2d10 damage every 2 seconds for 16 seconds. Can stack 3 times.

Cooldown is 10 secs.

Can anyone explain how you are supposed to get it to stack 3 times? The 3rd time will always be 20 secs after the first one, by which time the first has expired.

I have nioticed this one several other spells and never thought about whether it was possible.

Most effects like this refresh the duration and dont keep track of duration for each individual stack. So If you can stack it once, you can stack it to full.

This isn't always true (mostly because of bugs), but it's the intended design.

The way stacking works in general is that when you cast the spell a countdown timer starts.

If you cast again before the timer goes off it will add a stack and restart the timer.

So adding a second stacks gives you 16 more seconds to add the third stack. The cooldown is 10 seconds so this is not a problem.

If you inspect the enemy you will see # of stacks and duration. If you have multiple stacks, when the timer runs out you lose a stack and the timer restarts again.

Can't say I've tested it, but you could also have more than one 'lock in the party.

Lots of effects work like this, so that's what I'm guessing.

I decided to test it. At 0:06 I hit Nishan with Consume. At 0:17, second Consume. He clearly has 2 stacks. At 0:28 I hit him with the third Consume, and he has 3 stacks -- for about one second. Then stacks are back down to 2, at 0:32 down to 1, and disappear entirely at 0:33.

If you continue to expel consume on the same target, you can continue to have max stacks on the same target until they are dead.

Thats...not what happens there at all

You hit him with the first consume and he gets two icons...not sure what the second one is, but that's not two stacks of consume

You apply a second stack, the duration on both icons refreshes. The first copy of the icon increments up to 2, the second does not

Then you cast Consume a third time but it doesnt hit the mob - probably hit the scorpion instead - so the stacks dont update and the timer doesnt refresh. Then all the stacks expire at 0:00, they dont de-increment, and both icons disappear

It's working the way it should - successful re-applications increment the stacks and renew the timer on all stacks, then all stacks expire simultaneously if it reaches 0:00

You are right. I re-watched it carefully, and yes, the stacks never reached 3.

Going to suggest other* people re-watch this again even more carefully, as you can see that the 3rd cast doesn't land on him at all, note that it is blocked by any enemies/terrain on route and also won't stack up on mobs if you cast during an "Immune" phase like these mobs have.

Pick a less messy testing situation with just one enemy and fewer interactions and then see.

The second visual icon for Consume is just a tracking debuff for other effects that proc when cast on Consumed mobs, such as those higher up in the tree.
