Spell Schools 101

Spell Schools 101 is meant to be an introductory course into the spells of DDO. Advance knowledge will not be found here. (Saving that for Spell Schools 102)
However, hopefully this introduction will assist you in understanding the fundamental mechanics of the spell caster you want to reference.

Knowing exactly what spells are used for and where they come from can give you a better understanding, and thus an edge, while using spells in game.
Regardless of class, if your character uses spells, they are from 1 of 9 separate caster levels and 1 of 8 different spell schools.

You may have noticed that not all of your offensive spells are landing or doing what you expected when you target a mob and cast your spells.
A couple of things you may need to consider is the Spell Resistance of the mob and the Spell’s DC save check.

Your Advice, Suggestions, Notes, or Videos is Needed and Appreciated!!!

Uggg........ my computer doesn't make good videos. I don't have enough disk space to make the videos without a low resolution or low frame rate.

In an effort to make this thread useful for everyone, I am requesting people to leave links to Videos of the spells in use. Also please post any additional tips you may have for other players that maybe considering the use of the spell for the first time or other forgotten tips you think Vets should be aware of. By posting your link, credit will be given to you with the link to the post as I update each spell school. Also, there is plenty of space for everyone's tips, so if you see a spell that you have a different tip for, please post it as well, I will try to link all posts that don't repeat the same information.

***Note from the Author of the thread ***
I played this game from close to the start of online. When I left (out of boredom) the game was still at a level cap of 12. I recently came back to DDO once it became "Free-ish." A lot has changed!! And unfortunately almost all of my original notes and links have met the black hole of forum's past. I no longer know what all of the spells do and there's no way I can be expected to give the best advice on the subject. So I am asking if everyone else will help fill-in the advice slots and make this guide useful again.

Since this (the main page of all my original links) was left intact, I have decided to simply start over here with edits and links to posts with-in the same thread. In order to keep this thread viable, please post as many Tips, Suggestions, Notes, or Videos to the individual spells as possible in this thread. I most likely will not be trolling Youtube or the Forums to create links for this thread. However, if you find one, and would like to see it attached here because of its relevance, please let me know and I will try to link them here.

Each conjuration spell belongs to one of five subschools.
Conjurations (the summoning subschool) bring manifestations of objects, creatures, or some form of energy to you, actually transport creatures from another plane of existence to your plane (calling), (healing) heal, (teleportation) transport creatures or objects over great distances , or (creation) create objects or effects on the spot. Creatures you conjure usually, but not always, obey your commands. The creature or object must appear within the spell's range, but it does not have to remain within the range.

Summoning Subschool
A summoning spell instantly brings a creature or object to a place you designate. When the spell ends or is dispelled, a summoned creature is instantly sent back to where it came from, but a summoned object is not sent back unless the spell description specifically indicates this. A summoned creature also goes away if it is killed or if its hit points drop to 0 or lower. It is not really dead. It takes 24 hours for the creature to reform, during which time it can't be summoned again.
When the spell that summoned a creature ends and the creature disappears, all the spells it has cast expire. A summoned creature cannot use any innate summoning abilities it may have, and it refuses to cast any spells that would cost it XP, or to use any spell-like abilities that would cost XP if they were spells.


Calling Subschool
A calling spell transports a creature from another plane to the plane you are on. The spell grants the creature the one-time ability to return to its plane of origin, although the spell may limit the circumstances under which this is possible. Creatures who are called actually die when they are killed; they do not disappear and reform, as do those brought by a summoning spell (see summoning). The duration of a calling spell is instantaneous, which means that the called creature can't be dispelled.


Healing Subschool
Certain divine conjurations heal creatures or even bring them back to life.


Teleportation Subschool
A teleportation spell transports one or more creatures or objects a great distance. The most powerful of these spells can cross planar boundaries. Unlike summoning spells, the transportation is (unless otherwise noted) one-way and not dispellable. Teleportation is instantaneous travel through the Astral Plane. Anything that blocks astral travel also blocks teleportation.


Creation Subschool
A creation spell manipulates matter to create an object or creature in the place the spellcaster designates (subject to the limits noted above). If the spell has a duration other than instantaneous, magic holds the creation together, and when the spell ends, the conjured creature or object vanishes without a trace. If the spell has an instantaneous duration, the created object or creature is merely assembled through magic. It lasts indefinitely and does not depend on magic for its existence.

