View Full Version : Lizardman race

Some people think that the new race coming up is Lizardman, on the small chance that is true, I add my comments.
I first played a lizardman in 1st ed. I think it was based on an article from white dwarf mag, if I recall right (before they went 100% warhammer).
Even a friend did a comic book on him.
I also played one in 3rd ed.
What I want to see in the race.
Well, I like the look of the lizardman in the 1st ed. monster manual. I think it looks better then the more current look. So I would like that option.
For stats and the enhancement tree I think the Tough but Agile is the way to go. +s for no or light armor.
For combat, I have two styles I like to play as lizardman.
1. Unarmed combat, unless they plan on adding a new universal unarmed enhancement tree that stands alone, I request they make it work with handwraps monk.
2. A non-bard, non-tank, sword and board style. Any onehanded weapon plus small shield with no or light armor. Based on dps, not tanking.
So, I would like in the tree.
1. Set based on toughness, like AC, PRR, and such.
2. A set toggled, one for each style above, I say toggled, because if I am playing a lizardman, I would like to put alot of points in it, and I would only play one of the two styles, nat.
3. A set for flavor, like swim bonus, fav enemy, and other things.
4. The stat stuff should be dex and con, with fort and PRR.
This would be for the Base Lizardman, not the Iconic, people seem to think that it will be a sorc, and that sounds good to. I like sorcs also. Might even roll a new character to have both (at the moment I only play one toon, that has all past lives).

My money is on the Rakasta. Because they first appeared as a playable race in X-1: The Isle of Dread. So, you know, makes a lot of sense.
But I like the idea of playing as a Lizardfolk Shaman. I'd love to see that happen eventually, but I don't think the time has come yet. I feel like it's gotta be an adventure setting where the Lizardfolk aren't default enemies, ya know? Like a setting where it makes sense to play as a Monster. Like, why wouldn't the villages simply attack you if you're playing a Monster race? But those are just my thoughts on the subject.

I would think that the scales would be a natural armor, light most likely with AP's to "toughen/thicken" the scales for a heavier armor.
I could see a righteous approach to an Iconic LM as a Paladin, however a would love to see a witch doctor developed for Iconic, but if wishes were horses, ya know?
Re-skinning the Dragon born should make it pretty easy and I do love the detail on the splash screen of the lizard man. I'd play one and play the heck out of it if it had a tongue attack :)
But I would rather see a witch doctor class added to the mix and a lizard man race option.
I absolutely love playing a deep gnome but buying that +1 heart every time kinda stinks and then leveling one level at a time with my guildies also kinda sux. If we had an option to play Iconics at level 1 or 15, level one being able to choose a class over the assigned class, I would love that.

I have ZERO interest in a Lizardman race.
I'd have WAY more interest in a Kobold race than a Lizardman race and I am totally against adding Kobolds as a player race.

I don't get why everyone wants Kobolds... Anyway I'm camp "Phanaton" for the new race. Something totally different from what we already have. But if I had to put money on something it's probably going to be Kobold... it's the "easiest" option because they are already in the game. But I'd even prefer Tabaxi because it's better marketable than the unknown Rakasta.

Why?? because they are funny in an annoying way.
also, there are several guilds that can not wait
to feature and stream the first all Kobold Raid !

I’d like something like Genasi. Start with +2 CON, planar affinity at character creation for an extra point of STR/DEX/INT/WIS and a small boost to appropriate elemental resistance. In the tree another stat point, an appropriate SLA, plus the DDO standards of a boost to spell power or added melee elemental damage should give options for nearly any play style. For extra flavor maybe somewhere high in the racial tree the ability to pick a little bit of the non-elemental part of your heritage.
Lizardfolk don’t really move the needle for me, and I’d rather eat rancid tuna salad from a troglodyte’s backside than play a kobold.

It depends what their design priority is.
The final obvious iconic is sorcerer, so having a race with some some sorcerer archetype makes sense.
But that would suggest the racial PL stat bonus would be Charisma. Surely not, as it already has 3. Strength has only one (the rest, 2) so if that's a consideration, the new race would be one that is obviously brawny, which Rakasta are not.
If it is thematic to the new expansion, Rakasta is a good choice, though I find the beast/human vibe was already captured (if poorly) with razorclaw, and if they are to be true shapeshifters that opens a can of coding worms for SSG.
I'll go out on a limb here and suggest Triton is the best compromise race. They get a Strength bonus, the pack is set amid islands (water, water everywhere) and they could be cold-based sorcerer iconic.

