Hi guys,
trying to figure out if vorpal strikes even matters at end game. I've take it every life, but i am not even sure its worth it.
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Nico

Probably not? For max deeps, yes. For quality of life, no.
Monk epic feats are definitely gonna include Overwhelming Crit (effectively 5% more damage) and Improved Martial Arts (probably about the same). The last two could be any of Vorpal Strikes, Blinding Speed, Epic DR, Epic Will/Fortitude/Reflexes. Blinding Speed seems worthwhile, as there aren't any great Monk speed items
Vorpal Strikes' slashing DR bypass seems lackluster to me, but then I haven't looked extensively at boss DRs. The vorpal is ok since there aren't any other named handwraps with that effect, but it's still an average of 5 non-scaling damage per hit, which is the same base effect as its +0.5[W] but doesn't hold up well at endgame.
The other four abilities are all defensive, so that entirely depends on your experiences at cap. I'm in the camp of "soulstones do zero dps", but I've never had the best gear so I don't suffer the same diminishing returns as leet players.
I haven't looked at feats for a pure monk recently - AFAIK it's TWFx3, Whirlwind, IC: Bludg, Precision, Stunning Fist. I honestly can't imagine what else would be helpful, but you could always take one of these as an epic feat. Completionist, maybe?
Vorpal strikes has been bugged for years. It provides the slashing bypass, but no vorpal effect with wraps. It does work if you are truly unarmed (no weapons equipped), for what that's worth.
Thanks guys. I have been trying to replace my speed item and thought I could simply swap out vorpal for blinding speed. I am lacking in MRR, and wanted to craft something for my feet since I am using flightfoot greeves and I'm not overlay concerned with FOM since can use a spell for this. If I swap out the flightfoot greeves, I could craft some slavers boots with sheltering among other things.
A lot of these decisions are going to depend on the content you run. I like the greeves as my fom cant be dispelled. I personally don't like using a feat on speed, I usually would rather use feats for things I cant use gear for. You also get +19 armor class also non dispellable, and a boost to reflex. My reflex is my lowest save so I like that as well. As for feats, I would look at pl monk/rogue, deflect arrows, or completionist if you don't have some of those already. Either way non of the options you are considering are game breaking.
Yeah, I would hate to take that as a feat as well, but I would only be removing weapon focus bludeoning, which is a loss of +2 MP. I typically run mid-level Reaper (sharn/RL/etc).
Saves are as follows:
Fort: 79
Reflex: 98
Will: 100
AC: 201
removing flightfoot only reduces reflex by 4 (most of which comes back while I run reaper anyway)
Current setup includes:
legenray turncoat (which only has PRR, and no MRR)
legendary moonrise bracers
Legendary celestial ruby ring
Flightfoot greeves
Hammerfist
Radiant Ring of Taer Valaestas
Legendary Animated Rope
Legendary Mantle of Fury
CC trinket
Legendary Family Recruit Sigil
Legendary Umber Brim
Legendary Collective Sight
I run in ethereal plane and have 90ish hide for extra SA damage. I am just really missing MRR, unless I flip to the black opal bracers, but then I lose my greater reinforced fists.
I guess this all stems from MRR, and my lack of it. Is it really that necessary for a monk anyway given evation? I mean, with a max of 50 anyway, its not much.
does this info help?
Nico
I can easily get that +4 back anyway by doing a slavers shackjle with Resistance +14 (would add +2 over what I have) and Quality reflex. should net out.
I can also pick up sheltering, because my MRR is only 8 (unless I chuck on the Black Opal bracers.
Yeah wish they didn't do monks like that with the gear set up. Should just have 50 on the armor and be done with it. I have a defense augment slotted for +16, a few rare filigrees, and past lives that put me at 50. Unfortunately the last two raids they have released have lots of splash, unevadable magic damage, so if you are planning on running those, pumping the MRR is helpful. 50 is fine for normal and hard, more than that and you may want to look for ways to get it higher at least for those dungeons.
Yeah, i had on outfit of celestial and that was 49 sheltering. I didnt even notice it was just prr on the turncoat until i completely built my toon. The only way to get over 50 is with nystul set, but even with that i dont have anything to get that high anyway. I am in the tr game again after collecting all the sharn gear, so raids are pretty far in the future. Thanks for the tip on the new raids!
