The Covetous sentience jewel

The Mists of Ravenloft expansion was released almost 5 years ago on December 6th, 2017.

In the Curse of Strahd raid, an extremely rare drop in the end chest is a sentient jewel called Sentient Jewel of the Covetous (https://ddowiki.com/page/Item:Sentient_Jewel_of_the_Covetous).

I've seen it drop over the years on 4 or 5 occasions, but never for me specifically. On one of those drops, the player who got it already had one so he put it up for roll. Fortunately, I won the roll. Unfortunately, the player passed it to the wrong guy who had left the raid but had not yet left the group. So there the jewel sat and nothing could be done to get it.

That stings to this day.

It wouldn't be so bad if I could turn in Strahd Runes to get it just like I can for any other Strahd raid items but the Covetous jewel is not an option to acquire via runes.

Yes, I know this request has been made before on the DDO Forums, but considering the raid is almost 5 years old and not run that much anymore, is there any harm in just adding the Covetous sentient jewel to the loot list for turning enough Strahd Runes in? Even if it were to cost twice as many runes (2500 instead of 1250), I would still make that trade and would be extremely happy to do so.

I support Arkat. Gatekeeping what is essentially a cosmetic reward (because NO sentient gem has ANY mechanical advantage over another) in the ridiculous lottery system of raid drops is asinine. Raid runes was ONE OF THE BEST changes to the game in recent years. Please put ALL raid loot from any particular raid in its subsequent raid rune list as a rule. Thank you.

They do silly stuff with jewels and creating rarity, like the Lizardfolk jewel from Saltmarsh Ultimate being a single gem with no way to obtain others. I agree they should make Covetous available via runes and they should add source for additional Lizardfolk jewels too.

I've heard the Jewel doesn't drop on LH/LN. Anyone know if that's true? Never seen it drop on any difficulty personally, so I wouldn't know.

It's not just jewels they create rarity for. It's all raid cosmetics. Horses from Dryad/Hunt, jewel from Strahd, cube from FoT, and probably still something from dreads. If they change 1 to be purchasable from runes they should change all.

A similar thing happened to me was wanting to upgrade the Sword of Shadow and I got passed (or should have) the last part in Von6 but the guy who got it had left the raid, I never did get one after all the years I have been playing but the SSS update fixed that. I do have the jewel from Strahd though but still prefer the Kob one. Ill pass it to you if I ever get another and we are in the same raid

I can’t remember 100%, but I thought my Cov jewel dropped on a Hard run. I have run a few R1 runs too however and my memory sucks.

Having something really exclusive (outside of Jibs) for 6 months to a year is fine, but after that there should be mechanic put in place in order to obtain whatever you are hunting, even if you charge 2000 runes for the item. Making progress towards what you really want is a much better feeling than receiving nothing at all… except a growing vacuum where hope used to reside.

Also the jewel is funny and more people should get the chance to experience it!

I've seen it drop on LH - R1. In total, 5 times I saw it appear. The last time, the guy didn't want the jewel and left it in the chest. When people asked him to put it for roll, he was "oh i don't believe in putting my stuff up for roll, but I'll roll on other people's stuff".

On topic: I can understand keeping current shinies under the lock n key of their content, but availability of older stuff should most certainly loosen up some. I would like to see another Raid Loot box come around again, say for next Anniversary or something.

Yeah, that's nice and all, but it's still not the same as experiencing the sentiences in-game.

Hopefully a Dev will hear and it will become available for runes soon, or someone who is not a complete DB, will pull one in a raid and throw it up for a roll.

In general it’s a sniveling sarcastic voice focused on treasure. Says “hurry up treasure bag” when you are not on task. Tells you no one will notice if you steal jewels from the rest shrine. Asks you why you picked your friends.. they keep dying (when party members die). I know it’s been over a year or two and I’m still not tired of hearing it.

In my opinion, this is a poorly recorded, unprofessional and completely non-staged voice, no longer similar to the product of a professional game studio, but to the clumsy voice acting of a home blog.
I would change this jewel to a kobold or dragon stone without the slightest hesitation.

In my opinion, this is a poorly recorded, unprofessional and completely non-staged voice, no longer similar to the product of a professional game studio, but to the clumsy voice acting of a home blog.
I would change this jewel to a kobold or dragon stone without the slightest hesitation.

There's also a "completeness" factor. I've got all the other sentient jewels and I'd like to not only get the Covetous jewel to listen to it, but also to complete my collection.

That's the issue with most of the jewels sadly. They're all super annoying and cartoonish, or just sound bad (dragon). Resolute, Wave and Kobold are the only ones I really like, and even kobold is love-or-hate and Wave is an acquired taste too.

I wish they'd do more "hero" voices and less gimmicky one-note "sidekick" voices because too many of them venture into jar jar territory. The good ones are based on a character, not a single character *trait*

Yeah it’s all subjective. I hate Kobold and Wave- actually fed my Kobold to BR jewel. I can tolerate hearing BR, Cov, and Resolute daily.

Raid cosmetics serve the purpose of beign a goal to chase for bragging rights.
Creates a reason to run raid without contributing to power creep.

Pal, when i read "Covetous" in jewel description, i believe it's mean "Covetous", not "Timid"... ;)

I like kobold, dragon and inquisitive. Resolute and furious... acceptable... Not have wave currently (spended to crafting orb), so need farm for it again.

I'm afraid I can't see that happening. Caught in the Web and The Fall of Truth (for the cube) don't even use the rune system at the moment, and I can't see them giving an eight-year-old expansion in an already overloaded level range, or a pack that's been updated heavily once already, an update pass in the near future.

Raid loot passing is a HUGE problem. It's danm buggy and badly need to be fixed. If someone leaves the zone or the group, the list gets scrambled. If you have the pass list open during that scramble, who you think you're passing to ends up being someone else.

IMHO, clicking a pass should pop-up a confirm and then stuff the item into the player's inventory or (alternatively) send the item via in-game mail to cover DC'd or inventory full cases. For extra safety, it could pop-up a confirm on the recipient, too .. to cover those "oops/fake" rollers.

This solves both bad-pass and buddy-looting issues all at once.
