So I started up the game earlier today and after about 10 mins of play the game froze and red pixels showed up all over the screen and my PC needed to be shutdown and restarted. Now trying again and watching my GPU temps, DDO is causing my GPU to shoot past 80c. When playing TF2/Aion/prett much any modern game stays at low 60s. I have no idea what the deal is, I really want to play the game some more and see how things go. But not at the cost of my GPU.

Seems strange that more modern games wouldn't give you the same problem. You should probably post a dxdiag file here (people always ask for one), and maybe try playing on a lower graphic setting?
What card is it? 80C isnt really that abnormal for some cards nowadays. Are your drivers up to date?Fans all Spinning freely? No Gunk inthe case?
Have two newer computers and having the same problem...Will have both of my computers checked but will decrease the settings and resolution and will see if that helps.
My card will go above 80 degrees if I don't crank the fan. I noticed that once I hit 80 or so, the card starts throttling down (reducing framerate) to try and reduce the heat.
GTX 285, running at 2560x1600, cranked graphics (the 285 is friggin amazing).
I'll give you the advice that I learned the hard way (after burning out my 2x8800GTs): by default, your video card fan will operate at 40% or less. I highly recommend that you crank that up to between 90% and 100%, depending on how loud it gets and when the noise starts to bother you (makes little difference on my card).
On my video card, this drops the operating temperature while playing DDO by a whopping 10 degrees Celsius (:eek:!).
How would one go about increasing fan speed on the radeon x1650? Just installed it and it keeps freezing on any 3d application after 2 to 5 minutes.Quote:

I'd try in the in-game Options menu under the Troubleshoot section lowering the Engine Speed option down to Low or even Very Low.

Sorry I can't offer step-by-step instructions, as I'm only experienced in two methods of adjusting fan speed, one of which is now deprecated (nvidia control panel) and wouldn't apply to you anyway. :(

Might you have a Vista or airflow problem? Bum card? Not every 8800GTS is created equal.

Not sure why, but in general, out of all the games I own, DDO seems to push my video card the hardest and is THE game I get the highest GPU temps with.
My temps are still very much reasonable in the low 60's, but that is with my fan set manual to 100%. else it shoots up to 70's. Temps are relative cause what's hot for one is cool to another model, but DDO really seems to push the GPU.
One option which may help some is to put a FPS limit to something you can tolerate. My FPS varies from +/- 40 to 75, so I set a max FPS of 65 and it REALLY helped to smooth things out.
I actually keep my GPU at about 50c most of the time. I will see what temp it runs in this game and get back to you.
You know, that's a good point. I play GTA IV on the same rig at ludicrous settings... that game has waaaaay better graphics than DDO, but the GPU runs much cooler when playing GTA IV.Quote:

Card gets quite hot imo - 75 to 80 degrees or so. Never got that hot running anything else...I've run Lotro, Aoc, Warhammer, Tf2 etc on this same machine and most of those got up to 65 or so. Nothing I was worried about at least. Changing my graphics options in DDO without decreasing my resolution has had little to no effect on temps at all.
I use a great little utility called RivaTuner however.
It can give you direct control of your video card fan, and set thresholds on how to operate it.
So I have it running at 25% speed by default, but with a quick right click on the menu icon in the taskbar, I can get the fan to run at 60, 80, 100% speed (or whatever, I just chose those 3 speeds to put in).
I also have thresholds...so when the card temp goes over 50, the fan goes to 60%. When the card temp goes over 60, the fan goes to 80%, and when the card temp hits 70, the fan goes to 100% speed.
So my card tends to hover around 70 degrees while running DDO now, but it almost never gets very far into the 70s and I don't hit my personal "omg" threshold of 80 degrees where I start to get worried.

BTW - if you don't want to install RivaTuner, and use an Nvidia card, the latest versions of Ntune - the nvidia control panel app that gets installed with your drivers - has pretty much the same functionality in it. You can set up fan speed profiles and profiles that get the fan to go at a certain speed according to the card temps. I already had Rivatuner installed so I haven't played with nTune at all, but it shouldn't be too hard to figure out.