Evocation spells manipulate energy or tap an unseen source of power to produce a desired end.
In effect, they create something out of nothing. Many of these spells produce spectacular effects, and evocation spells can deal large amounts of damage.

Illusion spells deceive the senses or minds of others. Typically allowing you the crucial first strike in battle while remaining sheathed in the shadows of the dungeon. They cause people to see things that are not there, not see things that are there, hear phantom noises, or remember things that never happened. Illusions come in five subschools.

Figment Subschool
A figment spell creates a false sensation. Those who perceive the figment perceive the same thing, not their own slightly different versions of the figment. (It is not a personalized mental impression.) Figments cannot make something seem to be something else. A figment that includes audible effects cannot duplicate intelligible speech unless the spell description specifically says it can. If intelligible speech is possible, it must be in a language you can speak. If you try to duplicate a language you cannot speak, the image produces gibberish. Likewise, you cannot make a visual copy of something unless you know what it looks like.

Because figments and glamers are unreal, they cannot produce real effects the way that other types of illusions can. They cannot cause damage to objects or creatures, support weight, provide nutrition, or provide protection from the elements.

Consequently, these spells are useful for confounding or delaying foes, but useless for attacking them directly. For example, it is possible to use a silent image spell to create an illusory cottage, but the cottage offers no protection from rain.


Glamer Subschool
A glamer spell changes a subject's sensory qualities, making it look, feel, taste, smell, or sound like something else, or even seem to disappear.


Pattern Subschool
Like a figment, a pattern spell creates an image that others can see, but a pattern also affects the minds of those who see it or are caught in it. All patterns are mind-affecting spells.


Phantasm Subschool
A phantasm spell creates a mental image that usually only the caster and the subject (or subjects) of the spell can perceive. This impression is totally in the minds of the subjects. It is a personalized mental impression. (It's all in their heads and not a fake picture or something that they actually see.) Third parties viewing or studying the scene don't notice the phantasm. All phantasms are mind-affecting spells.


Shadow Subschool
A shadow spell creates something that is partially real from extradimensional energy. Such illusions can have real effects. Damage dealt by a shadow illusion is real.

Tip for Burning hands:

Burning hands is one of the most powerful AOE Spells (area of effect) there are at lower levels. It generally becomes one of the Wiz/Sorcs first 'goto' spells. The cool down time can be slow, so it helps to have a secondary spell hot-barred and ready to go in between castings.

*** Since the spell is an AOE spell, it is best used when you can pull several mob together in to narrow cluster (like in doorways and narrow passage ways) before using. ***

I played this game from close to the start of online. When I left (out of boredom) the game was still at MOD 4 with a level cap of 12. I recently came back to DDO once it became "Free-ish." A lot has changed!! And my original notes and links have met the black hole of forum's past. I no longer know what all of the spells do and there's no way I can be expected to give the best advice on the subject. So I am hoping everyone else will help fill-in the advice slots and make this guide useful again.

Since this (the main page of all my links) was left intact, I have decided to simply start over here with edits and links to posts with-in the same thread. In order to keep this thread viable, please post as many tips to the individual spells as possible to this thread. I will not be trolling Youtube or the Forums to create links for this thread. However, if you find one, and would like to see it attached here because of its relevance, let me know and I will try to link the ones that have made it through a few Forum updates.

Spell Penetration and the Spells Affected by It
The spells on the list below are spells subjected to a Spell Resistance or Spell Penetration check prior to a separate Spell DC save check (if any). When trying to decide if you should take the Spell Penetration Feat, you may want to consider how often you will actually use the spells affected by it.


Spell Resistance as defined by DDOWiki (http://ddowiki.com/page/Spell_resistance)

My Explanation

Spell Resistance is the ability to initially save from a spell on the list below (the spells are noted in the compendium by having a "Yes" in the Spell Resistance Field). Spell resistance overlaps and does not stack, so you can consider it an “extra layer” of protection. Some spells on the list must complete both a Spell Resistance check as well as a DC save check. A Spell Resistance save causes the effect of the spell on you or your target to fail before any saving throws from DC are ever checked.

