The filters in DDO are absolutely ridiculous.

There's an option to disable the chat filter.

Sure, but why on earth would the chat filter censor the word "Scrolls"??

I can think of 1 indecent word that starts with "scro". That is my guess as to why. Chat filter seems to be being overly picky.
The chat filter filters words in multiple languages.
The word "dou-che" just means "shower" in French, but it's still censored by the bot even when you're speaking in French to people.
(it did make it funny when a friend repeatedly said "I'm going to &%!"/$")

I hate this. I've always hated this. It's outright silly.
I always turn off the filter, and recommend to everyone to do the same. However the filter still goes too far imo.
This game is officially rated T for Teen due to blood, violence, alcohol reference, and suggestive themes. And yet the filer is on overdrive, as if G or "E for everyone" is still too risky for it.
When it's censoring not just normal words, but it's censoring the game itself (which it does often), that should be a sign that it's over-tuned and needs to be re-evaluated to be less restrictive.

I'm going to have to start calling people I don't like "shower bags".

I've always held the belief that the filter was a necessity for the T for Teen rating. Kind of like how movies can only have one F bomb if they want to get a PG-13. That's also why SSG né Turbine gave us the option to turn the filter off if we were so inclined. They made it our choice to see the naughtiness, thus clearing them of liability if/when; keeping their hands clean and the games' rating safe.
I could very easily be wrong, and I've never bothered to ask or look into it. Just made sense to me, so I made it head-cannon.
But yeah, "scrolls" is a silly one. The game is rife with unintentional comedy - this being just the latest example to toss on the heap. :)

Yeah, how about making it a Gerund? Bigsby's not included.

Only one "s" in Bigby's.
I point it out because "Bigby" is likely a copyright so in order to use it properly in D&D, it must be spelled correctly.

i always have filter off, turned it on out of curiosity, i tried for the lol.
the problem for some reason is definitely "scro". i tried scroll, croll, roll, scrol, scro, scr, etc etc.
final test, like, i typed oihfhsscrogfuigihd (pressed random stuff and then copypasted here) and the result in chat is @#$%&*!@#$%&*!@#$%
take "scro" away and all the rest is displayed fine
no idea if it means something in some language or in some slang (i'm no english speaker, sorry if i am not supposed to write scro, in case let me know please). anyway it is weird :)

I haven't checked lately, does it still censor the name of D&D game mechanic for overcoming spell resistance?

Except that (the last time I checked, which was this morning) ESRB T for Teen (what DDO is labelled as) does allow for certain "naughty" words to be used and be uncensored. E10+ which is more restrictive still allows for some words that the DDO filter bans. Even E allows the word "****". And that's not even considering the Scunthorpe problem (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scunthorpe_problem) being brought up here (where innocent words that are not "bad" are being censored due to specific letter combinations). I mean, as much as I wish DDO was M for mature, the rating system is not 18+, Mature, everything else. Teen is in the middle. There are 2 whole categories under it!
Though it does look like SOME words have been white listed (just checked in game, in a solo guild's chat)
Spell Penetration is finally clear.
Bastard Sword is finally clear.
Hell is clear.
Ball (singular) is clear (the plural version is censored)
Abishai is clear (but is still banned from the guild message of the day)
Circumstance is clear in chat but is still banned from the guild message of the day.
Spice is clear in chat but is still banned from the guild message of the day.
Guardian is clear (yes, at one point this too was censored)
Can't we be consistent? Can't we actually be T for teen? I know that some parents allow their children to play, and that is awesome, but that doesn't (shouldn't) change the rating. Yes, be mindful when you know you're around kids, but censorship for children in mediums that are not E should be up to the parents to allow/disallow. They are letting their children play a T for teen game, it should be expected that they will see some slightly stronger language (imo at least).
Even if it's been decided that despite the games rating, chat will still be more uber-censored, I'm still blown away that scroll and scrolls are not white listed. At least stamp out the scunthorpe problem!
Heck, Japan and Japanese are censored! Everyone who lives in Japan can't answer the question "where are you from" because, "think of the children!!"?
*facepalm*

You would think the filter could at least ignore game items and only apply to stuff people typed. Though it still would do too much.

The more being censored, the more people turn it off. Chat filter approaches useless in this regard. Every time a particular guildmate logs on and someone says "Hi @#$%&*!" (His name is Brandon)

"Coronation Shield" paste to the chat
(Party:): [Party] Pokomi: @#$%&*!@#$%&*!@#$%&*!@#$%&*!@#$%&*!@#$%&*! Shield<\Examine>
This is broken for me I have kids (2 and 14) and that's much more worse than not censoring

I doubt the filter was created by any of the DDO companies although they could whitelist some, but is it really a problem?

Note: for anyone that doesn't know, if you put your settings the way you want them, before you to your /ui layout save [name] it does save your game settings as well as your ui locations so you won't have to keep disabling the chat filter for each TR / new character - you can just load it in.
