Chests are nice, everyone love chests, but the pile of glinting gold with jeweled swords and necklaces glinting in the light also looks nice.
They'd work the same was as chests, you just wouldnt need to unlock or open them ever. it's possible they could be trapped. Spike trap under the gold piles would be nice :D
Players would come up to search the pile and pull their 1-3 items out of it just like they do a chest.
You may already have that with the dragon treasures I dont know, never been that far. It doesnt make sense that a dragon would even keep stuff in a chest, he'd put it all in a room of it's own and seal it with magic, or some puzzle. Hide it behind illusionary walls etc anything to foil the treasure seeker.
Also it's possible treasure could be stashed in sarcophagi with removable lids, cabinets, under a bed. Lots of other objects could count as "chests"

If gelatinous cubes ever make it into the game, the chest will be the corpse of the cube itself , since thats where they "gather" all the stuff from the things they eat. All the stuff they dont eat stays inside them.
Yeah mechanically it's still a chest, everyone loots, has reservations (that in the near future can be transferable to another)
It just looks like other stuff, artwork wise.
I'm also not a big fan of the appearing chest I must say, rare spawns do it currently, sure there are some times that a chest appearing can be justified, it could have been invisible and when the owner who cast it perishes the spell does too , making it "visible". But it certainly should happen in every case.
I'd prefer if rare spawns decided if they were going to appear when the instance is first created.. and the chest is already where it's supposed to be.
You could for example have the chest there ALWAYS, and the rare spawn in fact just spawns the key to it. So it's simply not openable, but it doesnt mean that the spawn is actually there at the moment. Sure it might be marginally frustrating when theres a chest there you cant open, but what would be better would be if the chest was just scenery (it not even usable) except whtn the rare-spawn were around, then you'd know there WAS a key that opened it, and somebody or something is carrying it.

A thing to understand...
In this game Chests are not ACTUAL chests. Chests in this game are often an object for the more abstract, "We spend some time searching the room and the bodies of our foes for anything of note." The appearing chest represents that aspect of searching the bodies. Could you imagine if you had to actually search in dungeons to find treasure?
While a couple different graphics might be nice, a chest is not usually a chest, it is simply a focal point for "We Search for Treasure".

and on a further note. there are some piles of gold you can search in higher level quests.
shrieking mines has a pile of junk you search through for the horrid figurine, and the chains of flame(the one inside the gnoll city) has another pile of gold you can search for the efreet orb.

And even higher level quests than shrieking mines, specifically the preraid for gianthold, have actual piles of gold you can loot. The 3 dragon rooms, all have piles of gold laying around that you can loot for random scrolls, arrows, gold, platinum, potions, all kinds of basic stuff, including wands.

Or: "We rob the people we just murdered".

id like it in quests to have all the chests at the end of the quest.
i dont like the chests to just appear out of nowhere.
(eg) the wiz king end room where you have the 3 chests.
do the quest and at the end have up to 12 chests(i think).
then do any trading you want after the quest is over.
i'll give you this ______ i just pulled for that vorpal(lol)
