Master of the dead... Broken?

Hi all

I just took Master of the dead for my pale master. I always take this choice but never read the combat log... till today.

I got this:

So, lesser death aura get the same caster level than death aura, no matter if I have a feature that gives +10 maximum caster level.

Is this WAI? Are all the master of X line feats broken? Does anyone else have more data? Thx!

I believe combat chat does not take max caster level into account, so that's not a reliable way to check.
Try doing a numbers (dps/healing) test before and after you take the feat, using the same equipment and buffs. (your epic level will give you a slight spellpower boost, but that should be a very small bonus compared to 10 MCL)

Also keep in mind that MCL is not CL. Think of it like dodge cap vs dodge.

Don't forget that lesser death aura and death aura don't have a max caster level that means they should always be cast with the same caster level.

Which makes the feat master of the dead only really useful for chill touch and negativ energie burst and greater death aura.

Maybe in the past death aura had a max caster level and they changed it.

Are you sure? I recently swapped out master of the dead and noticed both LDA and DA proc'ing for less - forcing me to swap it back in. I don't think I was imagining things since it was causing survivability issues and forcing me to hit NEB much more often.

I am not 100% sure, but in the spell description is no MCL metioned.

Also keep in mind that pre-u51, EDs gave just +CL (with the exception of draconic giving a few more +CL/MLC to specific elements); now post-u51, you get +1 CL/+1 MCL every 2 epic levels. At 30, all your spells have +5 MCL for free off the changes (along with +5 CL).

It wasn't supposed to, but it did. Testing showed it had a hidden cap of +10, which you hit at lvl 20. See "actual effects" on wiki.

I mainly took Master of the dead for the neg energy burst, to be honest. As my "holy carp" button, I wanted big self-heals even in reaper.
