Wehd. I do have an hour to an hour and a half commute one-way, but it's partially my fault, due to wanting to own a home, preferring less urban living, and not being a fan of shoebox+no pahking suburbs. I think there's a correlation here:Quote:

How much does travel cost inside US?
I am thinking about people going to conventions or meetings or hiking or something like that.
Are there real options for travel (car, bus, train, plane) or is one simply most optimal for each trip?
For my car gasoline cost like 13 € for 100 miles, one hotel night with breakfast buffet costs something like 120-190 € /night for normal room (2 persons, and sometimes including use of saunas and swimmingpool), coffee break averages maybe 10 € for two and meal in a brand restaurant for two is maybe 30-40 €. (Meal in a rare good restaurant costs about 50€ /head, maybe double with some more drinks.)
Train ticket can be a bit cheaper than gas for one person, so if there are two persons, car is by far cheaper.

The major downside to travel around the US is the sub-par public transport as compared to Europe. (My experience was mostly around the UK in the 80s.)
Inter-city buses are cheapest, but that's not saying much when the main alternative are trains. Trains currently cost almost as much as airline tickets, and can take 1-3 days to get to a destination. Plus, there are fewer destinations available to trains every year.
I'm partial to driving and making my own schedule, so travel by car is my preferred mode.
