Understanding Lag Stuffs...

I know (actually I think I know) there was a post about how to tell if lag you experience is on my end/Turbines end/or actually caused by Vid card not being up to snuff etc, but I can't find it soo..

I've started (in the past week or so) to experience some pretty nasty lag at times. It *seems* to be random, and I haven't heard the entire party experiencing it so it may just be my stuff.

When it happens, I've noticed my loss goes from 0.0 tp 0.1 (usually) and my latency goes from low 50's to high 50's /low 60's.

Haven't changed the vid card/isp or anything, I'm just curious if (from the very limited info I've provided) it's possible to figure out if the issue is on my end or somewhere else. Or if someone knows how to figure out where it's coming from.

honestly, its thirds. turbines end, your pc, and your internet provider. a few days ago i was on an 8 meg connection, and was getting alot of lag, and frequently. almost to the point i was contemplating quitting, and not renewing my sub next week. periodically, my ati driver would crash even with the current driver.

i was lucky the other day, and decided to call my internet company, and ask a few questions. come to find out, the tech plays ddo on argo. he told me my connection was the cause of my latency loss, and a good source of lag. i decided to burn a few bucks, and upgraded to a 25 meg connection, and it made a huge difference. didnt get rid of all of it, but a huge chunk of it. and not a bit of latency loss to be seen yet, either.

most people are using a 3,5,8, or 10 meg connection. and low to moderate video cards. if you use ati cards, the driver likes to crash once in awhile. im using a pair of 512's on crossfire, so this really sucks for me. but the price to pay for having a moderate video card, and an unstable driver. ddo doesnt seem to like ati products or sapphire, as mine are. if you can, up your connection, to getting a better video card, preferably nvidia! it will help a bunch. the rest is turbines end, the huge lag spikes, the the client crashes, and some latency loss, but they will never admit their game is extremely flawed, especially where lag is concerned, and the causes of it. because that would mean more work for them.

if you can get a great high end card, and a higher connection than 10 meg, then enjoy the drastic difference. but it wont cure it all. hope this helps.

I call BS on this whole post.

I am using a 7 meg connection atm and that is 6 more megs than I was using 4 years ago and the lag has not changed at all.

4 years ago I was using an x300? not sure and the graphics requirements have not changed all the much in the past 4 years,now I am using an x1650 and still get the same lag as i did 4 years ago.

The lag is mostly server based and based upon player population on each server,if you go to harbor and marketplace you will notice more lag than you would in an instance,due to the NPC's in those locales and the player population.

Now some players upgrade their video cards and connections like this guy supposedly did and ignore the fact that there is still skipping and minor rubberbanding,but do their best to ignore it since they are paying more for more equipment and that should not be happening right?

If your equipment is older than 4 years old,then yes it is your equipment,if your connection is less than 1 meg then I would say stop using dial up,isp's only offer 1.5meg t o 20 meg nothing below that.If you are using a sat' connection then that could be delay on that type of connection as well.

But...


if you have at least 128meg of video card ram,a 1.5meg connection and 2gigs of ram then it is either your ISP provider/a router between turbine and you/turbines 6 year old servers.Now even a server upgrade in the past 4 years would not negate it being turbines fault.Eve online actually upgraded their servers twice in the past 4 years due to IBM selling them **** equipment that could not handle the load.

So do not upgrade your hardware or connection speed unless it falls behind the sizes i mentioned above and please do not listen to people like the guy above me,he obviously does not know what he is talking about or is one of those fanboys who thinks the game developer can never be wrong.

I run a high end i7 W7 64 bit system, dual 5870's and all the other bits necessary to consider my system med-high to high.

My connection is low bandwidth low latency - 2mb but on lag dependant games like COD4 i will run on eastern european servers (i'm in ireland - far west europe) i will always see a latency of under 38ms (that's a return trip btw).

I see lag related issues from both graphics and net.
The net cannot always be reliable but my system is, i know how to run it, bad coding is making a serious issue out of simple game-play.
DDO system usage is a smittance of what other games require but still messes up.


BTW i play Eve online where server lag is something we understand, turbine needs to take a page from CCP's playbook on server design (54,000 on the same server).

you can call bs all you want, bro. turbine is only responsible for some lag. some people wont admit they are running on a crappy connection, or running on a lowscale pc. im using a pair of 512 ati sapphire cards, 4 gigs of ati ram. most arent running this, and coupled with a crappy connection, you get lag.

lol, upon reading, though, you are basically saying the same as i am. and if you would have read my post, even with my hardware, i was getting some nasty lag at times. on an 8 meg connection. 25 meg= drastic difference. as for being a fanboy, you prolly should read most of my posts. i HATE turbine. nobody said a 3 meg connection couldnt run the game, i just said it contributes to lag and latency loss. so, before you type, read first. and lemme guess, you are an expert? i got my info from someone who works for my internet provider, and he plays ddo. im sure he would know more than someone talking out their a$$. take it for what its worth. hehe, graphics havent changed much in 4 years....yeah, right. they only went from dx8-10, and releasing 11. why do you think the minimum requirements for ddo has scaled higher over the last 4 years. its been 3 years since i have bought a video card. lemme guess, you live in my house to tell me what i have and dont have?? personally, some of you blame lag when you cant play your toons right, or cant handle a task in the game. alot of people do.

it is turbines fault. but only a third. but those that defend lag wholeheartedly are most likely crappy players, or are playing on a laptop or low end pc, and have a crappy connection. as for the rubberbanding, and harbor and market instances, thats all turbines part. and if you are so well off, try a higher connection, and see the difference before you try to belittle someone with a holier than thou attitude. if you havent tried it, you cant possibly know, therefore cant possibly speak on it. do your homework first

note: thats the reason why lag hasnt been fixed. turbine thinks its the isp and personal pc's are the problem, therefore will donate their time to making bunny hats and egg hunts. its a 3 way street, and all are waiting on the other to correct the problem. and nobody is correcting it, so the problem will remain for another 4 years, unless you do your part to fix your end. then the only lag you will experience will be turbines end

If the lag is so bad then get a place to live in by Turbine and see if you can make a deal to make a direct connection to their server. Might need a dual-port modem, but you'll eliminate a lot of the lag...or at least, that's the theory anyways...
