that other people won't know you've got lots of green boxes unless you show them? :)

After reading the whole thread (what can I say, I had some free time :P) I came to a few conclusions.
First of all, the rep system isn't absolutely wrong or evil. Changing it, removing it or leaving it as is won't change the community much, or at all, in my opinion.
The fact that it only allows high rep people to neg rep seems to indicate that "seniority" in the community (ie: good reputation with the community) would entitle them to have some sort of judgement over other people's posts. Maybe this was the initial objective, and to be honest it doesn't seem like a bad one, except it's near impossible to make it work perfectly. It's about the people - people are too different to have the same opinions and the same views about things. Or even the same views about the views about things :)
Personally, I often felt compelled or hesitant to post because of previously received reputation regardless of me believing it was deserved or not. So nowadays I just try to stick to the posts in which I can add information without much opinion.
There were some interesting suggestions to change the rep system into a "thank you" or a "this post was helpful" or even a "I like this post" kind of thing which in my opinion would be more meaningful.
So the mods are directing us to Report our own posts to appeal unwarranted neg rep. I guess they're looking to see just what abuses of neg rep people are talking about before they even think of changing anything? I guess it's time to turn the greenis back on and start looking through posts...
Dear Mods,
You know, even a message of "We like Rep the way it is, deal with it," would be more appreciated then just silence. Just a daily dose of something to think about, even if it's probably a wasted one.
Yours in perpetuity,
Mem.
I think they gave up caring when you gave up the protest and turned your green back on :D
Now Mem, you've been here long enough to know that the mods only talk about Broccoli or Bacon or other things unrelated to the game...or the forums.
Seriously, Turbine has a Customer Service problem. Starting about the time of the end of the WDA the policy for anything that even might be controversial seems to be "ignore it, the problem will eventually go away".
True, true....
Hmmmm....

Okay, so you don't want to talk about the cluster-fail that is the Rep system. I get it. It's not a comfortable discussion for you guys to have, I guess.

So just kill it. Wash it away.

If the Mods can't be bothered to deal with the problems with it, then it's better to just call it a failed effort then to continue it a moment more.

Maybe that will snag some notice.
Just decided to look at some of the neg rep I got for stupid reasons - that or some people are stalking posts to neg rep them.
The fact that it is anonymous just makes the whole thing puerile and a high school level of 'behind the back gossiping'.
So fix it, or kill it.
+1
I 'went Grey' when I started using these forums last August.

Neither can I determine how you would report someone is abusing the system given it's an anonymous process...
I don't need a green bar to advise who is to be respected and adds value to playing the game or as an information source but if I did and I was a casual forum user it would be hard to determine the posters who know the game engine; tactics; builds and stats amongst all the others who have accumulated lol points over time or who are popular with a clique.
Forum members who do hand out reputation will have different thresholds too - some will +1 as many times as they can and others will be very sparing. Likewise with negative reputation.
This is just my opinion, but no - it does not work as a recognition tool nor as a way of weeding out negative posts. The moderated status was not automatically effected and the poster who generated a mass of negative reputation has been completely removed from the forums manually.
Not really 'working as intended' it would seem so moderators may have some discussions about addressing this, but hopefully it is low, low priority because it does little to enhance the forums and is not of any relevance to the game.
It is, however a distraction for some and evokes more attention than I'm sure was planned, either by Turbine or those who use the system so perhaps removal would be best all round.
I'd give a choice:
Either, explain what practical purpose the rep system has,
Or, remove it completely.
There was no broccoli in that post Memnir... of course it will get no notice. You have to post, perhaps, some bacolli... maybe THAT will garner some looks!
Clay what happened to all your reps?

The rep system was designed to illustrate contributions to the community, but that does not exhonerate someone over 5 years of posting with a large post count and multiple contributions. The rep system was designed to weed out bad contributions and put individuals on notice. Yet someone can gain 5,000+ rep through positive contributions over 5 years and then be banned. But [I'm] not discussing it as that's against the CoC/EULA deal.
And now you can covertly farm rep and become "trustworthy" or better with only 12 posts.
The contributions over time and reputation gained mean nothing.
Kill the rep system.
Memnir, if you want to post a thread about killing the rep system, you might want to disable your rep bar so you don't look like a hypocrite.
Just a suggestion.
Tip: You can +rep someone that has it turned off. You can also -rep someone with it turned off. You just don't get to view their mini-bar to see if the hotel has it stocked or if it's bone dry.
If you were going for sarcasm with that post, it was off-the-mark without the
