Just posting for fun...

Screenshot at 7680x1600 resolution. 80+ fps on ultra settings with Radeon 7970. Of course, now that I have a fun rig to play on, I have no time to play.

I wanted to say something snarky...but that does look really cool!

Oh I got something...

In that resolution, you can't play Halflings...you would not be able to see them.

Thats the best I can do atm...

If it'd be cheaper for you to send it somewhere in the states, I'd be happy to look after your rig for you. Wicked sweet dude. Christ you need sherpas to carry your pointer from one side of the screen to the other.

I've been looking into a similar setup. Do you get a decent "wrap-around" feel with just the Monitors and the Radeon or do you also need some additional special software to accomplish that?

If so, what's the name of the software?

With 3x30" monitors you will have complete immersion. beyond what your peripheral vision can see. It's almost too much, you actually need to turn your head to fully see the sides. For gaming I think 3x27" would be better. Less resolution to drive and not as overwhelming.

I use an AMD card and they call their technology eyefinity. The 7970 is the first single card to be able to drive 3 monitors. Before this you had to have at least two GPU's. When setup through the cards driver the 3 screens appear as a single high resolution monitor to all software that can support non-standard resolutions.

Many games do support this multi monitor tech, but not all. And a game may support one platform, but not another. For example, Alice: Madness Returns works fine with nVidia Surround but does not support AMD Eyefinity. Skyrim also has no official support for either, but there is a work around to make it work. I've not tried it yet, but I hear it looks phenominal.

There was a free 3rd party app at one time that would allow you to have wide screen gaming on just about any game. But it was a single developer that created it and he was unable to maintain the updates for every game after every patch, so its no longer being supported.

There's an entire forum dedicated to gaming on these types of setups. Good luck with your setup!

I'd love to see other views similar to this one.

Actually, I think it'd be pretty cool to have a wallpaper that was five or six of those stacked on top of the other.

Like...

House K
House D
House P

or
-The Devil Invasion
Marketplace, Chronoscope style
Amrath Explorer
Vale of Twilight from the highest point/perch/whatever explorer
Subterrane, by VoD
ToD Throne Room

It makes me wonder if there's a way to do that in high enough detail, and at appropriate dimensions, to make the wallpaper unique and interesting.

Do you have Vsync turn on in the Options for graphics? That syncs your FPS to your monitors refresh rate (usually 60). I have the same monitor probably (the Asus 27" one) and a 7970 as well. If I turn off the Vsync, FPS's jump waaaay up to 150-200. But I prefer Vysnc on as it create a much smooth game experience.

I have been away for a bit over a year, but with the new update in Faerun I am looking at getting back into it. Family and such has made it hard over the last year, but the kids are getting bigger and I am hoping to have a little more game time. Anyway. I recently built an eyefinity 3 machine with a new 7900 card as well and was curious how good the support for it was in DDO. Is it buggy or does everything display well, how is the FOV? Any insight would be helpful!

Thanks

Have you tried Portrait mode for more hight and less width ? I would think better immersion, with less head/neck movement.

You might want to look into TrackIR for head tracking. It works very nice for flight sims.

How does the monitor edges affect the immersion, wouldn't the inch or more at the sides of each monitor leave blank spaces or did I miss something?

At first it is very annoying and distracting and you will focus on and be aware of the bezels. Kind of like the first time you wear eyeglasses. But then you get pulled into the game and you stop noticing the bezels; they vanish and your left with this incedible immersion in the game. The overall experience becomes rather aweseome...

Flavilandile
04-01-2012, 01:27 AM
It also depends of the size of the bezels.

I have a 4cm interruption between my two displays ( 2 bezels side by side ) once you get used to it, it disappear from your mind.

The really important thing is to have the same screens if you go dual screening. Not same resolution, same screens.

Before my current setup I had two different screens ( with the same resolution ) and as the bezel colors weren't the same it was really noticeable and annoying. ( as the color change will attrack your eyes when you go from a screen to the other )

I won't even go into screens with different resolution, because that's not a workable solution for dual/triple screening in games like DDO. ( though it works well at work, one screen with the mails the other one with whatever you're doing at that time )

Roman, I was so in love with what you did I researched and purchased 3 monitors (much smaller, 23" monitors) and have the full screen setup. It is an odd sensation running around with things surrounding you. Like you said, very immersive with 3 23" monitors; I can only imagine 3 30" monsters!

I am running at 5760 x 1080 and have only been able to run in full screen mode. Just curious if you have tried running in a windowed mode and have you been successful.

Anyway, great post. You are an inspiration to gaming geeks everywhere.

Using a 46" 1920x1080 LED TV. 3D is kinda cool in this came but limited down to 24 fps because of hdmi 1.4 tech limitations.

