I have been playing on a small laptop and would like to upgrade my system, specifically, to have a better DDO experience. Can someone give me advice on what specs I should looking for? I've heard DDO is an old game and that somehow affects what computer specs work best with it so just buying a great "gaming computer" may not be optimal. Any advice on good computer and monitor that will work well with DDO are appreciated.

Just make sure your OS is 64bit with at least 8 GB RAM, that's all.

My PC I'm playing DDO with has an i5 processor and a Geforce GT 730, and that's enough. It has only problems with lots of tiny things in the early quest area of "Another man's treasure ..." That's the only part where i have lag graphics-wise. Everything else runs very well so far for me.

Means that you don't need a high-end gaming PC. ;)

Too high graphics resolutions might not be good, because DDO's UI isn't able to scale. It's consisting of bitmap graphics, not of scalable vector graphics.

mmm, that's not "all".

Don't be cheap on your vid card - that drives the game as much as (if not more than) the CPU. If you want pretty, if you want to dual-box, if you want to run the game while you're running other stuff at the same time - get a good (not necessarily "great") "gaming quality" Vid Card.

Also, don't overestimate your eyes and the size of a monitor you want. I make due with an extra-wide 20" (only because of desk constraints) - as a rule, bigger is happier. (At worst, you can always split screen!)

And consider the advantages of a SSD (solid state harddrive) - most systems now have that as default, but you (probably?) don't want to get stuck with one that isn't.

DDO has VERY low requirements. For years I had been running it on an AMD A10-6700 APU (integrated graphics only 844MHz) and was easily able to tri-box with one on ultra high settings and the other two on high settings. The most important thing is likely a SSD (default nowadays).

Beyond that, just look at a decent processor (could even go with a Ryzen ####G (integrated graphics) if you are on a budget), 8GB RAM, and a decent monitor (absolutely no need for a high-end one for DDO).

I dimly remember being in the original DDO beta in 2005 before it was released in 2006 a month before Oblivion. So even though there have been several upgrades over the years - including DirectX 11 support and a 64-bit client - DDO is positively ancient in videogame years. So the good news is the client will run on practically anything even semi-modern, including a Tamagotchi*.

*Do not actually attempt to run DDO on a Tamagotchi, that was just a deep cut for the `90s kids. [I'd like to know if anyone is playing on a Steam Deck, though.]

The semi-bad news is DDO doesn't support a dynamically-scaled UI so running at high resolutions might make the icons too small to see clearly or click on easily. I find it playable on a 27" 2560x1440 display but YMMV. But that just means the worst-case scenario is you dial down the resolution so the buttons aren't too itty-bitty.

FWIW I've been using ReShade (https://reshade.me/) to give the graphics a modest upgrade.