I don't get why everyone wants Kobolds...
Because everyone loves pocket dragons.
Because the lower-case dragons are adorable.
But I may be biased; my DM is planning a campaign and I've made a kobold bard who was banished from his tribe and is hunted by them due to something he stole from their dragon's horde.
He learned, after being banished, that he only has half of the item and, being someone who NEEDS to know how things work (which is why he stole them item), he wants to sneak back into his tribe and steal the other part.
He's never been to the surface world before, so he has no idea how normal items work, or what they are called, and he makes it up to sound smart (Think: The seagull from The Little Mermaid, but actually intelligent. Just...wrong, allot).
He even took a 'Surface Name' named on the first item he 'found', when he was shadowing some adventurers; Knick Knack. :D

Cleric ? I used mine for that.
And, besides, there's a ( imho ) very good Eberron novel telling you more about Shifters ...

Indeed. In deliberately mirroring his language I fell into the same inaccuracy of speaking for everyone.
But I hope my point was still clear, that the preferences of a minority or even majority of the player base may have little bearing on the choice SSG makes for a new race.

i'm a fan of the kobold race
but for the new expansion race + iconic, lizardfolk makes sense, sure. also that cat-folk rakasta.
if not kobolds hehehe, i'd also like and it would make also sense, if the iconic will be sorcerer, and probably will be, genasi. (hope for a sorc trees mini-pass too!) after aasimar and tiefling, let's add genasi, why not. it's d&d stuff. it would also be customizable with the element, dragonborn-ish.
then yeah we are gamers and we will complain anyway :)
if they do dragonbornish genasi, we will say they are dragonborn reloaded.
if they do catfolk, we will say we just had shifters
if they do lizards we will say both of the above, dragons are lizards but lizardfolk is more animal like, and we will say they are ugly.
freakin gamers hehehe

Only if they implement tridents so I can impale myself on one.
Other options beyond Genasi - non iconic shadar kai (which might be low hanging fruit what with the models already existing), satyrs (since we’ve got the feywild), eladrin (meh as far as bringing much to the table aside from anything fun with the seasons but feywild appropriate again), maybe yugoloth with arcanaloth sorc as an iconic?
Ultimately I guess I don’t care aside from having to add another set of past lives. If I really hate the option there’s always Ottos.

Shifters being a core Eberron class, have been asked for since day 1; along with Kalashtar, Changelings and Gnomes.
We only need Changelings and Kalashtar to complete the Eberron cores.
I know it would be a lot of work to introduce psionics, but I would prefer Kalashtar next.

Well, I like the look of the lizardman in the 1st ed. monster manual. I think it looks better then the more current look. So I would like that option.
No, the 1st-ed look is terrible. Human arms, human hands, human legs, human feet, snake-like head. Just... no.
I would love a fun Kobold playable race, of course including a "kobold shaman" iconic... but there are a couple of problems...
First, there are no kobolds on the Isle of Dread!
"shaman" is already an actual class in dnd that sits somewhere between Cleric and Druid. And we don't need ANOTHER shapeshifter. Everyone seems to prefer Sorcerer and I tend to agree. But it's still a thing.
We need a Strength racial past life. Kobolds traditionally have significant penalties to Strength and Constitution, so that wouldn't work.
The completely different size and stance will make it hard for kobolds to wear any item in the game. You can't see items on a Dragonborn's head - would we want that for all items on a Kobold?

to be honest I have zero interest in another race at all. Just means I need to get another 3 past lives on multiple toons, some I am still trying to get racial completionist on.
I definitely do NOT want Kobold. they are a minion race, should not be a playable character race.

Thanks for the replies.
But I was not wanting to start a forum for guessing the next race, my guess its already determined.
I just wanted to put my 2 cents in on what I would like to see IF it was as some people think lizardman.
Only a few posts responded to this, and thanks to them.
Thanks to everyone also, always fun to read.
But if you have thoughts on what a good lizardman would be please add more.
Ether way, this is a good way to bump this, in hopes a dev sees it.

That's the nature of an open discussion forum, like chatting at the dinner table with an extended family.
Anyway, I'd play lizardman at least three times.
I am just not convinced that it is anything more than a flavour difference in a game like DDO.

No offense but have you read your OP? It's very unclear what you want! Writing an OP with just your 'guess' is open for interpretation of how to respond to it. If you want this topic to be about a certain subject you have to steer it and not just throw some story at everyone.

Minotaur- strength based and they cover several classes; sorc, cleric, fighter, barb.
So my wishful vote is Minotaur.
But WotC doesn't read the forums, they already decided what to allow next and it's going WotC's way...
