The kobolds don't spawn until you talk to the NPC. If the 15% XP from breakables is of any value to you breaking them ahead of talking is totally safe. You can then retreat to hiding at the entrance after starting the timer.

Another tip: Cash in your patron favor for rewards: HPs, storage space, tree unlocks, skills etc
