View Full Version : Clickies, The Route To Self Sufficiency

I've decided to write this article to help people wanting to solo a little more and also less dependent on others. It is also in response to many threads started to diss clerics. This article is not entirely about using clickies only but in addition to some other items.

Just in case you are wondering what clickies are, they are items with a spell which you can activate as long as you are of sufficient level to use that item. All you need is to have it in your hotbar, click on it once to equip it and another to activate it. Hence, the term clickie. By the way, make sure you switch back to your original gear after you use it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Clickies can save you on many occasions. Some of the more important clickies you should have are resist element, prot from element/evil, bless, shield, divine favor/power, remove fear/curse/disease, neutralise poison, lesser restore, heroism/greater heroism, haste, deathward. Of course, you'll want those with as many charges as possible but the level requirement increases as well.

For this guide, I've classified them into 4 main categories, defensive, offensive, named and raid clickies. Defensive clickies are those who basically buffs or remove harmful statuses. Offensive clickies serve to deal enemies damage or to lower their effectiveness. As the names implies, named clickies are those which are named items and raid clickies are raid items which have clickie effects.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Defensive Clickies

I need not comment on the resist and protection from element clickies. basically it provides you a short term ability to be resistant/immune to elemental damage. When you are of sufficient level, you can avoid the resist clickies and go for resist items as they provide you with permanent resistance.

Protection from evil is especially useful for certain occasions. The spell affords you immunity to certain effects eg domination by vampire. It also gives you an extra +2 to saves against evil mobs. This clickie may be replaced if you find the silver flame fragment, from the church and cult (house p vampire), which offers permanent protection from evil.

Bless can improve your saves, attack rolls and also to remove certain spell effect such as bane spell. However, the duration is only 1 minute, so its best used before a major battle. Please note that bless does not stack with bard song, which offers a greater bonus of the same type and cannot be dispelled.

The shield spell can give you a better armor class provided you do not use a shield which gives you a +4 or better AC. In addition, it gives the ability to stop magic missile and force missiles. Thus a very good spell against magic missile casting mobs like kobold shamans or trogolyte casters. However, its duration is only 1 minute.

Divine favor and divine power are both combat spells that can improve your fighting power. Divine favor gives you luck bonuses. Divine power gives the effect of +6 to strength so its extremely useful before a boss fight. It also gives 7 temporary hp as well as to boost your BAB to an equivalent level fighter. The only downside is that they only last for 1 minute.

The remove fear clickie is very tricky to use. You cannot activate the clickie if you are feared so you need to use it before entering battle. In battle, it can be activated if your party members are feared thus allowing them to join back the fight. It has a long duration, 10 minutes, so its advisable to use them as soon as you enter the quest. Note that it provides a resistance towards fear but does not make you immune to fear effects, ie mummy fear. So keep some remove fear potions handy. Again this clickie can be replaced with the reaver's ring, obtainable from xorian cipher, which give you permanent fear immunity. However, its always good to have it around to help your party members. As Darth Sizzle mentioned, you can also get the Helm of Freewill (Fear Immunity and SR 17) from the Titan Raid (underwater chest, not raid loot).

Remove curse and remove disease clickie are often good to have as they remove the said effect. The remove disease clickie can be replaced with a disease immunity item but there is no such item for curses. they are extremely valuable, especially in the desert where the mummy can afflict you with a curse which can only be removed via a remove curse followed by a remove disease.

Neutralise poison gives you the ability to be immune to poison and also to cure posion. Due to its long duration of 7 minutes, it is often advisable to activate it before fights so that you are protected for the rest of the duration. It can be replaced with a poison proof item which affords you permanent poison immunity but nonetheless good to have around to help party members.

Lesser restoration is a very versatile status removal spell. It can remove 1d4 point of stat (ability, eg strength) damage or some spells like exhaustion, touch of idiocy. Do take note that with the addition of more undead and debuffing casters, it is now more prudent to carry less restoration potions. In addition, you may not activate a clickie should you become helpless.

Heroism and greater heroism are both battle buffs. Herosim gives you +2 to attack, saves and skill checks. It can be found on many items but if you want a better chance of getting one, its on the kundarak trooper shield which is the end reward for the threnal chain of quests.

Haste is as per the spell. Gives you faster movement, +1 to attack n ac. However, the duration of the clickie is extremely short, 30 seconds. So often its best used when you are in mid battle and your haste has run out and the arcane in your party is busy or being chased around.

Aid raises the hp of the user temporarily. In combat, hp deduction occurs from these hp first. The effect will last until the expiry of the spell or when the temporary hp are used up. Aid also gives bless and thus one clickie for two effects. The duration is 3 minutes

Stat buff increases the stat of a char by +4 for 3 minutes. They are actually the spells Bear's, Fox's, Cat's, Owl's, Eagle's and Bull's. The spells do not stack if you have a +4 or better item.

