Hi,

when reading the wiki page about guard items, they, at least try, to describe when a guard effect will trigger:

Trigger:

Being hit by a melee attack
Being hit by ranged attack
Being hit by a spell
Being attacked (description "when being hit or missed in combat")
Source: https://ddowiki.com/page/Guards

Let's have a look at "Earthgrab Guard", for example, the "Epic Rock Boots":
Source: https://ddowiki.com/page/Item:Epic_Rock_Boots

It states:

On a successfully attack.

So when is an attack "successfully"?

The wiki states:

An attack roll represents your attempt to strike your opponent. When you make an attack roll, you roll a d20 and add your base attack bonus and your strength modifier. Your dexterity modifier replaces your strength modifier if you are using a ranged, a thrown weapon or having Weapon Finesse feat and using a proper weapon. If your result equals or beats the target’s Armor Class, you hit and deal damage.
Source: https://ddowiki.com/page/Attack_roll

Unfortunately it does not say when an attack count as "successfully".

So long story short: When does a guard item actually trigger when it states "successfully attack"? On a hit or a "you got hit but AC is to high so i missed"?

Thank you very much :)

It states: [on a successfully attack]...
Okay, that's not what it states, but I think we know what you're trying to say.

(For the record, it states "...when the wearer of this item is successfully attacked in melee..." )

Unfortunately it does not say when an attack count as "successfully"...
Yes it does, altho' it doesn't use that specific word.

..."If your result equals or beats the target’s Armor Class, you hit and deal damage."

That is kinda the definition of a successful attack - the "hitting" part.

(The "damage" part is a diff question - DR etc can reduce a successful hit to "0 damage".)

On a hit or a "you got hit but AC is to high so i missed"?
Where have you seen the phrase that you cite, the "you got hit but AC is to(o) high so i missed"? Afaik, that does not exist in DDO - if AC is too high, you miss, = you don't hit, = unsuccessful. :?
