This game has been in maintenance mode a couple years now. The very small updates, not fixing ongoing issues, no customer service, no bug reporting, long delays to any problems or requests, all points to maintenance mode. No one wants to come out and say it.

Good will. No gaming company would obligate itself to compensate for downtime in a ToS agreement, but just about all of them do it anyway without people having to suggest it in a message board.

Just take a look at the VIP rewards if you need to understand where some folks are coming from... Still nothing changed there despite SSG acknowledging it is weak like what, a year ago or more? But that is a whole other can of worms.

The name/password incorrect thing is a stupid message when the login server is down to start with, but when you factor in that the password reset is broken for comcast and AOL email accounts it's cruel too. If you were to go the "forgot password" route you would lose access to your account indefinitely. I have a friend who's been locked out 3 weeks now waiting for the quasi-nonexistent customer service to fix it.

To clear up some confusion, there was a connection issue between the games and the authentication system, so the error message it would throw was about invalid credentials rather than something like "connection error". You don't need to update your account (other than usual internet best practice of periodically changing your passwords). Also if you happened to have left your game client open trying to login without ever having closed the launcher, you'd still keep seeing that error after we fixed the issue, so you definitely needed to close and reopen the game launcher.

SLAs for these things rarely matter in the actual time it takes to fix. if a hosting datacenter misses it, they just say 'oh well'. SSG would have to actually take legal action to get any recompense.

We don't have any current plans to change server locations, at least none that I'm aware of.

As other folks have pointed out, ping can be a bit of a red herring these days, as it's rarely the biggest factor when it comes to lag. It's certainly a contributing factor, and the further away you are from a server the more your performance degrades - if I remember my DevOps days correctly, that's not a linear relationship, but it's been like fifteen years so I could be wildly off for modern stuff.

Anyway, since our lag investigations and improvements got underway in earnest a few months ago, we've made some solid strides. We obviously have a long way to go - I had some pretty frustrating experiences myself playing on Gladden over the break - but we've got additional work coming for Update 32 that we're cautiously optimistic about.

- The 64-bit server work unfortunately didn't wrap up before end of year as we'd hoped, but we made good progress and we're still on it.
- One of the interesting historical artifacts with this game is it was built to assume more/most players were on dial-up. As we continued our archaeological excursions into our networking code, we identified some areas of improvement, some of which are in active testing right now, and assuming we don't find any massive issues we can't resolve, will go out with 32. This change may actually be on Bullroarer already, I'd have to check (it's behind the scenes, so there's not anything for players to test).
- The game also does some really inefficient queries, particularly on login, that affect not just your login experience but everyone else on the server (although others less so). We've found some improvements that should hopefully improve login times, but also lead to less halo for other players. This work is getting close and will enter testing soon as well.

So progress continues, and we're continuing to dedicate engineering to it in the future.

Hey folks, there're currently errors with the login server. We're currently investigating and will post further updates as we have them.

The errors are preventing players from logging into the game, and giving an erroneous message that the "Username or Password is Incorrect". You do NOT need to change your password, this is an issue with the login server.

Same login issue for me as well. I was settling in to farm up Twelve Tokens to respecify a new mostly monk build into a mostly fighter for already having a mostly monk multi-class on another account. Woe was short lived though as I realized I have not yet planned out the mostly rogue version of the staff fighting monk multi-class. Anticipation kicked away dread with thought of tabbing over to the spread sheet to begin work on the monk 3, fighter 4 rogue 13 concept. With these 3 versions this is my first ever hand at two-handed feats and I find I'm loving the effects (I didn't care for the feats when "glancing blows" was the only appeal to the feats). The rogue 3/fighter 2/monk 15 is still standing by at level 10 waiting to be played, my first life rogue 4/monk 16 kicked butt and survived reapers even where reincarnated team members got ganked and is ready for reincarnation itself. For now, however, smashing stuff with a stick will wait while I design the mostly rogue. I have an eye on that tier 5 acrobat enhancement that provides the same +3 attack and +3 damage (only to quarterstaff) but also comes with +10 melee power. Awright, guys, I'm off to the design board. I hope you all find silver linings of your own while those poor fellas at SSG are pulling out hair to get things running again.

When you login to a cloud based game, there are many servers in theprocess.
In this case the Login Server that handles the initial connection to the game is having an issue processing/authenticating your credentials so you are blocked now.
If you had logged in before the issue started, you can be in the gameplaying and having a grand ol' time (I have a friend who logged in earlier this morning and she says she is playing just fine)
But if she logs out completely then she will be in the same boat the rest of us are in.

i.e. waiting on the skeleton staff of SSG to have someone wake up on a Saturday and realize something is wrong.

I to have been in IT for 20+ years (Network Engineer) and know first hand that a simple acknowledgement of the issue, even if there is no solution or ETA when it will be resolved, goes a long way. Does not need to be a long explanation. State the issue, and that it is being investigated. That short sentence for support would buy the hours of breathing room.

Seems simple customer service is a dying concept these days.

Can you guys investigate changing this message? It's incredibly confusing and given the current problems with some email accounts not receiving forgotten credentials emails is also damaging to the player base.

You might wanna do two things there for the future:
1) have a monitoring service in place that notifies you when this service is down.
2) Change the error message.. a 401 isn't the same as a 503.
