View Full Version : Please change Scroll-use so they can be activated without equipping (Like pots)

Scrolls need to be made like Pots, so they can be used without actually equipping them. This would address several issues.....

Reason #1: Buff/Modify weapon can't be self targeted because it needs to be in main hand and MANY weapons can't be held off-hand (I'm looking at YOU 'Deadly')

Reason #2: Equipping a scroll in an emergency to help/save a party member (or yourself) can be extremely difficult if not impossible during a fight. beasties aren't terribly understanding when you put away your weapon to read stuff

Reason #3: Lag can prevent the re-equip of your weapon, and fighting off Reaper Mobs and critters with a sheet of binder paper really bites. I've have several instances where I've frantically tried to re-equip my weapon, with the scroll in question steadfastly refusing to leave my hand for nearly 20 seconds...

Eh, I think being able to read a scroll without first equipping it doesn't sit right.

Also, I'm not familiar with Reason #1, but 2 and 3 aren't valid reasons for any kind of a change. Setting hotkeys for the weapon swap and targeting that are fast and easy for you to use solves both of these problems imo.

I would not like to see this change implemented. Scrolls allow for higher level spells than potions, and they must be held to be read, and so there should be this specific differentiation in how convenient they are to use.

To balance the power of scrolls vs potions, the casting time can be bumped up (more time to read) and may also be a function of the scroll’s caster level.

I'm against any change that both creeps power and reduces differentiation between classes and builds.

How would this reduce differentiation between classes & builds? In that reqard, nothing would change. Currently, anyone who trains in MIU and is high enough level can use a scroll, everyone uses a scroll the same way. How would that change? The only difference is people who can currently use a scroll, would finally be able to self-target as well.....

Or was your point that you like players not being able to self-target for something they've spent the effort & skill needed to cast?

For me, its the whole "Equip like a wand" but then "Use like a potion" where you have to equip it, and then use the hot key again to activate the scroll. Pressing the attack button just causes the character to weakly punch, that makes scrolls absolutely useless for most things.

Potions vs Scrolls = Potions do not have arcane spell failure and do not need a UMD check. Potions also come in higher caster levels than scrolls. bad interface is not a balancing function

We can inscribe scrolls without equipping them. Why not be able to use them?

Yeah I'm in favor of this idea....all it's really eliminating is the arbitrary clicking to re equip your weapon. Aside from a few edge cases like black razor stacks, that's just a button tax.

The utility and limitations of scrolls remain the same whether they're one click or three. You still have to pass a umd and concentration.check, you still have casting animation where you're not attacking.

The only real argument I can see is scrolling item enchantments like elemental weapons...but you can already do that with 1H weapons so it can't be that broken

I really like how wands and scroll function in this game thematically. I hope it never gets changed. Not everything has to be optimized for speedrunning.
