So simple. For raids and quest end chains:
1. Keep track of the number of epic completions for a raid.
2. On the 20th epic completion of a raid, present a loot table full of shards (and the obligatory renown reward which no one will take).
You can apply the same tracking to the feeder quests, substituting scrolls or seals for the shards.

I'm not sure that they could do this without either increasing the timer or upping the number of completions before the guaranteed loot list (30? 40?) without unbalancing epic loot with raid loot given the timer difference, although the fact that it requires multiple drops for one epic item might be enough to counterbalance that.
It's a great idea, but might need a bit of tweaking to make sure that the game doesn't turn into nothing but epic loot on everyone like so many other MMOs have devolved into.

I will be very curious to see what the next 2 updates will look like. Could be a huge overall of the entire epic system. It would be great if a developer could comment on the direction of the epic system. There was some allusions to epic chronoscope being the last epic raid. A developer stated they debated on whether or not to make it epic difficulty, but in the end decided to do so. Where is the end game in DDO going?
It's all about epic. Either the developers raise the level cap so we venture into epic levels (which would require much more content than they are churning out now), or they continue to roll out epic content we'll complete at level 20. The latter seems much more realistic.Quote:

This is the way it is right now, but my guess is DDO end game will not be about epic soon. Epic is actually a relatively new thing in the history of DDO - only a little over a year old. There has been a ton of complaints about the epic format. My guess is we will see something fairly different in the future. I am hoping that the developers will speak to this soon, but in all likelihood we will have to wait for lammania update 9 or 10 to get more of a definitive indication for where the end game is going.Quote:

I would prefer to see an option to spend Epic Tokens to buy Shards/Scrolls/Seals. Should probably be priced rather high to avoid an over-inflation of epic items. Somewhere around 75-100 tokens seems like a good idea?

Problem is there can be so many epic items that you probably still wont get the one you need to show up in the 20th run. To be of any use it would have to give you a choice of all items and I dont think the picking mechanism is set up like that - it is random chance what you get.
