View Full Version : Looking for slow tactical players

Wow! I just noticed this part of the boards.

I'm a returning player from the beta and came back a couple of weeks ago.

The main reason I left in the first place was because most of the people I played with didn't fit my playstyle so I often had trouble finding groups.

I'm not really looking for a guild per say although not adverse to it with the right people. Anyway, I'd like to find some people to put on my friends list that would like to go very slowly while in dungeons.

So you know, I'm not very knowledgeable in D&D. I have a lot to learn. I have a Ranger level 3, and Bard level 3, and a Rogue level 4. Both the rogue and Bard were previous chars from before I left the first time and after getting my ranger to level 3 have just started playing the older chars again, so I'm definately a bit rusty. The Marketplace was as far as I'd got into the game before I left, so anything Marketplace on is new to me.

I have soloed everything but WW with the newer ranger and now in the Marketplace. I've done Redfang, Sunken Sewer, (with help from one other guy), and tried and died many times attempting Swiped Signet and also the quest where you need to find a library book in the Catacombs. So.. it's pretty simple.. I need help. I'm losing more XP than I'm getting lol.

Now I'm probably being to picky, but here is the type of players I'd like to find.

The group gets in a quest. Take some time and discuss everyones role in the quest before starting. Everyone goes into sneak mode. Perhaps send a ranger and rogue ahead of the group and scout out the area, as in my limited experience, so far anyway both have decent sneak skills. If not ambushed, report back to the rest of the group and decide how to best approach the situation and if possible disable traps ect. If the rogue and ranger are ambushed, see if the rogue can maybe sneak attack at least one of them and have the ranger at least dmg a couple of them before running like cowards back to the rest of the group. Of course communicating with each other the whole time, so the rest of the group is ready.

Once you have cleaned out an area and sure it's safe, then and only then, start smashing crates and whatnot, before continuing on. Again stop and discuss the best way of continuing either using the same type tactics, or new tactics figured out by the group as a whole. Once this is done, everyone back into sneak mode again. I mean as little as I know about D&D I do know that if for some reason in real life I was going into a dungeon and didn't know anything about it, I would want to go very cautiously whether I was a clumsy barbarion or not.

Now please don't misunderstand. I'm not saying these tactics are what should be used, just an idea. I'm on the Mabar server and my chars names are Fastolfe Ranger level 3, Gisgard rogue level 4, and Daneel Bard level 3. I could certainly create another char on another server if needed as well. I apologize for the long post, it's just that I have a whole lot of fun playing this game with the right people.

Greetings

I do not know if you have found anybodies yet but if you are still looking that is exactly what I am looking for too. Name the server and I will be there. Anybody else out there looking?

I'm not sure I've ever seen anybody play with tactics quite as deliberate as these.

I consider the group I play with a very good tactical group. Sneaking when necassary, discussing tactics when necassary, but never a full party discusion before and after every battle. Conversations tend to be "Anybody need anything special as far as buffs go" and "is everybody ready for me to open this door"

Most of the time, your just over-anylizing a fight if you stop to discuss every upcoming contact.

I wish you luck finding a group with the playstyle your looking for. If you have too much trouble, you can find me on Fernia playing Arpeggio(LV3 WF Bard) every now and then. Otherwise I'm on my much higher alts.

Happy Hunting!

It's possible this thread (http://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php?t=83246) could be what your looking for.

Well TBH, I'm not sure if what I had planned would work or even be effective. Maybe you don't need to be that cautious. As I said I don't know the game, or D&D that well. I'm certainly open to suggestions on how to best play and enjoy the game.

However many of the groups I get in go so fast I can't keep up with them! And I don't blame them. If you know a dungeon like the back of your hand, why bother going slowly?

However for someone like me, who doesn't know the dungeons, it kind of ruins the fun of playing when you're being told what to look out for, what to do ect.

I personally wish the dungeons were more randomized where no one knew exactly what was going to happen, but I would think at this point in the games development, that would be a very difficult thing to pull off.

I'm on the Mabar server Marika, so look me up if you feel like it, or let me know your server and maybe I could start a new char.

Everyone goes into sneak mode.

You are probably only going to find that if you play with specific groups like The Sublime (Thelanis PermaDeath Guild where it matters when you die - they are great group) or a medium to heavy RP team most likely..