Shield of faith provides a deflection bonus to AC. The bonus afforded is +1 and is negated if you equipped a deflection item.

False Life stacks with Aid, Greater Heroism, even Divine Power's temporary hitpoints. It is useful to stack them before you know where's a huge battle in front of you. This affords you with a greater survivability.

Detect Secret Door helps locate secret doors if you don't have any good search skill. This spell can also be substituted with true seeing or the wand version.

Expeditious Retreat increases your movement by 25% in 1 min. Due to the short duration, it is much more effective using a striding item or a wand which may give up to 10 minutes duration.

Remove paralysis is great, you can use it to save your teammates or to get rid of slow or paralysis effects.

Prayer is a nice short-term boost you can throw in in the middle of a battle (+1 to your allies, -1 to your foes).

Rage is a great offensive buff. It gives a +2 to strength and consitution at the expense to -2 in AC. This increase in attributes will stack with items equipped. The increase in constitution also increases the hitpoints of the target.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Offensive Clickies

Solid fog allows the user to conjure up a spherical fog which slow movement of enemies within it. Use in conjuction with offensive spells such as wall of fire, cloudkill, the effect is increased as this makes the enemy stay in the area of effect of the offensive spell longer. As friendly forces are able to move freely within the fog, fighting in the fog is favorable. Note that some undead, especially mummies, seems to be immune to its effects.

Grease is an extremely hard spell to use. It causes both friendly and unfriendly forces to make a check in order to remain standing. If it is successful, your character will simply slide around the area of effect. If fallen, a balance check is needed to stand up. Grease is best used on a slope so that the direction of the slide can be accurately predicted. One best area to use the spell is in tangleroot at the spinning trap on the slope. hobgoblin clerics often stand behind the trap to cast at you. A grease on them will bring them into the trap. Despite the usefulness of the spell, most players collect grease clickies for the purpose of playing jokes on party members.

Web clickies lay down a web with which can trap mobs if they fail their save. Once webbed a successful strength is required to break free. This clickie is extremely in the lower level dungeons. In the higher levels, their effectiveness is severely limited by spell resistance and a low difficulty check.

Ray of Exhaustion is a very useful debuff against any target with no spell resistance. It serves to lower the strength of the target thus making it hit less often and less hard. This is especially useful versus red or purple named bosses as they do not have immunity against this spell.

Touch of Idiocy is extremely useful against enemy casters with no spell resistance. This spell lowers the mental faculties of the target, making it unable to cast spells.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Named Clickies

Greater heroism gives a +4 to attack, saves and skill checks and increase your hitpoint temporarily. It also gives you immunity to fear. I have only encountered it on planar gird, obtainable from xorian cipher. The temporary hitpoints can also be used to revive incapped party members.

Deathward is an extremely valuable spell to have, since now many mobs have the ability to cast very damaging negative spells such as whisperdoom's blight, deathshade's horrid wilting (both end bosses in L11 quests). It is essentially a protection from negative energy spell but unlimited amount of protect for the whole duration. However, its duration is only a couple of minutes. So far, the only item I've encountered with deathward is the visor of render guards from the tangleroot chain of quests end reward.

Raise dead can only be currently found in a named item ring of ancestors from the quest slavers of the shrieking mines. It gives you the ability to raise a dead party member once per rest.

Summon monster clickies are often found as end rewards of quest chains, ie penny whistle from threnal quest chain. It allows you to call up a monster to help you fight. Note that the monster has its own AI and will not be controlled by you neither does it attack the party unless the player summoning leaves the instance.

Spell Storing is an effect found on the spell storing ring which is a rare drop in the desert adventure area. This ring carries a total of 3 charges, each restoring 25 spellpoints.

True Seeing can only be found on the staff of the seer from the quest bring me the head of ghola fan. it gives the target true seeing for 9 minutes, allowing the target to see through illusions namely blur and displacement.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Raid Clickies

Madstone rage is an effect found on the madstone boots from the reaver raid. When activated, you gain a +4 to strength, constitution and natural armor class. This attribute increase stack with rage and items thus improving your performance. The side effect of this spell is you will be unable to cast spells or activate any spell like effects ie wands, scrolls and clickies.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

My fighter is having a blast with all the clickies on him. He helps the arcanes and cleric by providing some magical support. Helping them save spell points and being self sufficient makes them recognise that he is an extremely valuable member of the team who contributes way more than others. This has translated to him often being the top priority in recieving heals.

