I was trying to think of ways to improve the game for new players (after watching TheLazyPeon ddo review on youtube).

players as hirelings:
One of the biggest issues for me is that I don't feel comfortable posting/hosting a dungeon crawl if I don't know the dungeon. Perhaps others feel this way? Although, if I were paying for the service of a player as a hireling (this is more of a psychological change over what we currently have), then I'd feel more comfortable, expecting the other player to be a bit more patient with me or maybe even have full knowledge of the dungeon, since we'd negotiated a fee for their service. The fee for their services could be plat or shards or points toward some cosmetic(s) or some trainer badge or maybe a choice of crafting ingredients from the bajillions of collectibles this game has. And maybe fee is automatically paid at dungeon completion. I like most of our dungeons and would run them for fun...and with reaper xp, I'm getting something out of helping another player run the dungeon...but if you're at cap then it's hard to justify helping out a player that is running on normal/hard/elite, plus a vet player may not wan to join a normal/hard/elite dungeon for fear they may dominate the dungeon and make it less fun for the noob, but if the noob was asking for it...then maybe ok. (again this is mostly psychological).

build chat:
I don't know if this is a new chat channel, or a bar you go to that enables this chat, or maybe it's in all bars (but chat is not limited to the specific bar that you are in)...but the basic idea is a players can post build questions and get other player feedback in game. And I know there are a lot of chat options now that could be used for this...but, the issue is they aren't being used and/or they aren't known by enough people...especially the new player. when you ride into a bar your mount is suppressed, perhaps using a similar mechanizim, when you come into a bar area maybe a new window pops up: "Bar Talk"...which would have a pretty neat affect b/c it'd feel like you were walking into a bar (the bar feel) where conversations would be happening (so maybe a bit of historical chat could be displayed) and you could meet folks, but maybe the "Bar Talk" pop-up says something like, "Grab a drink, settle in, and ask your friends about build mechanics or dungeons"...something to encourage users to help each other.

As a vet player, I often log in with no real aim, so I'd be happy to play at being a henchman or hang out at the bar and coach new players.

You don't need to know the dungeon. If its a raid yes, the raid leader should know how to assign people/run the raid. For general quests? Not so much. Either someone in the party will know the dungeon or you can all figure it out together.

Build channel would be cool. Though we already have server wide channels available that go unused. Also DDO discord and these DDO.com forums fills all needs for this already and is a better platform to discuss IMO. But shoot, why not add it in game too.

As far as getting others to lead/teach quests. Just make an LFM and put in it "Don't know quest" "1st time" or "New and need help" etc. etc. Players are really good about helping others already I don't think any system to pay people to do it is necessary. As long as you are upfront in the LFM that you don't know a quest it isn't bad etiquette to post and lead any quest or raid in the game.

I mean you technically could already do this if you wanted by trading people shards or whatever for their time. That's not a playing environment I'd want to encourage though, personally. People shouldn't feel like they should need to pay to get help from others.

I think servers need a server-wide channel like orien's titan. Having general be tied to individual areas is just pointless. I know I've tried new games before and had no real idea how to talk to people.

As for knowing a quest, most people are fairly understanding. Just make sure you put in the lfg that you're new or that you want to learn. Otherwise people will probably just zerg through and leave you behind (but you'll get fast xp!)

I thought this was going to be about hiring your alts as hirelings, which I think would be awesome, if they could get the AI to be halfway decent. Pick four buttons to use, and they get full stats from their gear and build and everything
