Of course, only an assumption but every item I know you can sell in the shard exchange that is also available in the DDO Store cannot have a buyout price...
So it is not absurd to assume that this is simply to make players buy in the DDO store rather than buy in the shard exchange.
Another questionable game design decision which is most likely caused by greed.

Store items cannot have a buy it now price. This is to protect against cheesing the Store by making burner accounts, grinding cheap one-time-only favor, buying store items, and selling them to your main account for minimum AS
You can still do it, technically, but odds are someone else will outbid you, so it makes it impractical to try

Not sure what this limitation is for.
Preventing from selling stuff for cheap, say by an inexperienced player or from a stolen account (with intention to quickly buy them out for themselves)?
But... AFAIK these items can be put for buyout on Plat AH anyway?
Edit: ahh, a burner account, got it, kinda easy way to get DP and then "steal" from...

just my 2 cents, i'm not an auction expert\player
why sell them to yourself, they are unbound if you can auction them. you just trade em.
if you need something here and now, store only. no shard buyout cause it means letting you buy it maybe cheaper and trasferring wealth (shards) to another player. and this is bad. i don't complain, it is nice already that we can turn some nice thing we looted into some shards. in time. and that, in time, another player may buy em, cheaper. but it needs time and shards. it means, vip\premium only and shards to post\buy. a total F2P just can't. money is involved anyhow. edit, sometimes you can buy for more shards than it is worth in ddo points. that is, if a player has a lot of shards cause trading and don't want to buy for points, it's a way to burn em. premium currency is gone anyway, and yeah someone will gain it, but after the fees.
no problem for platinum AH, you definitely got it cheaper but the seller gained "nothing". just plat. also probably the seller looted it, but in case the seller wanted to buy store items and turn em into....just plat, fast and asap... such behaviour is very welcome i guess and why hinder it. that is, if the store version is bound or unbound opposed to looted. this is just me thinking, i don't know case by case if this is possible.