Since you (and Marika) seem willing to switch servers check out the link below, I am trying to keep like minded player/teams together.

I'd be happy to be with a group like this, I'm not the biggest fan of going into a quest with 3 lvl 4 drow that run through just whacking with the attack button.

To the OP, this is how I have always envisioned playing the game and left soon after beta for the same reasons as well... That, and my PC sucked big time. Well now I find myself soloing most the time because the PUGs I do get run through trashing everything, spliting up and completing objectives. I get no feel for the quest & could not rerun it because it was such a blur I would be lost. I play on Sarlona, and run the guild "Drunken Pirates" with my brother. We are always on the look out for slower players to group with or join our TINY TINY guild.

I did a Monday night group a while back with the same intentions. I got married, have been busy with school and the group fell apart (mostly my fault for the aforementioned reasons). I haven't played in about a month with Christmas and my Honeymoon getting in the way and would love to do a group like the one you mentioned. As my schedule is, either a Monday night or Thursday night group (I live on the east coast also by the way) would be great and I have a friend who just started playing who would enjoy the same thing. If you're interested then let me know. Newbies are the best to do just such a group with since everyone has that same "sense of discovery" as if you were playing through an old AD&D module for the first time. I've been playing the WoW 10 day trial for the last few days since my wife switched to playing that game (it's much simpler for her and we have friends who play), but I freakin' hate it!!!! It's not the popularity of the game (I'm not one of those), but I just can't stand the style. I finally did a "dungeon" with some people I knew and man did that suck! No traps, no puzzles, no evenly-balanced party (I always think of classic D&D parties as a sort of A-Team kind of thing: everyone has their role), just "KILL!!" So I am ready for some real dungeon crawling again with some purposeful questing. Hit me up if you're still interested.

Hey all. Thanks for the replies.

If any of you play on the Mabar server please leave your in-game names here or PM so I can add you to my friends list. We can then can get together and do some questing. To the people that have left names I will add them tonight and look you guys up.

I have joined a guild since I posted here, however I'm most certainly still interested in this type of gameplay. The guild I'm in is a great bunch of people, but most have been playing since beta and know the quests very well.

While it's great to be involved in a guild, I'd still love to quest with some folks who don't know the dungeons, and as the guild I'm in is fairly small, there's plenty of opportunity to do so.

Again, thx.

I don't have a character on Mabar, but I'll make one to go wherever. Last time we had everyone pick a character type that they really wanted to play and we built the group dynamic around those choices. We made sure that all of the important slots were filled so that we were able to heal, open all the locked chests/doors, disable all of the traps and kill all of the baddies. If you're interested in starting from scratch then let me know. I have 2 other people (real life friends) interested in a Monday night game from about 8-11 p.m. EST.

Now I can not say everytime we in the MAC play a more traditional PnP style, but we tend to handle things that way. Follow the link in my sig to our forums and check us out. We are on Khyber usually. We have quite a few PnP type folks who appreciate slow play and hate to spoil quests for newer folks by rushing through them.

Any of STP types (slow tactical players) on argonessen? Add any of my alts to your friend's list if you're looking for someone to group with.

I'm always open to as many people who want to take the time to explore a dungeon, do all the content, stick together (unless its tactically required to surge head and take out an enemy spell caster).

I'm not particularly looking for guild groups right now. I've been there, done that, and discovered that for all their good intentions, its impossible for a guild to be sure every individual really wants to play a slow tactical style. So now I'm going to try the friends route.

I'm often deleting characters and trying new ones, but the names and levels of my current main and alts should be in my sig, and I'll be updating that as required.

Happy hunting.

Hi Olgeezer,
I myself am new to D&D and spend most of the time 'running round in circles'. I am paladin/fighter lvl 3 and have completed most quest in Harbor on the Argonnessen server. I am currently trying to get through the Cerulean Hills, but everytime I 'party-up' the run wild and everyone dies.
I am a newbie at D&D and have a hearing impairment so voice chat is hard mostly I need text help.
I would be interested in joining the group if you would have me.
I am "Shames" on the argonnessen server in Stormreach Harbor and have Harbormaster seal

Well for me if it is the first time, then yes everyone stays back let the sneaks do their job set up traps, glitter, hippie dome, web and pull the mobs back.

