View Full Version : Losing movement speed just because monsters look at me funny?

I was running in the desert wilderness while checking my movement speed multiplier, it was 166%, I got closer to a gnoll, and the moment he noticed me I lost 2% speed, so now I was at 164%. I kept running and once I got dungeon alert 1, I lost another 2%, and kept losing 2% for every rank of dungeon alert to the max of -10%. Can this be right? WIKI says nothing about losing movement speed just because you are spotted by a monster, nor for the dungeon alerts...

At the Yellow Skull alert level, monsters will cause you to be Harried on contact (even if their attack roll fails).
Description of "harried" : https://ddowiki.com/page/Harried
This affects run speed, and if it gets too bad, the character might not be able to move forward almost at all and only be able to jump. To get rid of harried, the Dungeon Alert must be lowered to green.
"On contact" there probably doesn't mean "body contact" but like "enemy contact" like in "on sight".
You can test this easily with the quest "Stealthy Repossession".

Thanks for the reply, but that is not it. Like I said, the first 2% I lose before any alerts, and before the monster made any move outside of spotting me. at green alert I lost 2% more. The wiki states "at Yellow alert and above" you might get harried. Also, the harried state is shown on the top of the screen, so you know when you are harried, the losing speed up to -10% was without any harried debuff.

He's not look at you funny, its your character noticing that the monster (gnoll) had noticed your character and that your character is traveling cautiously and this tactical movement simulating your character causes the slow down given you the player the chance to think and maneuver. Since this is all in real time, sometimes it might have the opposite effect.

So you are arguing that this is WAI. Guess I learned something new. Thanks.

was asked more than once already but devs never answered.
while i agree that probably has something to do with alert, it does not make sense to me cause it happens when you have aggro from just one single mob (if you are not mounted).
how messed up is aggro\alert and how many hidden or not-so-hidden (useless?) operations and stat mods does the game make and how often? yeah i know i always sound polemical, just asking myself how many things can be messed up and heavy for the old code and tired server hamsters if just e.g. aggroing a far away mob changes your movement speed.

It's clear to me that your character slows down because the monster looked at him funny, and now you're character is trying to not giggle.
...I'll see myself out.
