Hi, former player here. I saw you were giving away some quest packs with a coupon code, and thought that was good enough incentive reinstall the game and check out what’s new.

However, the game seems to have compatibility issues with my modern GPU (NVIDIA RTX 3070). I kind of got it working by disabling my other GPU, but it won’t let me select my preferred resolution and the game crashes if I alt-tab out of it. It fusses about DirectX 9.

And then, I can’t even log in with my main character since it’s currently a race that was only available to me when I had a sub. So I guess I’d have to buy that race to even log in with the character, which is kind of a bummer.

Anyway, thanks for the free quest packs. I’m going to uninstall the game again now. Too many obstacles to have to overcome just to check out the current state of the game. Maybe I’ll try again some time in the future. Just thought I’d drop a line with this feedback, since I assume you’d rather people not uninstall the game. Happy holidays!

So...you have a custom rig with multiple different GPUs and you're having driver issues...you don't have access to vip features even though you're not paying for vip anymore...and it's SSG's fault they're making the game too hard for you? :D

GPU (NVIDIA RTX 3070) there was a work around for this and its an old issue 02-12-2020 that for the most part was resolved with the workaround.
NVIDIA graphics card.

No, nothing custom. It’s an off the shelf, brand name gaming laptop. A lot of the more recent models have multiple GPUs. One on the main board for general purpose, and a higher end one for games or other graphics intensive stuff. Other games seem to handle this setup fine.

I understand your point about not having VIP anymore of course. But having a paywall to even log into an existing character just added to the bad experience of having to troubleshoot the game out of the gate.

Thanks for the link. Internet search didn’t turn that one up for me.

An obscure workaround is nice and all, but I don't understand why this isn't fixed by now. At the very least, the 64bit client should link to that post.

I really hope they are measuring the number of installs and checking how many actually fail to get into the game.

If it is a newer pc that came with Windows 10 or 11, I have a feeling you got the DirectX 9 error because it did not have all the older DirectX files installed.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35

This installs all the previous DirectX files which allows you to play older games like DDO.

Thanks. Actually, archest's link above to the workaround resolved the issue, so installing an older DirectX version wasn't necessary.

The instructions in that link are no longer quite correct. These settings are now managed by Windows rather than in the NVidia control panel. But it was enough to figure it out.

DDO seems to be using DX11 even though what I actually have installed is DX12. DX12 has some kind of backward compatibility mode for DX11, and the x64 client seems to support DX11.

Agree with LurkingVeteran, though. It would be great to see this fully fixed. Any new player trying this on a modern gaming laptop is potentially going to run into this problem and might just move on.

I'm curious, what exactly is your solution to having access to premium content when you aren't paying for that content? Mine would be to spend the $15 and check out the game again. The cheap option is to roll another character from the free choices available. But I'd like to hear what you think they should do.

The workaround that I have found is to not tab out of the game indeed it will crash if you do

If you have to use window mode then it won't crash

The easy answer was given already by the OP purchase the race

I guess one way to do it might be to tie that kind of “content” benefit to selection rather than login. I.e. if you are a certain race/class today but no longer have access to it, you can still login but can’t select that race/class again after a TR, or choose it for a new character.

I just ended up buying the race so that character could log in. It seemed like less of a big deal after I had some amount of confidence that the game would actually work correctly on my current PC.

My main point here is that if you have someone who is not playing your game and bringing you revenue today, how many hoops do you want them to have to jump through before they are doing something fun and engaging? I’m just pointing out that some hoops exist. SSG can do what they want to with that feedback.

It actually seems to work fine in full screen mode with alt-tab now that I have implemented the workaround.

This is the other link for the direct x 9, but this one is the full offline installer. Sometimes the web installer errors out on Windows 10 and 11 with a you have a newer verson installed already message.
