Hello,

I am relatively new to DDO and would like some advice on building a Ranger with a Rogue element to it? Anyone got any builds that I might be able to follow please? :D

I started with a wood elf ranger but my feeling is I will need to re-roll.

If you go DEX-based, use scimitars; if STR-based, use longswords with Knight's Training (https://ddowiki.com/page/Knight%27s_Training) feat.

Thank you for that, I did look at this one. I was rather hoping to not have to re-roll but looks like it's the best way. Thank you very much for taking time to reply! ;)

Well, without knowing what your current build is, I can't say if you need to reroll. But all characters should start with a Heart of Wood they can use for a Lesser Reincarnation (https://ddowiki.com/page/Lesser_Reincarnation) to fix your build. It won't let you change your class choices so far, though.

This is the build I've followed so far, only level 2 at the moment so it's no biggie if I have to re-roll. Good point about the Heart of Wood! Thanks :)

If you want to stick with archery instead of melee, the ranger Trapmonkey works either way. It's mostly a question of choosing the right feats, since ranger provides so many free ones.

Archer: Point Blank Shot, Precision, Improved Critical->Ranged, Combat Archery, Overwhelming Critical, Doubleshot. Optional: Weapon Focus->Ranged.
Tempest (TWF): Precision (or Power Attack), Improved Critical, Overwhelming Critical. STR builds will also take Knight's Training. Optional: Two Weapon Defense, the Dodge / Mobility / Spring Attack chain.

In terms of skills, the two must-haves are Search and Disable; without them, you can't find nor disarm traps. Spot is your "early warning alarm" which lets you know of nearby traps or stealthed enemies. Open Lock is optional but obviously it lets you loot more shinies; and sometimes bonus objectives are behind locked doors.

Welcome to the game!

I am relatively new to DDO and would like some advice on building a Ranger...
(and this is @ all too)

So, there are many classes which can go more than one way. Artificers may be the worst - repeater builds, blasters, bastard sword melees, mixed - wow!

Rangers have 2 basic choices - melee (two-weapon, aka "Tempest"), or ranged (usually bows, but crossbows or even repeaters are possible).

So, when asking for a build, be sure to specify what sort of game play or style you're looking for. Here (from the build you linked), "ranged". ;)

...with a Rogue element to it...
(again, @ all)

Be aware that, in DDO, "Trapping" does not depend on the number of "Trapper" levels you take! All it needs is full skill ranks in the skills that matter: critically Search and Disable, and optionally Spot and Open Lock (and possibly UMD) (and Un' covered this in more detail, above). So, 1 level of Rogue or Artificer opens the "full ranks" for those skills, then it's just a matter of having the Skill Points to buy those ranks "cross class" (which often costs double).

Ranger is a great choice, not only because it has lots of Skill Points/level but also because Search and Spot are class skills! Classes that only have 2 Skill Points/level (Clerics, Fighters, Pali's, etc.) are typically problematic to dovetail with trapping, because they enjoy neither of those advantages. (The exception are builds that have Intelligence as their primary attribute, as they can simply brute-force the Skill Points; +Int tomes help too.)

So long as you have the full ranks in the skills*, and level-approp gear, congrats - you're a trapper!

(* Open Lock gets a d20 roll added to get the final result, so many players accept a starting 4 ranks in OL and then just re-roll until they roll high enough to succeed. This is slow(er) than full ranks, and gets worse the higher level content you run, but this approach can open 90%+ of the locks in the game.)

I started with a wood elf ranger but my feeling is I will need to re-roll.
If this is your first character, don't be shy about deleting and re-rolling. For a starting player, it may seem like you've put a lot of time into it, but 1) the time you've spent will go faster the second time, 2) the time is probably nothing compared to the time to 20 (or 30!), and 3) saving that Heart of Wood for a true crisis ("oops" happens) is a good investment.

There are many threads with builds, or where you can ask for advice, and it's strongly recommended that you use a forum-approved build rather than "faking" it. VERY easy to come up with a build that looks good but will fail by level 5-8 or so - happens all the time.

Here're a few collections of builds - some few of the older ones need upgrading, but many are fine as they are, and this gives a new(er) player an idea of what's available. Whatever the source, if it's not recent (last couple months!), post it or a link in a thread and ask - vets are usually happy to advise you on what needs to be done to bring it up to modern standards.