Most quests my lowbies are doing I have done a lot of times. So, many people I am with knows what is happening and we already setting up the pull area with our little traps.

Most quests I run we already know what to expect, that is why I love the new content.

This is EXACTLY the style of play I have been looking for and on my server too. PM me with details or look me up when I'm online. I am also new to the game. I would be willing to start another toon if my main's level is too high. Thanks and hope to run, sorry walk with you online.

For those interested in slow tactical play, check out this thread for a possible persistent group. Would overlap the STP genre significantly.

I've got one serious nibble, even if we only got three or four that would be better than soloing. And heck, maybe three people with caution can do as much as six people running full speed!

Been playing since release .. and the only way I've found that can force such a playstyle on experienced players is permadeath. It's not gonna happen otherwise.

Any of STP types (slow tactical players) on argonessen? Add any of my alts to your friend's list if you're looking for someone to group with.

I play on Argonessen and so would perfer to PLAY the game instead of just playing for loot and xp. Anybody that has played paper D&D would enjoy getting into the story of the adventure or quest.

The reason they are there, the thing they are there to accomplish. Personally I think the sounds and environment of the various dungeons is super cool and I enjoy taking my time.

Although I am a higher level than what many who have replied to this post are, (just leveled to 12) I would LOVE to find a group of slower players, and savor every quest for the fun it has been designed to be.

Look me up, "Proxim" (not just Dwolf, but every like-minded player on Argonessen) I am probably online now as you are reading this :)

hi there! i was looking for exactly the same thing. a kinda 3D table D&D.

this game is perfect for that kinda play... i remember going trough red fang for the first time guided by a random nice guy i met... the sound tracks/efects/music are insanely worked on! i have not heard such good audio in a game before.

but thats not all...

there was these very high ceiling, and as i looked up, there were all these web, and as i looked , i realised there were bodies in there. and not just coocoons, you could see the body parts on some... i was mesemerised by how this game rocked.

but i have only found groups that grinds all the time, it sucks. its like going to the museum, runing to the snack bar and runing back out without looking at anything.

i am playing on argoness and risia, but it seems all you players are on mabar, so il go create a character there right now...

And another Shameless plug.

Not sure if some of the slow tactical players realize it but a lot of what you like about the game can be had in a Permadeath guild. For obvious reasons mosr PD players are slower and more tactical. I'm putting together a new PD no-twink guild now on Argonnessen. Check the signature.

Ditto

I don't think it would be that difficult to implement really. Random spawning mobs, mobs that respawn. Traps that randomly spawn in various locations throughout the dungeon. All these things would make the game more challenging and keep peoples interest longer. Who really wants to run the exact same quest over and over again when everything is the same as the time before? Yeah I know there are lots of quests out there that I haven't done yet but most groups repeat the same ol quest, be it for the loot or the xp.

That is alot of what I was looking for. Ecxpt I wanted to start a whole guild of like minded people. But I had no luck what so ever in finding anyone so I figured they just weren't out there. Send me a PM or something would love to hook up with some people wo are new and enjoy the adventure as much as I do.

=) As of now I play a rogue on Agro, but I plan on making a cleric soon adn will make him on any server long as I have some people to play with.

I can't join your guild becuase of the whole looting thing.

Also why can't people buy potions.
Anyways this is not the thread to discuss so I apologies.

You mean if you look back in history through your Patron Quest Log you have  undone entries *Aghast*!

Obviously each group in my guild has variations based on the individual Team Lead/Officers rules, but it is pretty safe to say most teams pride themselves on meeting their regular comrades each week and leaving No Quest Undone!

I'm not sure why it is that most people don't play more tactically.

I'm not sure if it's because of the video game influence out there, and everyone is ADHD. It can't be because we're lacking old time PnP'ers - there seem to be enough of us on here.

Proxim - i know this is probably a bit late -but if you check back on here sometime i apologize I never got back to you. Things have been shifting for me all through the the last several months. The last six weeks especially have been pretty much impossible for me to log on to play. I'm hoping that as time goes on I can get back on some sort of regular play schedule.

Anyone else on Argo looking for STP - i have one higher level (12) character, 3 mid level (in the 6 to 8 range), and some temporary newbie characters that are just holding names until i can finally unlock 1750 favor.

It would be cool too to find a group to team/party with on a more consistant level.
