View Full Version : What's up with jumping?

Recently I've had a lot of trouble with jumping forward. This happens a lot in water but also on land. My character jumps up but not forward, even with good jump skill, whether on foot or mounted. It has killed my character on Hardcore. Did something change? How can I fix this problem?

Well the spacebar is only an 'up movement' when you hit it. You need to also use your forward (W) button at the same time as the spacebar to go up and forward.

No she's right, something has changed. I am also often having the problem when jumping and moving that the jump processes separately from the movement. I started noticing this last week or maybe the week before.
I do a lot of jumping on the move and I hadn't seen this particular problem happen. Pressing jump while moving often causes my character to stop moving and jump in place.

It could be that the jump score listed in the skills list is not the actual jump score.
Sometimes a spell's buff to it keeps hanging and the the figure shown is actually wrong, in reality it's way lower.
Also, player's like to grieve other player's on HCL by casting disenchant on them.

It has nothing to do with the Jump skill level. It has to do with how the jump command behaves when you are moving. Prior to whatever caused this change if you were moving forward and pressed jump you would get a smooth arcing jump as you moved. Now often instead you get an awkward hop that cancels forward momentum. That is something that is new, likely a bug that got inserted during all the prancing about over cooldowns. Clearly SSG wanted to do something about how actions interacted in a chain and my guess is that they accidentally inserted a break somewhere in the process.
It's possible that something else happened but it is really easy to see when you move forward and press the jump key.

I have noticed my keyboard not working from time to time like it ignores keys for a second or so. I will jump and run. Or use a key for a clicky and it just doesn't work. I have heard others complain of spells not going off. I wonder if it is the same thing. I have blood tribute and I usually have to tap the key repeatedly until I see the extra hp appear. Moving, jumping, nearly everything. I pay very close attention when I do anything to make sure the something happened before I assume it. I sort of assumed it was just lag where I click the key and the message doesn't make it to the server. This is just how the game seems to play all the time for me.

It happens on regular servers too, so not being griefed by other players. Also it happens while mounted, when your jump is maxxed out.

This is it exactly! Thank you for describing it much better than I did.
One thing I've noticed since making my first post and playing around with it is that this effect happens most often when I'm either in water or running across an uneven surface, going uphill, etc.

All key presses have issues. 1 out of 3 times I press a key and see it highlight itself on the the UI toolbar, so it is acknowledging being pressed, but nothing happens in game. This is even after waiting many seconds between any key or movement activity. It’s borderline game breaking since it consumes resources and puts the activity on cooldown, so you don’t cast that spell, get that heal, make that jump, etc. when the game knows it should happen, but blocks it.

I also noticed that.
Press keyboard shortcut for skill, skill goes on 1 second cool down, does not execute, after 1 second you can press it again (that's for skills with 6+ second cool down)
Jump is as wonky as before. Often you jump forward, your toon jumps up and then sometimes shoots forward sometimrs jumps as if you have jump penality, and sometimes it goes normal...

I have noticed this as well. I wonder if it also had something to do with the way they made adjustments to movement in water, since that was a spot where they would have been touching code that could interact with player movement in general. Regardless, I agree there is some weirdness in spots related to movement that I know were not around prior to U56/U57.
On a different note, I have noticed that it's easier to hit monsters who are running away (I.E. You cast a ground DOT like consecration, the monster runs to get out of it). I swear it's now easier to whack them in the butt while they're starting to get away. Before it felt like they entered some weird state where they were not honoring collision detection.

From what I can tell, it should like you're trying to tumble while moving.
There was a recent change where if you use the Block key while moving, it will now put you into a tumble animation. If your tumble is less than 1 and/or you have fewer than 1 rank, you perform a short hop. Which would explain the short hop animation while moving aspect.
Now, what I'm not sure of is if we've just confused the jump and block buttons or jump is triggering a block or you're hitting jump and block at the same time and the block is winning out. So, I guess... check your keybinds and button presses to see if my theory is correct.
I haven't been able to reproduce your experience. :(

The only keys I'm using in these situations are W and the spacebar. I do not have tumble bound to any key since I never use it. I am, however, a jumping fool and jump all over the place for whatever reason strikes my fancy. None of my keys have changed, none of my behavior has changed. The only change is in the jump action itself.

This is a problem for me too.
Pressing movement keys does not register, sometimes I have to press a key 2-3 times before it registers. Not just forward, but sideways and turning too.

I agree with this. There's something going on & not just with jumps. It's annoying.

I wondered if it has something to do with the cool down function that broke chaining abilities.
I have just gotten in the habit of forward movement then spacebar to jump.
I will admit is does feel strange though.

How about your ranks/amount of tumble?
My top guess is still that is where the bug is. Granted jump shouldn't be triggering a tumble, but could at least explain the correlation and perhaps why its impacting some but not all users.

I think you dont understand. The problem is that the game does not react to pressing movement keys.
It is not just with jump, and it is not just moving forward, but sideways and turning too.

Is it possible your keyboard is dirty / old / dying?

That, or possibly an indication of low battery if it's a wireless device. All of these needs to be eliminated really before we can go point fingers at SSG.

In my defense, there is likely more than one issue being reported here. The one I'm theorizing against is from this snippet
It has nothing to do with the Jump skill level. It has to do with how the jump command behaves when you are moving. Prior to whatever caused this change if you were moving forward and pressed jump you would get a smooth arcing jump as you moved. Now often instead you get an awkward hop that cancels forward momentum.
Which the op said this was the exact issue. An awkward hop that cancels the forward momentum sounds exactly like trying to tumble forwards with no tumble ranks/skill.
So, if a character, that cleanly jumps (lag, junky keyboards, and accidental bumps of the block key aside) and has no ranks in or has less than 1 tubmle is indeed triggering the tumble when jumping. Then that'd be something go on. Especially if everyone reporting movement issues has no tumble.
As for your issue, no idea. Randomly not moving in the direction they desired at a higher frequency since the last update... that's a tough one to nail down. Could be a bug, corruption in the installed game files, junk in the keyboard, faults in the usb connection, or even lag spikes. Tough to tell so far.

I'm guessing this is the case here.
There is an instance, where as you are about to land, if you jump again as you land, you can lift again for another clean jump without issue, often one of the faster ways of travelling safely.
The issue is, there's a very close time frame where if you attempt to jump again but you mistime it, you will instead "stick" onto the floor and make a half attempt at a jump (that appears like a "hop") but never really leave the ground. This is likely the one that is being talked about in the thread rather than the tumble hop.
However, this issue would have had zero bearing on arrested movement, which usually only happens when you have a really poor connection (which then rubber bands you so that should be fairly evident), or as suggested earlier; is due to failing power (low battery) on a wireless device, where keystrokes are not being sent.
We would really need all affected players to confirm they are not on wireless devices or have fully charged ones or tested with wrired units to be able to begin to look elsewhere (such as towards DDO being the culprit). As if the issue really was DDO, the issue should be more widespread and noticed by now.

No.
When I started having these problems I thought it was old keyboard as you say and actually bought a new a few months ago. So my keyboard is brand new, it did not help.

You could be right. For the record, I have problems with jump-forward, but also all the other movement buttons. Forward, backwards, sideways and turning.

Yes, this has been happening to me for quite a time now. I press a key and it looks like its been pressed, even clicks and nothing happens. Somethings up here.