Note: A medicore player can become a good player with the right buffs at the right time. A bad player will simply still remain bad. Clickies afford you to be more of a team player. If you are simply using them so that you can zerg then get into trouble or worse still get the party into trouble, then in the eyes of the other members, you are still a lousy player.

Thanks for the article. I don't mind admitting that DDO is my first ever MMO experience and it was not until recently that i realized the importance of clickies. I tended to focus on aquiring just one item to fit a particular character slot, usually something to improve an attribute or skill. My primary is a fighter and since I started making an effort to collect and use clickies, my fighter can hang with groups/quests 1-2 levels higher with no problem. Clerics luv me because I'm not a mana drain, overall survivability goes up, and with clickies like Detect Secret Door, the value and utility of my toon has greatly increased. Now I always keep my eyes open for the clickies up for auction.
Also among my favorites are Aid, Rage, and False Life.

I am surprised to see no mention on Solid Fog clickies as well. They have become invaluable to me and mine in instances with no caster nearby. Difference in life/death many times.

Yes I have left out a few as such as aid and solid fog. this is by no means a comprehensive guide. My ftr has almost 2 inventory pages of clickies. Some never used offensively, ie grease (thou i like seeing party member fall when standing around, especially when waiting in threnal :D ) Some are extremely hard to get, ie ring of ancestor (1/1 raise dead available from shrieking mine).

If you have found it useful please give it a favorable rating. Many thanks for taking time to read the guide

You might want to mention that Aid is favorable to bless as Aid not only gives you hit points but it will also give you a bless portion as well.(same thing as bless). Another advantage is that it is a level 2 spell which means the caster level is level so instead of only lasting a minute like the bless clickie will Aid will last for a full three minutes.

2 coppers from a clicky fanboy:

False Life: stack with Aid, Greater Heroism, even Divine Power's Temporal HP. Useful to stack them before you know where's a huge battle in front of you.

Ray of Exhaustion: Very useful against any strong but no spell resistance target, like Huge Earth Elemental, some kind of high level giant, and so on.

Spell Storing: Well ... needless to say, you can DV yourself :p And it can only be found on Ring of Spell Storing right now.

Detect Secret Door: spot secret door if you don't have any good search skill (or you don't have time to do it in a mess)

True Seeing: Useful to against monster which has blur/displacement effect, also useful for detect secret door. Only available from a unique quartstaff.

Expeditious Retreat: while it only increase your movement by 25% in 1 min, still useful to cast it in front of a big battle, or travel in encounter zone (but not much useful once you got striding item with 20% or so)

Touch of Idiocy: Useful if you are a CC-spec caster. No saving throw but has to bypass target SR (so don't try it against anything with SR).

--

the usage of summon monster was not mean to help you kill thing -- it's mean to help you draw extra aggro, or even spot hiding enemy. sometimes it can even help you active some rune pad.

And about Remove Fear ... No, it doesn't provide fear immunity. Remove fear only provide extra save against fear-like spell/ability and remove your original fear state.

Divine Power's (clicky version) has the duration of 42sec.

As a Ranger who has often soloed things, I find the following to be of great use to me (and not already mentioned).

I have a Belt of Web(3), very nice for filling a doorway before you open it.

Shield of Faith Gauntlets and Goggles

I also stock a range of Stat Clickies (Owls Wisdom, Fox's cunning, etc for popping some runes where my stats plus that 4 point buff is enough to open them (I have a base 14 INT so +4 gets it to 18 and a +4 INT item costs a fortune, while a Fox's Cunning clickie cost me 10K).

In addition to those things mentioned here and elsewhere in this thread... Aid/rage clickies are really good for reviving fallen (incapped) comrades. Think about it... when was the last time you actually kept healer's kits on your tank? Well, with Aid/rage... you can pick up the cleric, etc w/o having to make a successfull roll. All you need is a clickie. Remember, however, these are temp hp's and they'll need to heal/pot/wand themselves asap, but it does come in handy, espc at low lvls and in dire situations where things go awry... just my two copper on some often underused items.

According to the latest update:

(1)Ring of Spell Storing was no longer drop (before Turbine "fix" it)

(2)Deathward now last longer even from the clicky. The deathward click item from tangleroot now has 7 mins duration.

(3)There's new Symbol of Fear click item from LoTD II. But personally I did not get it for my character yet so it's hard to judge it right now.

I carry about 12 clicks worth of Slow Trap on my Ranger. It takes a while to place them in the right spot but can be very handy way of setting up an ambush and it makes soloing much easier (particularly with 4 solid fogs and 6 webs and a bunch of other CC clickies).

My main is a barbarian, and you can't use a clickie while you are raged. I use a bears endurance and aid clickies just before raging on a big fight, but if I forget until after I rage I have to wait until the rage wears off first.

Just something to be aware of if you like barbarians.

