View Full Version : Controllers or Joysticks vs mouse and KB

Wondering how many people play with a joystick or controller and if so, do you find them more ergonomic? I used a controller for about the first 5 years that I played. It eventually died and was a little limited with the number of buttons, so I went to min-keyboard and mouse. (A full keyboard just doesn't work for me - I hate typing, am terrible at it and need to look at the keys and my cats would likely sit on it while try to play.) I have tendonitis and some other issues with my hands and am wondering if I should try controllers again. Any recommendations?
Thanks!

There are many existing posts about using controllers with DDO on the forums. Really depends on the type of toon you're playing (melee vs spellcaster, etc).
General Example: https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/504603-Anyone-use-controllers-instead-of-keyboard
PS4 discussion: https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/500556-Anyone-use-a-ps4-controller
As with most things, your mileage may vary.

You can search for "ddo controller site:www.ddo.com" and get many results from google. Take out the "site" and see results from reddit/steam/ddowiki as well. Or go to Advanced search in the forums and put "controller joystick" in the keywords. You can get more specific if you have a particular controller/joystick in mind to use, just add that to the search keywords.
Good luck!

Just this part can be solved by giving your cat their own second keyboard or something equivalent. My cats are crazy about my laptop because it's a consistent heat source when I play DDO. Over the winter I bought them a heating pad that I place on the table next to me, and they happily chose it over the keyboard.

I literally can't play with a controller. Too much stuff I need to press and nowhere near enough buttons on a controller even with modifiers. For reference I use a 26 button mouse and and full size gaming keyboard.

I use a joystick (PS2 style) with occasional mouse clicks.
I use a keyboard and mouse at work I like to have a vastly different interface for gaming.

I can't imagine any class other than a lazy aura warlock POSSIBLY able to play with so few hotkeys lol. And then it'd be super annoying to navigate menus and such.

can I suggest a controller for your left hand like the Razer Orbweaver Chroma? (assuming you are right handed). It gives you enough keys to press for a wizard to have bound spells easily accessible and a mini joystick for movement. Beats an x-box controller or standard keyboard any day imho.

I will keep that in mind, thanks!