Spell resistance on yourself is granted via spells that give spell resist, race granted spell resistance (ie. Drows are granted 11 spell resistance naturally), or items and armor that grant spell resist, as well as your stat and class modifiers.

The Spell Resistance number you have to beat on mobs is a number set by the devs using a similar calculation during dungeon set-up. Thus they seem to typically give a higher spell resistance to the caster mobs or named bosses. And it is that number you must first roll against to be able to cast a spell affected by spell resistance in order to hit that target.

Casters will use a Spell Penetration check to cast the spells below to beat the spell resistance on selected mobs. A Spell Penetration check is calculated by using a 1d20 roll and adding it to your caster level + your Spell Penetration feats (Spell Penetration (http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Feat:Spell_Penetration) and Greater Spell Penetration (http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Feat:Greater_Spell_Penetration)) + your Improved Spell Penetration Enhancements (http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Special:Advancedsearch?type=enhancement&action=search&item_type[]=a&name=spell+pen) (1, 2, and 3, depending on the number of Spell Penetration Enhancements you take)+ the highest Spell Penetration item bonus (no more than 1 item can be added)

Your Spell Penetration roll must be equal to or higher than your target’s given Spell Resistance. If the spell penetration check is lower, then the spell fails (1d20 + Caster Level + Feats + Enhancements + highest Item bonus to spell penetration).


**** EXAMPLE ****

Lets say you are a level 17 Wizard with both Spell penetration Feats, 2 Spell Penetration Enhancements, and any +2 spell penetration item for level 7 spells (like a Blue Dragonscale Robe (http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Armor:Blue_Dragonscale_Robe)) .

If you want to cast Banishment (http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Spell:Banishment) on a qualified mob that has a spell resistance number of 32, you will need a spell penetration roll of 32 or higher to succeed the first check.

So you add your bonuses first.

A level 17 Wizard gets 17 points from levels.
Having both Spell Penetration feats gives 4 points.
Having 2 levels of the Spell Penetration Enhancements gives 2 points.
And having a +2 Spell Penetration item for level 7 spells gives 2 more points.
Giving you a total 25 points before you ever roll.

Since the mob has a spell resistance number of 32, you only need to roll a 7 or higher to set the spell to the next check. However a roll of 6 or lower will cause the spell to fail.

Spell DC and the Spells with DC Save Cecks

The spells in the spell school links below are spells subjected to a Spell Difficulty Class or a Spell DC save check. When trying to decide if you should take the Spell Focus Feat (http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Feat:Spell_Focus) and Greater Spell Focus Feat (http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Feat:Greater_Spell_Focus), you may want to consider how often you will actually use the spells with a DC save and how much DC assistance you might really need.

My Explanation
The spells listed in the Spell Schools below are subjected to a chance to save called a Spell DC save check. It’s the target number that you or your target must meet or beat in one of three different areas for a check or saving throw to succeed.

The three different kinds of saving throws are Fortitude, Reflex, and Will:

** Note: There are many feats that can boost your own saves for each type. However, I am writing this as a general guide to introduce the point of what you are trying pass to successfully cast the spell on your targets and not necessarily what you need to boost your own save abilities. Please refer to the other forum posts for that specific information as there are a lot of very useful guides just for that purpose.

Fortitude: (http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Glossary:Fortitude_Save) A fortitude save would come from your physical aptitude or stamina. Your constitution modifier is the main stat added to your fortitude save throws.
Reflex: (http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Glossary:Reflex_Save) A reflex save would come from your agility or quick reactions. Your Dexterity modifier is added to your reflex saving throws unless you have taken a feat to change the ability stat that is added. Like Insightful Reflexes ( http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Feat:Insightful_Reflexes).
Will: (http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Glossary:Will_Save) A will save comes from your mental toughness. Your wisdom modifier is added to your will saving throws unless you have taken a feat to change the ability stat that is added. Like Force of Personality ( http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Feat:Force_of_Personality ).

