You've Got My Back not working?

Hello. I have the enhancement "You've Got My Back" from Feydark Illusionist, but I am still taking force damage (not damage procs) from magic missile.

Is this a me problem or a game problem?

Really silly question, but just a reality check--you have your familiar summoned, right?

Sometimes, particularly after a death, I forget they need to be resummoned (and suffer long stretches of quests without their benefits before realizing my familiar isn't out and kicking myself).
