View Full Version : A BarBearian build

So this is a simple 12/8 Barbarian/Druid build and am hoping for feedback on it and anything I am missing. A note: it reads Improved Critical as I am a Dwarf using a DA, and have several good ones (Storm, Duergar, etc), but I am not stuck on this, and can perfectly well go for Knight's Training and an Oathblade for example.

A few thoughts:
1) Shield mastery feats don't work in animal form. :(
2) With your enhancement point split you don't get any bonuses to critical threat range or multiplier. You could swap some points out of Nature's Protector into one of the Barbarian trees for the crit bonuses in their T5s.
If you really want to keep your T5 in the Nature's Protector tree, you could instead do something like a 13 Druid/6 Fighter/1 Favored Soul split and grab Strike with No Thought from the Kensei tree.
3) I'd recommend putting your stat level ups towards Strength instead of Constitution, YMMV.
Happy hunting :)

A typical bear build has 1 FvS level for Divine Might (or Divine Will).
11 Barb is enough to benefit from improved rage (+10 melee power), so the split is 11barb/8druid/1fvs
A typical DPS-oriented stat distribution would be:
33-35 Frenzied Berserker
26 Nature Warrior (Fatal Harrier and Ferocity)
8 Nature Protector (stance and +10 MP while raged)
8-11 Vistani (haste boost)
3-4 Warsoul (Divine Might/Will)
Some builds take THF feats for Strikethrough enhancements in FB
If you want more tanky build,
then possibly 12 barb / 5 cleric (animal domain for extra hp) / 3 Druid (enough for basic bear form and Natural Fighting feats)
T5 in Occult Slayer:
24 FB (crazy strike, core 4)
37 OS (T5, core 4)
8 Nature Protector
8 vistani (haste boost)
3 Warpriest (Divine Might)

Thanks! I should add that it was because of Strikethrough that I went for the Dwarven Axe and shield combination.

Argh. Will talk to Fred. Only lvl 3 so still eminently modifiable.

The reason I had gone for the Nature's Protector was how strong it seemed with weapon+shield overall. That plus the synergy with Barbarian rages. As to the Barbarian tree, I had initially built this for survivability for Hardcore last year, but due to personal tragedy never had the opportunity to try it out. This is why it is geared around Blood Tribute early on and maximum physical and magical resistances through NP. I am definitely thinking more offensive here though, so will definitely give this a rethink and see how speccing out Ravager T5 (for crit range) works out. If I am to go FVS1, it will likely mean 7 levels of Druid, though, but that loses Dire Bear. I have no experience with Druids, but suspect that is a non-no for this concept. SIGH. 12 Druid/7 Barbarian/ 1FVS?

Bears get better damage scaling when using 2H weapons, so if your goal is DPS, you are better off with a 2H weapon. Falchion works best with FB T5.

Some builds take THF feats for Strikethrough enhancements in FB
What is the alternative?

Here is another twist still with DA and Shield. I don't have FvS so will need to obtain that with Favor, so it is out for this build. I tossed out Shield Mastery and replaced it with THF, as it gives Strikethrough even with a shield.

11 barb 8 druid, you get better bear shape at druid 8
in bear form, thf feats don't apply strikethrough by themselves, they only enable FB enhancements.
so, ditch supreme cleave, blood trail and lash out. take mad munitions, crazy arms, focus wide. that be 35 points in FB, either use universal ap tome or take 1 point from Divine Will.

Here is another twist still with DA and Shield. I don't have FvS so will need to obtain that with Favor, so it is out for this build. I tossed out Shield Mastery and replaced it with THF, as it gives Strikethrough even with a shield.
well IMO those points spared from FvS tree would be better spent in Vistani. you get haste boost for 8 ap, then for just 3 more ap you get core 3 which gives 5% doublestrike.
alternatively you could take 1 level fighter for haste boost instead, and save 4 more ap (compared to 8 in vistani), but that probably won't help much.
if you are going Ravager, consider 12 druid 8 barb. Nature Warrior core 4 gives +1 crit multi (which is better than 10 melee power from greater rage barbs get at level 11), and 8 barb gives improved uncanny dodge
34 ravager, 27 nw, 8 np, 8 vistani, that's 77 ap, so no FB, that's a concern.

Before I start mounting all this in Builder and Builder Lite, which I do as you saw, I do want to thank you for the generous feedback and advice. No strikethrough in Bear form. Sigh! lol. What you're saying, without stating it, is that all the usual advantages a DA might have (strikethrough with shield) are nullified, and I would be better off just ditching it for this construct. Big Sigh. Ok, I am only lvl 3, being the world's slowest leveler (second life slows it too), but the myriad ideas for character builds are what really attract me, multiclass more than others, so not an issue.
Edit: Seems I do have FvS. Don't know when that happened, since I just transferred this fellow from another server. I guess the FvS unlocked there applies to this one too.

So I made some small changes and ditched the Vistani as the 11 points seemed a huge loss for other options just for an action boost. Items and Haste pots should be fine I would think. I say 11 because to empower it, it meant a further 3 in Extra Action boosts.

Haste boost is the single most powerful action boost there is. It stacks with haste/alacrity. I strongly advice against dropping it.
Bears do get strikethrough in bear form (duh).
It's just that they get it from Nature Fighting feats, not THF feats. But you need THF feats in order to get strikethrough enhancements in Frenzied Berserker.
Supreme cleave is good at low levels, but later when you develop your strikethrough chance, you won't need it.
Lash Out - bleed stacks just don't do enough damage compared to your swings. You can experiment with it, but I recommend speccing out of it, and trying out vistani Haste Boost instead. Since you aren't sure of 6 AP in ravager anyway.
