I think they probably let us know as soon as they knew. I imagine, they were having internal discussions about how to handle the issue. Once they made the decision to go quickly, Cordo probably told us as soon as he could.

I'm right at the end of a quest and I see '30 seconds log out now', I immediately hit a special ability and based on its time remaining as my screen froze and I got a popup saying I was booted from server the actual time they gave us was like 12-15 seconds at most.

Thoughtful developers would give a minimum of 10 actual minutes warning for people to wrap things up or decide they don't have time to finish and thus save 99% of their audience the hassle. Just some simple deliberate forethought about what the customer experience is like.

Most other games I have played they gave 30 minute warnings.

Is it a huge deal? No, but it really rubs a nerve every time they do this. And they can't really afford to be rubbing nerves the way things have gone around here lately.

Seems there is a pandemic of people taking names on hardcore. It is almost as if they made a list of all the names they liked, but couldn't come up with on their own. 5 years the same name, then this season its taken like instantly. Almost as if they were waiting with nothing better to do.

What is really infuriating especially on hardcore is that they told us to be prepared for downtime this evening and then shut things down at 5PM (server time) which is not exactly "evening". So many of us in the middle of dungeons were relying on SSG's specific comment that the downtime would be later.

Yes it was a major bug. Yes the sooner they fixed it the better, No I am not complaining about the downtime or how early the downtime was.

But after encouraging us to start things that would be over well before "evening" couldn't they have given us 5 minutes warning to get to safety?

Someone really should have a long and frank conversation with the Operations Manager at SSG.

A 10 minute (or even a 5 minute) warning would have been better and I'm pretty sure not that many more raid bosses would have been killed and that much more raid loot awarded because of that extra time.

Walked around Stormreach for a bit before getting a tell from a Turbine DM. They told me I had to change my name and also how to do it.

I wasn't paying attention to the chat at the time and missed their ultimatum.

The next thing I know, my toon's first name was changed to "Drit."

Boy, was I ****ed. :D

It kinda' depends... We don't know what the bug was. If the bug was for example, "when casting invisibility the character data becomes irrevocably corrupt resulting in full loss of character and all past lives" then maybe an immediate shutdown would be the thoughtful thing to do.

Just saying: Your name may be somewhat known, well known, famous (or infamous) on your server, but no one on other servers may have ever heard of it.

I'm pretty lucky, because the names I usually take are fairly unconventional, and I have never had another person on hardcore having already taken "my" name.

But let's face it: Quite a few names that people imagine to be incredibly clever and original are variations on classic characters from literature, movies, anime, comics etc.

I know that the leader of Death Smile has had someone grab "Mary" 2 seasons running, and it does seem odd that someone would do that, but honestly, there is a small chance that someone quite innocently took the Mary name because (and this is going to sound out there) their name is... Mary.

I would not worry if someone took "my" name that I use to post in the forums (I can't imagine if anyone might even be able to tell me what work of literature it is a slightly backwards allusion to).


All I am saying is your grievance (while obviously pretty important to you) is perhaps not an intentional slight, and even if it is, well, it's not like there is some sort of copyright infringement case you can make in a court of law.

But, since it looks as if we are going to have an extra few hours, consulting with a lawyer might very well occupy some time you'd otherwise spend spinning wheels here ;)

A good lawyer would say - first try to work it out quickly and with no legal fees by stating what the name is and see if whoever took it might be less attracted to it than you are, and perfectly willing to give it up. Most if not all of the good ones actually have the client's interest in mind and aren't just grinding for legal fees. I speak as somewhat of an expert in the area.

Thanks, I made a human favoured soul, not sure how beginner friendly it is, but they seem like they can heal and fight decently. I maxed out cha, then spread around to mostly Con, Wis, and a little Str. Not sure thats a good strategy or not...

I jokingly pronounce his name as Yeets, but maybe. He must have crit failed a disable device, and then the code went haywire. But I was given some GREAT advice courtesy of steam for those who could not logout in time, one moment.

If you disconnect and think there is ANY chance your toon was in possible danger, do NOT simply log the same toon back into the same place. Log another toon in 1st, or if you can, log in the hall of heroes to GET OUT of the trouble spot. Even on reaper, you can reenter the quest since you didn't "exit". Many a player not doing this (me) has logged out only to log back in and find themselves DEAD."

For those of us who did not logout, we may have to make a new character, and then logout and login to the main. I am keeping them in case I am dead, and have to redo.
