DDO and windows 8

i didn't see a thread about this so figured i would post it but i know some of you will be upgrading here to windows 8 and while ddo needs framework 1.1 in order to run it is not compatible with windows 8 and u may run into issues being able to play the game. what i did to fix this was just opened the game downloader and repaired the game data and voila it worked. just thought i would put it out there for all of you that are thinking of upgrading to windows 8

I've used all 4 editions of Windows 8 (from dev -> release) and never had a problem with .net framework 1.1.

I did have an issue with patching about a year ago on a fresh install, but that seems to have been taken care of and no longer an issue.

What kinds of 1.1 issues are you seeing?

Was just saying that I needed 1.1 even tho I have 4 but I just put this post out there for those who do end up with a similar issue and this post isn't for tablets running win 8 but computers

For the record, having a specific version of the .NET framework doesn't imply you have previous versions installed. Microsoft did make a half-arsed attempt to bundle a few versions together (2.0 through 3.5), but most antiquated versions still must be installed separately. If you use enough applications from various times in the past 10 years, it's possible to have quite a few .NET versions installed.

So, working as intended as far as the operating system is concerned. Now, the fact that DDO still relies partially on an extremely old version of the framework is another issue entirely. It's been at least 5 years since I've seen anything else requiring it (porting to a newer framework is ridiculously easy for a developer, and nearly always beneficial for the user).

A friend of mine is new to the game.
I just recently talked him into trying it out and he's using his 'Other' laptop with Windows 8 on it.
We ran into an issue with .Net Framework installing. I told him to install 1.1 directly from the MKB and then let DDO update from 1.1 to 2.0 on it's own.
So far, so good. I'll update you guys as we cross hurdles.
So far I'm figuring the next one will be moving the Patch files as is suggested here.

Just made the pass to windows 8, had a ssd laying around which I kept for this occasion.

Installation and updating the video drivers was done in two hours, finding the right driver was why it took so long.

DDO downloading took some time. On prehand I've installed some .net version as mentioned that I would run into some problems other wise. Turns out a c++ package was needed as well, installed that as well. Some updates made to DDO by the launcher and the game was running.

Turns out you can't switch screens (alt-tab) back to the desktop all that easily if you have DDO running on another resolution then your desktop. If they're both the same you can alt-tab all you want.

Btw, having an ssd rocks big time! Load times take mere seconds now.

A small update here:

So far I've had two issues:
1) The same as described here. I'm under the impression that running DxDiag together with windows update gave me DX11.
2) I've had a crash in the burning city. After rebooting my laptop some update was made to my machine by windows 8 (I hope :) ). Restarting the DDO client installed another C++ package.

Later I had another issue, at first I thought it was related to DDO in combination with W8 as the game all of a sudden started to shudder and freeze. Weird as before things where running more then perfect for me on W8. So I started to tweak the graphics settings but alas, even at the lowest settings the frames per second drops remained.

That was a disappointment and I started thinking to go back to win7. However at the same time the thought occurred I wanted to pull out the jack from my headset as the living room was now empty and the noise of other people talking wouldn't bother someone around me. Btw, that headphone port is broken, I only hear sound from the rightsided chanel and from time to time I don't hear a thing at all. While reaching out to the headphone jack I bumped my index finger into the usb dongle for my wireless mouse.

[red]Boooom[/red], immediately the fps dropped low. As I was looking for this to happen, I noticed what was out of order. And yes I wanted to see this happen again so I started poking that dongle some more and then again some more. With each poke my game froze.

Funny thing is, I never noticed this before while I have had this problem for some time now. See my left hand reposes almost on top of that dongle as that's where the fastest usb connector is located on my laptop. The laptop is moved around a lot as that's one of it's base functions. But alas, I guess the manufacturer did not take this kind of use into account when designing the usb port there. Or the headphone port as that one not functioning right either.

So, I moved that mouse dongle to the right side of my laptop. Ok, it's a slower port and that does have some effect on the game but at least it isn't freezing up anymore.

DDO doesn't update past 1.1. The client was written pre 2006 when 1.1 was the cat's meow, and also uses C++ runtime version 6. Current versions (.NET 4.5 and C++ 10) are not used at all, even though there are known issues with 1.1 such as a memory release/recovery bug (what people call a "memory leak"). Hopefully the Windows client will get a pass after Turbine finishes with the Mac client.

As far as the other post about working on a tablet, given enough Ram, compatible video and storage space, it will work... Don't buy one thinking you'll get much use from the touch screen, however. While selecting UI elements works, aiming and moving don't work well at all without a keyboard/mouse or game controller, let alone using the chat boxes. :rolleyes:

I doubt it - that will be windows 8 RT as it's on an atom. This means you can't put anything on it (legally, in terms of the license, I'm sure there are technical ways around that if you really want to) unless it's available via the microsoft store - Windows 8 RT is their version of the apple ecosystem. Even on the non-restricted (i.e., x86 architecture devices), I really don't get on with win8 at all. I've really tried, but I just cannot use that thing on a desktop PC, it drives me crazy.

Maybe when the leap motion comes out, it will make win8 usable without a touchscreen. Guess we'll see in a month or so...

I did have some issue with Windows 8. But it might have been other things.

So, what happened for me is this.
I bought a brand new computer (HP). with windows 8 installed on it (unfortunatly, cause this is the worst Windows Ever)

I installed DDO by downloading it.
Then, i noticed that my Internet was becoming very slow.
I got a ping of 900, a latency of 1000 to 1300 in ddo.

I spent hours looking for an answer, got tech support from HP, from my Internet provider, none found the source of the problem.
I did found it. It was Pando Multimedia Booster (or something like that.)
It install itself automatically when downloading ddo. It is suppose to make you Internet faster... It did the opposite for me. I uninstalled that software, and now, its all good.

Check your specs... The Atom is just a lower power X86 cpu... You're thinking of the ARM processor, which is what RT runs on.

As far as developing software for Windows 8 you can download everything you need for free from Microsoft, including Visual Studio 2012 express which includes Visual Basic, C++. C# ,and several other languages. There are also various SDKs and even free e-books to learn the development processes for Win 8... The only drawback is that you do have to submit your app for inclusion in the Win8 store, primarily to verify compatibility and as far as I can tell costs nothing.

If you "don't get on with Win8 at all" you haven't tried. The following two sites have numerous articles and blogs describing simple methods to make Win8 more like Win7, including bringing back the START button everyone seems to miss.

You can start directly with the desktop instead of the "Metro" screen, for example, although I use the "Metro" screen as a greatly enlarged start menu.

On a positive note - I was able to load ddo onto my new windows 8 machine (Asus N56 series laptop). I did a straight download from ddo.com and didn't have any issues (lucky me).

I am really impressed with how it looks on the machine (but this is a fairly high end laptop so experiences may vary for others)