Just a bit of clarity of information for some in this thread:

When the eyefinity technology first came out, I believe around the time of the Radeon 5870, it was true that you did infact require two GPUs to run the triple monitor display with Eyefinity, that meant at the time either 2x 5870, or 1x5970 which was the dual GPU card at the time.

Eyefinity was improved and integrated with all the standard cards ever since then, and beyond having a card powerful enough to actually perform reasonably at these super high resolutions, you no longer need two cards to run triple monitor eyefinity.

If you are trying to connect 3 monitors to a single video card however you are going to at least need one with a display port connector, either an actual display port monitor or a DVI->Display Port adapter. (You no longer even need a powered active adapter, passive adapters work fine now.)

As far as bezels go, you will notice them... sortof.

Realistically playing on a triple widescreen set up is not a 3x wider version of the same experience as playing on a single monitor.

The biggest benefit you will find is a huge amount of additional realestate for interface components. Most of your commonly used interface parts you will set up on your middle monitor exactly the same as you would with a single monitor. You can even see this occurring on the OPs screenshot.

The nice thing is however you will be able to move all non priority interface components off your main screen to avoid any clutter - chat windows, the map, the inventory, etc.

Since you are primarily using your center monitor in a similar way as a single monitor set up the bezels have very little impact on your play. As far as the view off the sides, in general, its pretty to look at, occasionally allows you to notice things you wouldnt otherwise notice, and otherwise when you are playing seriously and focused, you dont notice it a lot.

For this reason, I strongly recommend that one never tries to play the game multimonitor with an even number of monitors (you do not want your bezel in the middle of the playing field, you want a true center monitor)

That said, particularly in MMORPGs, the extra realestate for interface is unbelievably convenient, and once you switch you will never want to go back.

I personally run 7 chat windows, 14 hot bars, and almost always have my full map open, and yet never experience any screen clutter. If you are considering trying out such a set up, I highly recommend it, and it is easier nowadays than ever before.

Any of the recent top Radeon vid cards (say top 2 or 3 of the last 2 generations) can handle a resolution of 5760x1080 without much difficulty at very high settings with just some minor tweaks, the lower level cards you may want to drop shadows and AA a bit.

1) Configure your desktop to stretch across the monitors ("Extend Desktop to This Display" for each monitor).

2) Run DDO in a window and stretch the window across multiple monitors.

Your issue is the notebook... we have desktops with a real graphic card ( or more than one ).

Then we configure the display driver to go into extended desktop mode ( it fools windows into thinking that the Pc is connected to a single screen with the relevant display [ in my case 3840*1080 ] ).

So if you use a notebook with an integrated graphic card there's probably no chances you can do it. If you have a Radeon or a GeForce in your notebook, you will have to see if the chipset support the extended mode. ( most notebook graphic card don't support it, and even if it supports it, you might end with a slideshow due to the bandwidth limitation between the CPU and the GPU. )

Ok then you just need to coax your graphic driver into extended mode... after you'll be able to play with 3 screens.
DDO is an old game and doesn't know how to handle collaged desktop so you need to fool it into thinking that you have one huge screen.

Time to consider a GPU upgrade and add some monitors. The idea of having the map open in one monitor and other stuff on the other side monitor intrigues me. I use 2 monitors now but only for work and utility stuff, not gaming.

I have a 23:9 widescreen monitor that is like the older 3 monitor setup just one screen. Hopefully this summer I can upgrade to a true 4k 23:9 with the slight curve. I use a Radeon 7970 1Ghz Edition with everything turned on and getting 100fps. My research, as of this posting, is the nVidia GTX 980 (or Titan) is the only single card that can give us 60 fps at 4k resolution.

I hope there is a graphics update in the works to bring DDO on par or better with other modern MMORPGs. Game play is fine but be nice for a graphics update. Something along the lines of what Anarchy Online was doing (there is a youtube somewhere with, I think, their Conan engine doing the rendering). I liked the game play and they were leaving that alone so very little hours used for game logic updates; just UI interface glue basically and some internal trigger for the action code for fx etc.. Not sure what happened there but there are a lot of decent, reasonably priced model shops around for the grunt work :)

Good Hunting !

Same here. But I am sticking with a single display for now. If I was going to do something with multiple screens or a large resolution, I plan on removing the bezels and making a custom frame so it just is a single large screen.

Any semi-decent recent computer will be able to pull it ( after all at the time of my first answer in that thread I was dualscreening on a 8800GTS and a Pentium D930 ) so the money investment is not that important if you replace your computer and wants to play with it.

As for the pain, it's mainly knowing that you need to fool windows into thinking that all the screens are just one single huge screen... once you know that it's relatively easy.
