Taskbars are a necessary evil of DDO and many MMOs. DDOs are past their prime and are in dire need of a revamp. Here are a list of problems and their suggested solutions:
Problem One:
I keep dragging an icon off the taskbar when I try to click it and my arm is in a certain position. It's not intentional. I know there's an option to lock all taskbars, but I don't like having to go into the menu to unlock it when I need to make changes. What can I do?
This is a problem I've discovered is happening more and more often the older that I get. A few older players I've talked to have shared with me the frustration of this happening, especially in the middle of combat. The solution is simple. Keep the option to lock all taskbars, but add a key you can depress which will unlock them while it is held down. This hybrid solution gives players the option to lock things down while still having the flexibility of changing the configuration when needed without having to go into a menu.
Problem Two:
I go to click on a leftmost icon on a taskbar and instead click either the button to changed the configuration of the bar from horizontal to vertical or vertical to horizontal, or I merge the taskbar back with the main one. It is SO frustrating.
The solution for this one is (I believe) solved by the solution for problem one, but also it could be fixed by hiding those two clickables until some key is held down. This eliminates it from happening at all.
Problem Three:
I try to align all my bars but it can't seem to get them to line up perfectly. Help!
It's time to allow taskbars to snap onto each other. C'mon guys. It really can't be that hard. You want a more modern, more accessible game? You need to do infrastructure stuff like this.
Problem Four:
I'm playing at 4k resolution. My taskbars are so small, not to mention the store menus are nearly impossible to read.
Time to make ridiculously large taskbars and store menus as an option, so that when its scaled up to 4k, they just look normal. Take the art assets you currently have and just upscale them. They won't look great at lower resolutions, but the idea is that they're going to be used at 4k, so they SHOULD look fine. As an added suggestion, give players the ability to customize all the icons with local graphics files formatted in some standard way laid out by you. Full UI customization would open up a whole new enthusiast group for DDO. There are people out there who would LOVE the opportunity to do the work for you FOR FREE. With this, and a lot of art assets. I mean there are people out there who just love DDO and want to make it better.
Anyway, those four solutions would go a LONG way to making the game less clunky with the taskbars.
