take a look around you and see what everyone else thinks...lots of people having fun with pumpkin and skull heads out there.

Maybe you should try having fun.