The dev’s have placed similar settings to your targeted mobs during dungeon set-up. So then, it’s safe to say that you would want to consider the type of save before casting a spell on a specific class of mob. In other words, a spell with a will save would naturally work better on a fighter class mob that typically has a lower will modifier, instead of a wizard that typically has a higher will modifier. However, your success on the spell landing is not completely dependant on your targeted mob. As a matter of fact, it’s mostly dependant on the caster and their relation to the specific spell class of the spell the caster is attempting to cast.


For those that are mathematicly challlenged, don't stress it too much --- The spells in-game will also show your total DC for that spell's save, the same as it does for your metatmagic additions.

A caster’s spell DC needs to at least be equal to or be able pass the targeted mob’s save modifier for the spell. Casters will attempt to do this by adding 10 as a base start + the spell level (if a spell is lower than level 9, the spell level can be raised to highest level of spells the caster can cast by using the Metamagic Feat, Heighten Spell (http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Feat:Heighten_Spell)) + the Spell Focus Feat and the Greater Spell Focus Feat (the Spell Focus for the feats must be the same spell school as the spell the caster is attempting to use) + Spell Focus bonus from items or armor (Again, the Spell Focus from the item must be the same spell school as the spell the caster is using. However the caster does not have to have the Spell Focus feat to use the item’s benefit. Remember, items do not stack so you will only get the benefit from the highest of 2 separate items) + caster’s base casting stat modifier(Intelligence for Wizards, Wisdom for Paladins, Rangers and Clerics , and Charisma for Sorcerers, Favored Souls and Bards; this includes your stat modifiers to your base stat such as feats, enhancements, spells, and items that boost your ability stat)


10 base start + Spell Level + Spell Focus Feats + Spell Focus Item bonus + caster’s base spell stat modifier

**** EXAMPLE ****
Lets say you are a level 17 Wizard with, with 2 intelligence boosting Enhancements and an Intelligence hat of +6 to equal 34 total Intelligence for your character. You also have both Spell Focus Feat and Grater Spell Focus for Enchantment spells, an Enchantment Spell Focus Item in one hand and a Necromancy Spell Focus Item in the other.

You want to cast a level 6 Mass Suggestion (http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Spell:Mass_Suggestion) spell with a chance of a successful will save negating the spell. You have your Metamagic Feat, Heighten, active to raise the level of the spell as high as you can cast. Thus you are casting the level 6 spell as a level 9 spell since you are able to cast other level 9 spells.

You have targeted a fighter class mob that has a DC number of 32, so you will need a casting DC amount equal to or higher than 32 to succeed against the Mob’s save check.

So, let’s add it up……

****Remember ****
10 base start + Spell Level + Spell Focus Feats + Spell Focus Item bonus + caster’s base spell stat modifier

You are automatically given 10 casting points to start a DC check with: +10
The Spell Level with Heighten is +9
Your Spell Focus Feats for Enchantment Spells gives you +2
Your Enchantment Spell Focus Item gives you +1
Your Necromancy Spell Focus Item does not apply to this spell +0
Your Intelligence Ability Modifier (for 34 total Intelligence) gives you + 11

Giving the spell a total of 33 to beat the Will save check

Making your Spell good on anything with a will save of 33 or lower however if the mob has a Will Save Stat of 34 or higher, the spell will fail

I have to say I am impressed with your undertaking! Good job so far. I have several casters and would suggest a build section. For example, a build more focused on "party play" for each class as well as one focused on soloing or "short-manning" quests. Though this can be done, especially by soem of the more seasoned players, with really any build there are "tricks to the trade" I would say and you need to consider stats / gear / money available a bit more in my opinion as a soloer.

Also, do you seek advice on the spells in general, I feel the lvl 1 spell for cleric/ FVS and Wiz/Sorc that is highly underated and not carried by many new players is Nightshield. It blocks both force and magic missles (unlike Shield spell) which is beneficial essentially from Korthos to end game. It also adds a bonus to your saving throws which increases with the lvl of the spell.

your advice on Nightshield is exactly what I am looking for. So i gave you +1 rep and advertised for you on main page. Please feel free to give any other spell advices you think could help others.

As for the builds, equipment, and focus play styles....... I plan to write a 'Spell Schools 102' and possibly '103' guides for more advanced information. But that is still a Huge project that I am slowly getting into.