...Bless can improve your saves, attack rolls and also to remove certain spell effect such as doom spell. However, the duration is only 1 minute, so its best used before a major battle. Please note that bless does not stack with bard song and there have been reports that bugs may pop up...

Bless removes Bane, not Doom - Doom is a fear affect and as such is removed by remove fear

...remove fear clickie is very tricky to use. You cannot activate the clickie if you are feared so you need to use it before entering battle. In battle, it can be activated if your party members are fear thus allowing them to join back the fight. It has a long duration, 10 minutes if I remember correctly so its advisable to use them as soon as you enter the quest. Note that the fear immunity afforded does not protect you against mummy fear. So keep some remove fear potions handy. Again this clickie can be replaced with the reaver's ring, obtainable from xorian cipher, which give you permanent fear immunity. However, its always good to have it around to help your party members...

Could also get the Helm of Freewill (Fear Immunity and SR 17) from the Titan Raid (underwater chest, not raid loot)

Hi all was thinking if you are trying to help people learn the power of clickies no only should you include what clickies are out there but where they can be found. I've been playing since beta and could only name maybe where 2 or 3 of those clickies are. Mainly because if im lucky i get to run 1 quest a night and hardly ever run the same quest repeatedly so wouldn't know where it was if it was a rarer drop. Me im a wizard so only need a few clickies for the most part but a for a new person this information would be invaluable. Good luck all.

Many of the clickis mentioned have potion and scroll alternatives.

FOR example- If you are a cleric you can get 100stacks of bless scrolls etc. so taht you can cast at ease without impacting Mana, but at that point most any cleric spell can be found in scrolls or wands if you've got the cash. I never do, so clickis are the better way to go for saving coin.

HOWEVER pots have longer durations, often are stronger in effect as well. They are also easier/faster to use. Same for the scrolls, depending. Anyway people who want to make their toon a little buffer and have the plat should consider loading up potion stacks to use as it is more convenient and usual more effective than the clickis. That said watch for clickis with high caster level.

I break breakables and pick up everything, a lot of resistance pots drop, I've never bought any but use them often. I just collect them up and pass them around between my toons. I also use a few resistance clickis as well, but mostly all the pots you'll ever need drop from breakables at lower levels.

For me its a bit of a pain sometimes to manage the inventory and swapping and keeping space for all the different clickis. So pots are a little more convenient at times.

Nice guide. A few minor additions:

1. Resist energy clickies are useful for when you get burning blood - just clicky a fire and acid resist rather than pestering the cleric. Cold resist is useful for attacking those blackguards with cold shield.
2. You don't include raid clickies such as The Battle Coin, Mossweave cloak, Staff of Arcane Power, Jerky and others I'm sure (details can be found on the loot thread).
3. Prayer is useful to cast just before you make an important UMD check (such as use your raise dead scroll on the cleric) since it boosts your skills by 1.

Garth

been busy for a while but holidays coming soon so i can update this with more accuracy n to add more stuff in

to address Garth issues,

1. resist clickies while useful do not provide sufficient protection as the quest level increases. their duration of 3 min is also extremely short. in addition, when you are low in lvl, the items u get mostly have a single charge and when u get the 3 charges item, your party members should be able to cast a 20 point resist.

2. raid clickies are now getting rare due to decreased loot and thus less assessible. they are also bound and thus non tradeable.

3. prayer is semi-broken, to use it in town, u need to run to the nearest pvp area, activate it before using the umd. also duration is for 30 seconds.

Web clickies lay down a web with which can trap mobs if they fail their save. Once webbed a successful strength is required to break free. This clickie is extremely in the lower level dungeons. In the higher levels, their effectiveness is severely limited by spell resistance and a low difficulty check..

Clickie is extremly...?
extremly usefull mabe?

Clickies of Command Undead, and Halt Undead are *extremely* effective against skeletons-including the mages even in the desert.
They have no save vs the spell. Unlike all the other CC clickies, these remain useful at higher levels.

A Haggle buff setup : Heroism + Eagle's Splendor (plus your Haggle gear & VoTM) can help your economy.

Great post! The only clickie I regularly use and don't see listed here is an Invisibility clickie. Any character that can't cast it has a clickie and it really helps in a lot of situations, most often going in to pick up stones of the rest of the party...

I know I am raising a dead thread but this is a great topic and it looks like it could use some updating.

I recently pulled boots of stinking cloud as an end reward on a run of water works. This could be considered Solid Fog "light" and is very useful for ranged attackers as it punishes enemies that get too close allowing you to kite through it which both sickens your enemies and reduces their hit chance.

RIP clickies. We may never understand or know why you were killed, but you will always be in our hearts.

Here's to you, clickies. 2006-201?
